For sale is our VERY CLEAN 1970 Volkswagen Westfalia Tin-top Campmobile (Serial number 2302120547).  The bus currently has 96,580 miles on its 1600cc engine that was rebuilt 14,000 miles ago, it runs great and the auto-choke works well during colder weather.  The ENTIRE brake system has been replaced last year with high quality German parts, except for the e-brake cable.  That means new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, all hard brake lines replaced, new flexible brake lines, all brake hardware, brake fluid reservoir and also new shoes.  The drums were in great shape and were re-used.  The valves were recently adjusted and new valve cover gaskets installed, along with new fuel lines and fuel filter (less than 500 miles ago).  The bus also has new driver and passenger door seals, new 3-point retractable seat belts, new rear lap belts and a set of new Koni rear shocks that have not been installed yet.  The bus rides fine, but I picked these shocks up a few years ago when they became available since they are pretty hard to find. 4 new Hankook tires were installed less that 200 miles ago.  The Interstate battery is less than one year old.  All the turn signals, interior and exterior lights, radio and horn work as they should.

The interior is in very good condition.  The bus has the Westfalia Campmobile package, including ice-box, sink and fold down bed which operates smoothly and is in great condition.  The original cot is in good shape and is included in the auction.  The electrical hook-up works well.  The birch headliner is in great shape.

A few minor issues include:  The gas gauge does not work anymore (speedometer/odometer are fine), the water bottle cap for the sink is broken and the windshield wiper fluid pump does not seem to prime (wipers work good, just no fluid).  There is little rust on the bus and it is shown in the pics.

Feel free to email if you have questions.  You are welcome to come by to take it for a test drive.  The bus is for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early.  I will only ship to lower 48 states and will not ship internationally.  $500 deposit required within 24 hours of winning auction.  HAPPY BIDDING!!

Auto execs surveyed say VW, BMW most likely to grow

Thu, 17 Jan 2013

A new survey of top global automotive executives indicates both Volkswagen and BMW are the most likely to grow their market share over the next five years.
Tax advisory firm KPMG LLP has released its 14th annual Global Automotive Executive Survey, which includes responses from over 200 executives. A total of 81 percent of respondents said they expect to see Volkswagen make gains, compared to 70 percent last year. BMW, meanwhile, saw 70 percent of those surveyed say they believe the company will increase its market share. That's a jump of 7 percentage points over last year. This is the first time in the history of the survey that BMW has claimed the second-place spot.
Meanwhile, Hyundai has seen its perceived market share potential slacken for the third year in a row. Around 61 percent of those surveyed predicted gains for Hyundai, down from 63 in 2012. Toyota also has a surprising year, but for just the opposite reason. While the manufacturer had slipped in ranking since 2011, it enjoyed the largest increase of any company in the 2013 survey, jumping to 68 percent from 44 percent last year.

Which will Dieselgate hurt more, Volkswagen or US diesels?

Tue, Sep 22 2015

The most damning response to the news Volkswagen skirted emissions regulations for its diesel models may have actually come from the Los Angeles Times. On Saturday, the Times published an editorial titled "Did Volkswagen cheat?" The answer was undoubtedly yes. When you can't drive down Santa Monica Boulevard without seeing an average of one VW TDI per block, the following words are pretty striking: "... Americans should be outraged at the company's cynical and deliberate efforts to violate one of this country's most important environmental laws." VW has successfully cultivated a strong, environmentally conscious reputation for its TDI Clean Diesel technology, especially in states where emissions are strictly controlled. A statement like that is like blood all over the opinion section of the Sunday paper. The effect on VW's business, even Germany's financial health, was already felt Monday when the company's shares plummeted 23 percent in morning trading. The statement on Sunday from VW CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn says "trust" three times. That probably wasn't enough in nine sentences. Writers over the weekend have compared VW's crisis to one at General Motors 30 years ago, when it was the largest seller of diesel-powered passenger cars until warranty claims over an inadequate design and ill-informed technicians effectively pulled the plug on the technology at GM. In a sense, VW is in the same boat as GM because it has fired a huge blow into its own reputation and that of diesels in passenger cars. And just as automakers like Jaguar Land Rover, BMW and, ironically, GM, were getting comfortable with it again in the US. VW of America was already knee-deep in its other problems this year. Its core Jetta and Passat models are aging and it needs to wait more than a year for competitive SUVs that American buyers want. The TDIs were the only continuous bright spot in the line and on the sales charts. Even as fuel prices fell and buyers shunned hybrids, VW managed to succeed with diesels and show that Americans actually care about and accept the technology again. Fervent TDI supporters might actually lobby for that maximum $18 billion fine to VW. I've personally convinced a number of people to look at a TDI instead of a hybrid. Perhaps not so much for stop-and-go traffic, but I know buyers who liked the idea that a TDI drove like a normal car and wasn't packed with batteries.

1000-hp Mk1 VW Golf is terrifyingly cool

Tue, 04 Jun 2013

There are plenty of things to love about the Mk1 Volkswgen Golf. The machine's horsepower isn't one of them. From the factory, the little hatch cranked a breathy 112 horsepower from the most robust form of its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Boba motoring, however, has taken that figure and multiplied it by a factor of nearly 10. If 1,000 horsepower sounds terrifying in a machine with a wheelbase of just 94.5 inches, it should. A massive Garrett GTX4202R turbo force-feeds the little mill through a tweaked 16-valve KR head. The crew calls the beast the 16Vampir, and we think that's fitting.
Of course, we'd wager you quit reading right about the time you set your eyes on that headline. Those of you who've stuck around this long can point yourselves below to see the maniacal creation in action. You won't be disappointed.
