1985 Volkswagen Vanagon Gl, 1.9l, 4-speed, 165k on 2040-cars
Brooklyn, New York, United States
1985 Volkswagen Vanagon GL, 1.9L, 165K 5-spd My Dad and I bought it with the intent of making it into a project car and occasional camper, but have decided to focus on another project and must free up space in the garage. Until 2011 the van was in Virginia, garaged in NY after that, which probably explains the clean wheel wells and frame rails. The van starts and runs, but begins smoking out of the exhaust once warmed up. The good: - The engine, and all the accessories are dry - no leaks on the ground - Transmission shifts through the gears well - Oil is clean - no signs of head gasket failure - Matching Cooper/Douglas tires in the front/rear, respectively, about 50%, good condition - VR-3 AM/FM/CD/USB/Aux in-dash unit with after-market speakers - Turn-signals/headlights/marker lights/brake lights all work - All dash lights work on ignition, no warning lights on when engine is running - Interior lights operational - Wipers/washer operational - HVAC cannot be tested - missing knobs - Interior could use good vacuuming and a shampoo, but is in pretty good shape otherwise - For the year, exceptionally rust-free and clean wheel-wells, underside, and frame rails - Official Factory Repair Manual included w/ sale The bad: - Rear hatch struts need to be replaced - A dent in the rear bumper - Surface rust on the inside of the rear hatch - Some dents on the body (see pics for more details), some are covered up in spray-paint (not an exact paint match) - Bumpers are missing end-caps: front left/right, rear right More pictures are available upon request. |

US-spec 2015 Volkswagen Golf and GTI to finally debut in New York
Tue, 12 Mar 2013The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf is hardly new to us. In fact, we've already driven it. And elsewhere in the world, the new Golf is already winning awards. Even so, we still have yet to see the US-spec version of the car, though that won't be the case much longer. As part of the New York Auto Show festivities later this month, Volkswagen will finally show off the 2015 Golf models destined for our shores.
Three different versions of the Golf will debut under the lights of New York City's Javits Center: the turbocharged TSI, oil-sipping TDI and hotter GTI. The first model in that list uses Volkswagen's new 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, replacing the outgoing 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline five-cylinder. The latter two models use familiar engines: the 2.0-liter TDI diesel and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, respectively.
Even though the new Golf officially debuts later this month, it won't go on sale in the US until the first quarter of 2014. We'll be waiting patiently.
Brazil contemplates safety exemption for VW Kombi as it goes out of production today [w/poll]
Tue, 31 Dec 2013Brazil: the country of carnivals, indescribable beauty adjacent to abject poverty, Ayrton Senna and old Volkswagen models. Only they're not old - they're new, they're just based on old designs. The original Beetle continued production there long after it had been phased out elsewhere, but the original Kombi van has lasted much longer. That ends today, however, with the iconic VW Microbus ambling out of production on the last day of 2013.
VW kept making the van in Brazil with the original air-cooled 1.2-liter boxer four until 2005, after which the original design was updated with a 1.4-liter water-cooled engine. Today, however, it ultimately falls prey to safety regulations that mandate that all vehicles - no matter how old their design - need to have airbags and ABS, forcing Volkswagen do Brasil to cease production of the Microbus after a 56-year production run. But the latest word is that the Kombi (as it's presently known) could get a stay of execution - or at least a resurrection in short order.
According to reports, the Brazilian government is looking into granting the Type 2 Microbus an exemption from said safety regulations, reasoning that the van was designed long before the advent of airbags and ABS. If the measure goes through, the Kombi Last Edition (pictured above) could prove not to be the last at all. So what do you think, should the Microbus get an exemption from Brazilian safety regulations for nostalgia's sake? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.
Translogic 164: Driving the fuel cell vehicles of the 2014 LA Auto Show
Wed, Nov 26 2014The LA Auto Show is known for its environmentally friendly vehicle debuts. At last year's show, hydrogen fuel cell concepts from Honda and Toyota joined a lease-ready Hyundai Tucson FCEV to cast a green hue over the convention center. This year, automakers took us a step closer to a fuel cell future by offering drives of their hydrogen-electric hybrids. Translogic host Jonathon Buckley takes a ride in the Toyota Mirai, which is headed for production in 2016. He follows that with a spin in the Volkswagen Passat HyMotion and the Audi A7 Sportback h-tron quattro concept. Which of these fuel cell vehicles holds the most promise? Tune in to find out.
