I am selling my pride and joy. A 2001 VW Golf TDI with manual transmission. I purchased this car 3 years ago with about 70k miles on it and since have put on almost 60K. Currently has around 128K. I lived in Gainesville GA for most of that time and worked in Atlanta so I put a lot of miles on it during the week. I guess people use the term "highway miles" for this type of usage. It is garage kept and meticulously maintained. I have done quite a bit to this car over the last 3 years. I will attempt to cover some of it here, but honestly probably will forget some things.
Interior.
Trim - Anyone that is familiar with this model (MK4) knows the interior was not it's best feature. The trim had a sort of soft rubbery feel that I'm sure was nice driving off the lot. Unfortunately it peeled very easily. So I went through the car and pulled all of the trim out and cleaned off the old junk and sprayed a clear coat over it. It has a cleaner feel IMO.
Door Panels - Another infamous feature of this car is that the glue that holds the fabric to the door panels fails over time, and the fabric starts to hang off like an old bag. I removed the door panels and recovered them (or I should say a professional did). He used a faux suede which I feel dresses up the doors quite nicely. This was completed in the last 2 months.
Headliner - This is a common problem in a car that is a few years old but the headliner was sagging when I got it. The headliner was replaced about 2 months ago and looks new.
Tint - The tint was redone about 2 years ago. Darkest you can go legally. Professionally done and looks clean.
Radio - The model came with the Monsoon System, with changer in the back but I never even considered putting in a CD in it seeing that I don't own any. I upgraded the head unit to a Pioneer with handsfree bluetooth. Mic is wired in a good spot and have been very happy with quality in making calls while driving. Unit also has USB port which I use frequently for podcasts and Pandora. This unit is about 2 years old.
Misc Things - New shifter boot, new armrest in the front in the last 6 months. Also still has rear cargo cover ($300 part and missing on many of these model vehicles). Moon roof works perfectly. Spare and jack still in vehicle. Also I do not smoke and have never let anyone smoke in my car. It has no odors at all.
Exterior
Body - Car had very few dings when I purchased it, but I just had them removed last month and had the vehicle painted last month. Overall the car looks very very good (as you will see in the pictures or if you come see the car). But it does have some imperfections. They are impossible to capture in pictures but I wanted to make everyone aware of them. It is also debadged and new front insert gives the car a smoother look. Car has never been in an accident.
Lights - Front headlight and rear tail lights were upgraded about a year ago. Front lights have halos, and as you may know the driving lights always come on when the car is moving. Rear lights are LED with a light smoke.
Wheels/Tires - I have gotten mixed reviews on the wheels, but I can reassure you that this is not just a spray paint job. Rims were removed, sanded down, primed and then sprayed. Tires are Michelin Pilots and probably have about half their life left (20-30k would be my guess).
Misc - Horn is upgraded to a louder one. Comes with VW OE roof rack, Shule fairing, and bike mount. This was all purchased new about a year ago. Combined cost almost $400 and only used about a month. Pictures show the rack off of the car because shop told me to wait about 4 weeks after the paint job to put it back on. Windshield is also about 2 years old. This makes a huge difference in how it feels to drive the car.
Engine and Transmission
Transmission - 5spd. Very responsive and shifts perfectly.
Engine - 1.9 Diesel. This engine has been awesome since the day I got the car. It lacked a little bit of power when I purchased it. I cleaned out the intake and performance increased by 10X. I also replaced the Timing Belt and pulleys at this time (around 80K). It is recommended that you do this at 80k anyway. I recommend that anyone interested in this model TDI do your research on forums and online to make sure you treat this car properly. This car constantly gets me over 40MPG and still can get up and go when it needs to. Lots of fun to drive. Treat it well and it will most surely do the same to you.
AC - Was not working when I bought the car. All new AC parts about 3 years ago. Should last you for many many years to come. Ice cold AC.
Misc - Had a slight leak and discovered it was the valve cover. I replaced the valve cover and gasket. Battery is also about a year old.
That should cover almost everything on the car. It really is a great car in almost every way. I need a minivan though for the family so that is why I am selling it.
Shipping: Buyer will handle pickup or shipping of vehicle. Car will only be released once all funds have cleared. I am available to pickup an out of town buyer at the Atlanta airport if needed.

Volkswagen planning Up! hybrid model using XL1 powertrain
Sun, 24 Feb 2013Even though we've finally gotten a look at the production version of the 261-mile per gallon Volkswagen XL1, this aero-shaped two-seater was never intended for high-volume sales. Fortunately, it sounds like the same isn't true for the car's diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, which, according to a report from AutoCar, could make its way under the hood of another Volkswagen model: the Up! minicar (shown above).
A potential Up! Hybrid would likely be able to return some of the same impressive fuel economy numbers as the XL1, but it would be a more realistic car with more passenger space and greater production capacity. The hand-built XL1 will use a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder TDI engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the 27-hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery helps deliver an all-electric driving range of 31 miles.
One of the core pillars of the XL1's design is its lightweight construction with a 1752-pound curb weight, which makes the Up! a perfect recipient for using this powertrain since it weighs just 300 pounds more. The report says that the Up! Hybrid is still in the developmental phase, so a production version isn't expected for at least another 18 months.
Which will Dieselgate hurt more, Volkswagen or US diesels?
Tue, Sep 22 2015The most damning response to the news Volkswagen skirted emissions regulations for its diesel models may have actually come from the Los Angeles Times. On Saturday, the Times published an editorial titled "Did Volkswagen cheat?" The answer was undoubtedly yes. When you can't drive down Santa Monica Boulevard without seeing an average of one VW TDI per block, the following words are pretty striking: "... Americans should be outraged at the company's cynical and deliberate efforts to violate one of this country's most important environmental laws." VW has successfully cultivated a strong, environmentally conscious reputation for its TDI Clean Diesel technology, especially in states where emissions are strictly controlled. A statement like that is like blood all over the opinion section of the Sunday paper. The effect on VW's business, even Germany's financial health, was already felt Monday when the company's shares plummeted 23 percent in morning trading. The statement on Sunday from VW CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn says "trust" three times. That probably wasn't enough in nine sentences. Writers over the weekend have compared VW's crisis to one at General Motors 30 years ago, when it was the largest seller of diesel-powered passenger cars until warranty claims over an inadequate design and ill-informed technicians effectively pulled the plug on the technology at GM. In a sense, VW is in the same boat as GM because it has fired a huge blow into its own reputation and that of diesels in passenger cars. And just as automakers like Jaguar Land Rover, BMW and, ironically, GM, were getting comfortable with it again in the US. VW of America was already knee-deep in its other problems this year. Its core Jetta and Passat models are aging and it needs to wait more than a year for competitive SUVs that American buyers want. The TDIs were the only continuous bright spot in the line and on the sales charts. Even as fuel prices fell and buyers shunned hybrids, VW managed to succeed with diesels and show that Americans actually care about and accept the technology again. Fervent TDI supporters might actually lobby for that maximum $18 billion fine to VW. I've personally convinced a number of people to look at a TDI instead of a hybrid. Perhaps not so much for stop-and-go traffic, but I know buyers who liked the idea that a TDI drove like a normal car and wasn't packed with batteries.
VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes
Sun, 06 Jan 2013The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.
