1986 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper

You are looking at a 1986 VW Westfalia Camper. This is essentially the final version of the Westfalia Vanagons the way they were built until 1991. It has the stronger 2.1 liter water cooled engine, the newer ducts and the cooling system like all the later models ('86 and up) have. It is in nice condition and we have had it serviced at a local VW shop. Amongst other things, the following was done: Engine compression test check (Checked out very well), Replaced overflow and extra coolant tank, Flushed old sulphate free coolant and replaced it with new sulphate free coolant (important if you do not want your engine walls to corrode), Replaced ingnition and had the central locking system repaired. It is a very clean camper since it is a California car. It has original paint and it has virtually no rust with two exceptions, which are as classic for these Vans as the vans themselves: One quarter size rust spot under the front windshield and one also about quarter size rust spot on the bottom right hand side of the rear window. The rear window rust has a little hole. There are a couple of dents in the driver side door but nothing major. Everything works as it should and the AC blows ice cold since the previous owner had replaced all the ducts and the AC unit. The refrigerator works fine on both settings: electric and gas. The kitchen is very clean and everything works great including sink and stove. All the trim for the pop up top has been replaced which means no cracked rubber seals and no leaks. The pop up camper works like new and the Van still has the original "single window" fabric with no holes or tears. In case you are wondering: The Westfalia sleeps four people: Two on the lower level bed and two on the upper (pop up). The exhaust system is a stainless steel version and is also in great shape. The Vanagon just recently passed CA smog without issues. The engine is strong and the tires have a lot of tread left. This Vanagon comes with all original locks and also still has the original locked gas cap with one VW key opening every lock. The tires were upgraded to the 16" "Go Westy" wheels and the wheels have been custom chromed. All windows with exception to the front windshield have been tinted professionally. No bubbles or nasty wrinkles. If you didn't know they are tinted, you wouldn't notice. The car comes with the original curtains and additional curtains to cover the front windshield and the driver and passenger windows for privacy. We took the car for a 1000 mile road trip recently and everything is fine. The engine in this Vanagon is the second one and it has roughly 100k miles on it. It is an original non rebuilt engine which was taken from a donor Van. This should be good for at least another 150k miles before it needs a rebuild. The transmission shifts nicely but (for full disclosure) it does have a slight hesitation shifting into third. I think this is all that I could say about the car. This wil be a reliable and solid camper for years to come and when it eventually will need some attention, it will be worth it, since these are quite collectible vehicles at this point. One last thing: The '86 year model is the last year where they still used the more beautiful chrome bumpers instead of the plastic ones. These look beautiful and are in very nice shape. Please understand that this is a 27 year old car and while I have described everything I know about this car, I am not offering any kind of warranty or guarantees. The Van is sold as is.

How should Volkswagen deal with its diesel problems?

    Mon, Sep 21 2015

The hounds of hell are bearing down on Volkswagen in the wake of allegations of cheating on diesel emissions testing. In just a single day, Volkswagen's stock has dropped 23 percent and the German government has announced that it is going to investigate a far larger number of vehicles over emissions violations. The American storm is quickly becoming a global one. Volkswagen sells over a million diesel vehicles a year and also has more than 13 percent of the automotive market overall – it was the number one automaker in the world up until the scandal. Yet in a matter of hours, Volkswagen has also become a pariah with potential fines and recalls that may be dwarfed by how the alleged lies and deceit change how governments and consumers view the company. Consumers are really going to be the key to the company's survival. It's those consumers who are really going to be the key to the company's survival. Every single one of them now finds themselves with a product that was sold illegally and may not be registered until recall work is done. What's worse is that Volkswagen doesn't yet have a solution for the emissions issue to offer these customers. It should also be noted that this is not the first time Volkswagen has found itself in violation of EPA emission regulations. Volkswagen is in a world of trouble, so what now? As a car dealer and former financial analyst who took several companies public, I believe Volkswagen can and should consider three points of action that would make an enduring difference in the times to come. 1. Offer affected TDI owners a compelling reason to stay with the brand. Recall work and a cup of coffee at the dealership are not going to be enough to placate current owners. Volkswagen should provide compensation for customers at the earliest opportunity and offer some type of inducement that keeps them within the fold. This shouldn't be the industry's version of a Chuck E. Cheese coupon - a small discount on a new vehicle. Volkswagen needs to offer something along the lines of a strong warranty extension of the entire powertrain (not just the emissions system) or some type of valuable feature upgrade for these vehicles so that owners feel that they have been treated fairly. Perhaps a combination of a brand new navigation system, software upgrades for the infotainment components, or some type of basic free WiFi service would be a healthy act of generosity.

Volkswagen looking to acquire Proton, Lotus?

    Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Let's say you're an automaker bent on world domination looking to grow your sales. That's going to have you looking at Asian markets, because that's where some of the biggest growth has been, and that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing as it considers making another run at Malaysia's Proton.
Reuters reports that Volkswagen is interested in at least a partial stake, if not a controlling interest in Lotus-parent Proton as a way to continue a production presence in the region without having to build its own factory.
Volkswagen already builds the Passat in a DRB-HICOM facility in Pekan, Malaysia, and plans are in place to build the Jetta and Polo there, as well. With both southeast Asia and its relationship with Proton figuring so importantly in Volkswagen's plans for expansion, buying into Proton can help ensure stability. Volkswagen is being tight-lipped about the whole idea, but CEO Martin Winterkorn did recently say, "it's our clear goal to continue the successful (expansion) course of past years with great dynamics and stability," which sounds an awful lot like deals are on the table to smooth the path to further growth.

Skoda racing Up! to Worthersee with Citigo Rally concept

    Thu, 17 May 2012

If you thought the Volkswagen Group was about to wind down the endless stream of concept cars based on the new Up! city car, think again. Because not only is the Volkswagen brand itself keeping the train a-moving, so are its sister brands.
Skoda has its own version of the Up called the Citigo. But what racing fans know the Czech subsidiary for best is its rally program that has become a dominant force in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the basis for VW's own foray into the World Rally Championship. Now Skoda is bringing the two together with an exciting concept car previewed by the rendering above and confirmed in the press release below.
Following in the footsteps of the tantalizing Fabia roadster unveiled last year, the Citigo Rally concept is to be the centerpiece of the Skoda display at the Volkswagen Group's annual hot-hatch gathering at Lake Wörthersee in Austria. Details are scarce, but the show car will feature rally-inspired bodywork complete with 18-inch white alloys packed into aggressively flared wheel arches, a substantial rear wing and vents aplenty.
