This van being a automatic transmission Westfalia Joker, make it extremely rare. This is a one family owned Vanagon. This van was purchased new in Europe under the European delivery program then shipped to Washington state were it stayed from 1984 to 2015. This is a dry completely rust free west coast bus. 28k miles on the rebuilt stock motor by Bow Wow Motors in Lynwood Washington. This van has been meticulously maintained by the original elderly owner (have records). This van was well loved, maintained and always garaged. South African grill and H-4 headlight upgrade just installed. This van has 100% original paint and is in near mint condition. The interior still looks new. Rare factory trailer hitch and trailer light hook up by Westfalia (see picture). The van runs and drives excellent. Motor and Transmission- 28k miles on the rebuilt stock motor by Bow Wow Motors. The water cooled 1.9 liter runs perfectly. The transmission was rebuilt at some point. New fuel lines and filter, alternator, starter. The van has been meticulously maintained since new. Motor runs great, the transmission shifts crisp and precise. The steering is tight, brakes are good. Interior- The interior is in mint condition. The seats are comfortable and have no rips, stains or damage. The headliner is excellent. The dash has no crack. The carpet still looks new. The fridge runs off propane, 12 volt aux battery, and 120 (shore power). All curtains are in excellent condition and have no sun fading or damage. The interior cabinets are in like new condition. The front seats both swivel. The sink still has its original Blanko decal (the appliances appear to be hardly, if ever used). The interior just had a professional detail. The van has dual heaters (one mounted under rear seat as well as in the front with separate fan controls). Paint and Body- 101% original paint. This van has never had any paint work. I had the original paint professionally polished to a factory new shine. Rare paint color (paint color code is B9B9 Ivory Beige (L567). (The color is a light shade of yellow, not really a beige color). I believe this color is very rare and only came on European Joker models. The paint and body are in excellent condition. The paint is original and looks new say for a couple of minor dings and small scratches. The bumpers are in excellent condition. All door and body seals are in good condition, no leaks. Very dry van with no rust, seam rust, or cancer. This van was garaged from 1983 to 2016. Pop Top- The pop top canvas does show signs of age, but is perfectly usable as is. The upper bunk sleeps 2 and the pad is in excellent condition. The fiber glass top is in excellent original condition as well. The pop top headliner is new. Other- Rare factory installed Westfalia trailer hitch with trailer hook up. This van is set up to tow a small trailer. South African grill with H-4 headlights. Brand new main battery. 185 r14 heavy duty 6 ply tires. Rebuilt axles, c.v. joints, and new cv boots. New brakes, windshield and windshield seal. 2015 Volkswagen Touareg [w/video]

Fri, Dec 5 2014

The second-generation Volkswagen Touareg has been in production since 2010, and is therefore staring down the last part of its model cycle. To keep buyers interested, the company has undertaken a refresh of its upscale midsize SUV. As is typical of these things, the changes include some exterior and interior rejuvenation, as well as increased content levels and a slight uptick in price. The basics of the styling changes are pretty straightforward. The 2015 Touareg can be pretty easily spotted versus the outgoing model by way of its four-bar chrome grille, a cleaner headlight design, bigger VW badge and a completely new lower front clip. (I got one photo of the old and new models side-by-side for my Twitter followers before we rolled out on the drive.) There's also a thin strip of chrome that runs around the bodywork, standard LED taillights and a selection of three new wheel styles and five new paint colors. Inside, I found it harder to spot the changes, old to new. The Touareg's switchgear has been updated and there's a new frame for the infotainment display, but there's no piece that stands out and says "new model year!" Powertrains and mechanical bits all carryover from the 2014 Touareg, too. But there were a few functional changes to the vehicle, primarily in the new Driver's Assistance Package, for me to take note of as I took a lap of my favorite Ann Arbor, MI driving route. Drive Notes Let me start with the newest news then, the Driver Assistance pack. Volkswagen will sell you this suite of safety gear on either the mid-level Lux or the top-end Executive trims, for $2,500. The package included adaptive cruse cruise control, "Front Assist" for emergency braking situations, lane-keep assist and blind spot monitoring. If the contents of that package don't strike you as revolutionary, you're not alone. Some or all of the technologies that are new to the Touareg have been around other showrooms – and other VW family products – for quite a while. Still, they're nice to have as options. All of the driver assistance features that I was able to test worked as advertised, too. The adaptive cruise uses cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, so it isn't likely to be impacted by inclement weather, which is nice. I also appreciate that the lane-keep assist (which offers the driver a haptic buzz to the steering wheel when straying out of the lane) can be turned off, or turned down in terms of intensity and reaction time.

Five reasons to love, or hate, the culture of German cars

Thu, Mar 5 2015

A few months back, we took a 500-foot view of the culture of American cars, dissecting prides and prejudices on our way to the conclusion that automotive allegiances can be simultaneously embraced and derided. We had so much fun with the narrative that we decided to do it again, this time taking a look at Germany and its world-renowned lineup of automakers, including the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen, among others. Join us below as we discuss the points and counterpoints that make or have made the German auto industry what it is today. And remember, Germany did pretty much invent the automobile, after all... The V12 Engine If America is known for the proliferation of the V8 engine, an argument could be made that Germany owns the V12. Yes, of course, other companies have created V12 engines – Ferrari, Jaguar and Lamborghini immediately come to mind – but the big 12-cylinder powerplants from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, in particular, have proven to be some of the most effortless, luxurious and downright over-built engines the world has ever seen. These days, having 12 cylinders is more a case of wretched excess than ever before, and yet, you can still stroll into your local BMW or Mercedes dealership and get a brand-new 760i, S600 or even an over-the-top G65 AMG, efficiency be damned. Best of all, since the majority of these German powerhouses depreciate as fast as an anchor sinks, nearly any auto enthusiast who dreams of a dozen cylinders can satisfy their carnal desires. Current Star: 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 View 28 Photos Diesel Engines Remember how we talked about those glorious V12 engines? Well, you can even get one from Audi that runs on diesel. If your compression-ignition fantasies err more on the side of fuel savings, that's no problem, either. Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen have got you covered, with engines starting as small as 800 cubic centimeters (Smart Fortwo). If you want something a little more practical, it's hard to argue with a VW Golf TDI, which will provide plenty of space for you and three of your best friends, plus a fair bit of luggage, all while returning 50-ish miles per gallon. For the purposes of this discussion, we'd rather focus on the asinine levels of torque provided by Germany's high-end diesel engines than the lower-end fuel sippers.

VW recalls 220,000 Atlases, Atlas Cross Sports for airbag defect [Updated]

Thu, Mar 31 2022

[Update: Audi of America has confirmed that no U.S. models are among the recall population for plug-in hybrid fire issue.] Volkswagen has issued yet another recall for its Atlas SUV, this time for side airbags that may not deploy correctly in an accident due to a problematic connection in one of the vehicle's wiring harnesses. The campaign covers 222,892 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models built for the 2019-2023 model years.  The issue stems from a connection with the wiring harness that runs from the A-pillar into the door. VW says that harnesses produced by one of its suppliers were not built with additional measures to prevent movement at the connection point. Small movements can cause abrasion of the metal contacts which could lead to a whole host of electronic misadventures, including the potential for airbag deployment to be delayed in a crash.  "Micro-movement of the wire harness (terminal A-Pillar to front door) can result in damage to the wire terminal surface. Damage to the surface can [result] in fretting corrosion which may cause sporadic interruption in the electrical connection to the components of the front door," VW said in its defect notice. "The airbag warning light may illuminate if a malfunction is detected. Other symptoms of a sporadic interruption of the affected electrical connection can be: inadvertent rolling down windows, inadvertent park brake engagement at low speeds (below approx. 3km/h or 1.8mph), warning regarding faulty door sensor," VW said.  Not every model built within the range defined above is subject to the recall; terminals from other suppliers were manufactured with the necessary safeguards in place. If you own a 2019-2023 Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport, keep your eyes peeled for a notification from VW regarding the campaign, likely some time in early-mid May.  PHEV problems Across the Atlantic, the VW Group mothership confirmed that it will recall more than 100,000 plug-in hybrid models worldwide to address a fire risk. The recall was launched in response to 16 reported incidents of fires stemming from insufficient insulation of the PHEV battery pack that allows the engine cover to make contact if it is not completely secure. If that happens, the heat from the battery can ignite the engine cover. The recall will cover PHEVs build by VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda, Reuters reports, including the VW Passat, Golf, Tiguan and Arteon — plug-in variants of which are not sold in the United States.
