Great 1972 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper / Bus on 2040-cars
Newbury, Massachusetts, United States
Great 1972 VW Westfalia Camper. Owned for 2+ years and have camped in MA, ME and NH with her. Mileage is listed as 22,xxx but it has certainly turned over. We have put almost 3000 miles on her in our 2+ years of ownership. Purchased from CA where it was restored. Only selling to raise cash for a real estate opportunity (dream cottage on PEI!). Only driven May-October (garaged November-April). NO RUST ANYWHERE! Battery tray, dog legs, rockers, windshield frame and pinch-welds are all rock solid.
After sitting all winter, we put in a new battery at the beginning of May and she started right up. Idles smoothly and has plenty of power. We haven't taken her camping yet this year (it's been too cold here in New England) but have put approximately 150 miles on her this May going to little league games, cruise nights and (occasionally) to/from work. '72 is the first year for the Type IV motor (1.7L in this first iteration) and the last year for the low signal lights and classic rounded bumpers. Motor is strong with great compression (measured last August at between 118-121 in all cylinders). Factory correct dual Solex carbs. During our ownership, we've adjusted the valves and carbs (including new needles/seats), and replaced brake pads ('12), fuel lines ('13) and battery ('14). Ride is good with some play in the steering. 4 Speed transmission shifts smoothly through all gears with no grinding. Clutch is strong. Front disk/rear drums work great and provide plenty of stopping power. E-brake works great as well. All glass is good except for the passenger's side mirror which has a crack. Interior was re-done in CA by previous owner and is in great shape with no rips, no tears and no loose stitching. Rear seat folds easily to bed and back again. Pop top is in great shape with 3 zipper screens, working latches and no rips/holes/tears. Upper cot has no rips/holes/tears. Interior cabinets are in good shape and sink pump is fully functional. Paint was also done in CA by previous owner and is good (not great) with several small chips/scratches (what can I say? We actually camp in her!). It is not a show car ... but EVERYONE that sees it thinks it is. Everything (headlights, tail-lights, brake lights, directionals, windshield wipers, horn) works except for the reverse lights and license plate light (they did work ... think it is a fuse. Hasn't been a priority but I will try to fix before it is sold) and the windshield washer jets (we've never taken her out in bad weather so we have no use for this anyway but feel it should be mentioned). Also, the heat is not hooked up. I removed the blower/hoses to make it easier to access the engine bay but I have these parts and will include them in the sale. I see this written so often when someone lists a classic car: "don't buy if you don't like attention because everyone will want to stop and talk ... blah, blah blah". But in this case, it is absolutely true! 30min trips into town for ice cream routinely take over an hour because it seems like everybody who sees her either had one in college, had a friend or crazy uncle that had one and/or just wants to sit and talk about her. She really does make people smile. As with any old (40+ years) vehicle, you can expect to do some tinkering to make sure everything is in top shape. She is sold as-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. That said, she is a great, honest Westy that has provided our family with hours of enjoyment and untold memories. I will not give her away but the reserve is reasonable. I have the title, free and clear, in my name. Shipping arrangements/cost is the responsibility of the buyer but I will help facilitate shipping as needed. Also, we can provide covered, garage storage, at our residence, for up to 30 days after payment is received. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call: 978.289.8212. Thanks for checking out our auction ... best, Bill |

Volkswagen lays off 500 Chattanooga workers
Fri, 19 Apr 2013The redesigned Volkswagen Passat has been a decent seller since its debut in 2011, but sales have apparently dropped off enough that the automaker is trimming some of the employees from its Chattanooga, TN assembly plant. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will be cutting shifts and laying off 500 contracted workers in response to slowing sales.
Currently, the plant has three teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, but starting May 13, this will be reduced down to two teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. This will be done to reduce dealer inventory (the article says that VW dealers, on average, have a 97-day supply of Passats) and production capacity (currently running at an annual pace of 170,000 units, which is more than the 150,000 annual units the plant was planned to produce).
This, of course, isn't saying that the Passat has been a failure since VW added 200 full-time employees to the plant in February 2012 to keep up with increased demand. The AN article says that automakers frequently overstaff plants during the launch of a new product - or in this case, a new product and a new plant - but eventually reduce the workers as things run smoother and more efficiently.
Auction for first US VW e-Golf raises $41,400 for Global Green charity
Thu, Nov 6 2014Would having Jay Leno on hand have changed the outcome? That's what executives at Volkswagen might be asking after the German automaker auctioned off the company's first electric car in the US for around $6,000 over MSRP. VW auctioned off the first Volkswagen e-Golf in the US to raise money for the environmental non-profit Global Green USA. Bruce Oberg, an EV enthusiast and previous VW owner, proudly cut a $41,400 check for the car, which has a 116 miles per gallon-equivalent rating and is said to be able to go about 80 miles on a single charge. At your local dealer (depending on where you live), the e-Golf starts at $35,445. Sales start later this month in 11 states: California, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Oregon, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Washington, DC. The $6,000 premium for first-dib rights for the e-Golf is nice, but it doesn't compare to what BMW worked out this summer. In August, the first i8 plug-in hybrid in the US was auctioned off at California's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance for $825,000 (to an unidentified buyer). That's about six times the car's sticker price, but this special edition came with Louis Vuitton luggage and was presented by noted car buff Leno. VW's press release below. VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF RAISES MONEY TO BENEFIT GLOBAL GREEN USA AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CHARITY AUCTION Nov 4, 2014 Winning bidder claims first VW electric vehicle as the car begins to ship to select U.S. dealerships Herndon, VA (November 4, 2014) – Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced that the auction of the first 2015 all-electric Volkswagen e-Golf has raised $41,400, with proceeds benefitting the national environmental non-profit Global Green USA and its efforts to advance smart solutions to climate change. The winner of the auction, which ran from October 8–29 on CharityBuzz.com, became the first U.S. driver to own Volkswagen's all-new, fully-electric vehicle. "Volkswagen's commitment to e-mobility and sustainability runs deep. We could not be more proud that the e-Golf has helped raise money to benefit the efforts of Global Green USA, an organization that shares in our dedication to the environment," said Michael Horn, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
VW outsells GM in China for first time in 8 years
Fri, 26 Oct 2012In case you didn't know, Volkswagen is hell-bent on becoming the largest automaker in the world. The German carmaker has inched closer to that goal, having outsold General Motors in China last quarter for the first time in eight years.
Volkswagen's sales in China, its largest marker, increased by 21 percent last quarter to 704,991 units. Those numbers almost tripled GM's third-quarter growth, and were enough to beat out the American automaker's 664,765 sales. GM, however, still leads in year-to-date sales in China by a slim margin of around 77,000 units. The Asian nation also happens to be GM's largest market, and according to the report in Automotive News, China's car market may grow to be larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined in three years' time.
About the news his company was bested in China by VW last quarter, GM CEO Dan Akerson is quoted saying, "It's not whether you're the biggest car manufacturer. It's whether you want to be the most profitable." It should be noted of these figures that GM includes truck figures, yet excludes Hong Kong and Macau from its Chinese sales numbers, while VW does just the opposite. Through September of this year, Volkswagen had 5 of the 10 best selling vehicles in China. GM boasted three of the cars on that list.
