1989 Volkswagen Vanagon Gl Automatic Transmission on 2040-cars
Chicago, Illinois, United States
For sale: 1989 VW Vanagon with automatic transmission and 152K miles. Bought with the intent of traveling the country after a 2011 layoff, but took on more work too soon to make the trip a reality and recently inherited another daily driver. The bus drives and handles well, and seats 7 adults (or four when the rear seat is folded down into a full-sized bed). Panoramic windows offer 360° views of the outside world. A great vehicle for hauling kids, band equipment, camping and every other purpose. It is not fast, but it gets 20 MPG, which is unusual for a van. Unique, roomy and kind of futuristic-looking!
The van currently has no known major mechanical problems; there are a couple of small fluid leaks typical of a VW of its age. The brakes and suspension are strong, and I have installed a new battery, tires and gas tank in last 2,000 miles worth approximately $1,600. The body is solid, with some fading on the sides due to the removal of a previous owner's painted-on sign, and rust starting below the rear windows and wheel wells. There are no holes anywhere and the underbody is solid; it does have a small ding on the rear driver's side wheel well and a crack in the left rear bumper housing. It is currently garage-kept. the seating upholstery is a bit faded but clean and free of any rips and tears. There are no cracks or tears in the headliner and dash. |

VW worker killed in robot accident
Wed, Jul 1 2015A 21-year-old worker died from injuries after being struck by the robot that he was installing at Volkswagen's factory in Kassel, Germany. According to The Financial Times, the man was inside the safety cage surrounding the machine when he was hit in the chest and pressed against a metal plate. Emergency crews took him to a local hospital, where he died. That man's name hasn't been released, but he was reportedly a third-party contractor, rather than a direct employee of VW. A second person was also installing the robot when the accident happened. This individual was farther away and wasn't harmed, according to The Financial Times. The local newspaper reported that the incident took place in a part of the plant used for producing electric motors. The local prosecutor has opened an investigation into whether there was any negligence involved. According to Volkswagen, the Kassel factory is one of its main hubs of transmission production and employs around 15,500 people. The motors and batteries for the e-Up and e-Golf are also made there. In 2008, VW built its one-millionth DSG gearbox at the plant. Related Video:
Volkswagen incorporating gesture control into updated Golf
Tue, May 26 2015For many, the Volkswagen Golf is the epitome of the accessible mode of transportation. It is the "People's Car," after all. Yet in its next iteration, it's slated to get some trick high-end tech on board. Speaking with Auto Express, VW powertrain chief Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser revealed that the upcoming facelifted Golf will include gesture control technology. "The interior features a preview of future VW interior technologies, with smartphone applications redefined for automotive use," Neusser told AE. "The gesture control will become reality in the Golf at the end of next year." The feature is being rolled out by other automakers on decidedly more upscale offerings (like the next-gen BMW 7 Series), but look poised to democratize the technology on the far more accessible Golf as soon as next year when the updated model arrives. VW demonstrated the tech at CES with the Golf R Touch concept, which is making an encore appearance at CES Asia in Shanghai this week, where Neusser confirmed the features are slated for production. The VW Golf R Touch concept incorporated a trio of oversized infotainment displays measuring 12.8, 12.3 and 8 inches, as well as gesture-control technology and all the latest smartphone connectivity standards – including Microsoft MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto.
