Up for sale is a 1984 Vanagon Stretch Limo! This unique vehicle started life at two '84 Vanagon GLs that came together to create an incredible machine.

The goal was simple: create the ideal road trip machine. Every step of the process included strategic improvements to achieve that goal. When splicing the donor vehicles, two high strength steel beams were welded into the unibody frame channels creating a super-strong chassis with which to work.

It is currently set up to seat 7 but with the installation of the included extra seats it could happily seat 11! The rear sliding door opens as usual and the front once can be easily removed for loading cargo or camping.

Installed in the bus is the rare automatic transmission, but the auction also includes a manual gearbox to suit the buyer's preference.

After completing the drivetrain and triple testing all essential systems, some friends and I loaded up for a test drive.

The 1.9 engine provided more than enough power to get the van up to cruising speed, it handled beautifully, and stopped assertively.

While climbing a hill, we heard a loud "pop" and lost power. As it turns out the torquey little boxer engine had sheared the flexplate that connects the engine to the transmission. I took it as a sign to do a TDI swap and removed the engine to begin the process of searching for the ideal diesel powerplant. Unfortunately TDI engines that fit my modest budget are few and far between so the bus went into storage.

The bus has been sitting in a covered shed waiting for it's new heart; I pulled it out this week to photograph and make space.

With the flexplate replaced, engine reinstalled, and a new battery this Vanagon could be back on the road in no time; with those issues remedied it could be driven cross-country without issue.

Time passes and plans are made leading to an out of state move in the near future. I won't have space to store or work on this project so must pass the baton.

I have no idea how to appraise this vehicle so I will let the interested parties decide. I'm not setting a reserve and will not end the auction early.

The auction includes the bus, the removed 1.9 engine (~54,000 miles and in fantastic condition), manual transmission, and gobs of great Vanagon parts residing in the bus.

All the tires have great tread and are ready to roll.

There are still cosmetic things to worked out once the van is driveable, the splice seam could use a bit more bodywork, there is a dent in the front sliding door, and it wouldn't hurt for everything to be the same color with a couple of coats of paint.

I have a clear title in my name for the vehicle. It was registered and insured under the "front" van's VIN, so no issues there.

I'm happy to answer any and all questions and take more photographs upon request.

This is an as-is, where-is auction. I have described the vehicle accurately to the best of my ability and make no further guarantees.

The bus must be towed or trailered from its current location by July 1.

If the bus sells for less than $500, full payment is due via PayPal within 48 hours; otherwise a $500 deposit is required with the remaining balance to be paid in cash in person at pickup.

Happy Bidding!

Editors' Picks August 2021 | Honda Civic, Mercedes S-Class and more

Thu, Sep 9 2021

This month of Editors' Picks saw us award the honor to a couple of redesigned stalwarts like the Honda Civic and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Plus, a new crossover that splits the difference between the compact and subcompact class takes home the prize. On top of this, we'll introduce you to a new term: midcompact. We'll be using this to describe those in-between crossovers that are a tad too small to be considered compact, but too large to neatly fit into the subcompact class. For a few examples of these "midcompact" cars, we'll point you to the Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos and VW Seltos. In case you missed our previous Editors' Picks posts, here’s a quick refresher on whatÂ’s going on here. We rate all the new cars we drive with a 1-10 score. Cars that are exemplary in their respective segments get EditorsÂ’ Pick status. Those are the ones weÂ’d recommend to our friends, family and anybody whoÂ’s curious and asks the question. The list that youÂ’ll find below consists of every car we rated in August that earned an EditorsÂ’ Pick. 2021 Genesis G70 2022 Genesis G70 View 26 Photos Quick take: Genesis hits all the right buttons with its G70. It's attractive, fun to drive and can be had for a fair price. Enthusiasts should give it a shot before taking home one of its German competitors. Score: 8 What it competes with: Alfa Romeo Giulia, Lexus IS, Acura TLX, Infiniti Q50, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Cadillac CT4, Volvo S60 Pros: Sharp handler, stunning exterior looks, strong engines Cons: Average interior, loses manual option, small backseat and trunk From the editors: News Editor Joel Stocksdale — "I was already a big fan of the Genesis G70. It has brilliant handling, and the twin-turbo V6 is a beast. It's even a bargain against the competition. And Genesis just made it look a lot better. I wish they'd done a bit more to update the interior, but it's still not a bad cabin. Besides, you won't think too much about it when you're hustling down a fun back road." Features Editor James Riswick — "Yes, it is small, but in a sport sedan segment where "sport" means increasingly less, the G70 still delivers (in part because of that smallness).

VW pondering low-cost sub-brand for China?

Wed, 30 Jan 2013

More detail is being sketched into the Volkswagen Group's plan to launch a low-cost brand for emerging markets. Late last year a German report quoted a VW rep saying that the brand has been interested in building a no-frills car, the kind that would challenge Dacia and Datsun, for a while. With both Proton and Suzuki effectively out of the partnership picture, a report in Reuters suggests VW could go straight to China, developing a car with its joint venture partners and building and selling it there.
Officially, company CEO Martin Winterkorn said the issue of a model for emerging markets would be decided this year but VW isn't any closer to confirming any kind of plan for a car in its portfolio underneath the Up!, remarking to Reuters about the China possibility, "That's an issue we're currently looking at."

Volkswagen building budget car family planned for China in 2018

Mon, Jun 29 2015

Volkswagen has publicly pondered a low-cost car for China, something akin to Nissan's Datsun revival in Southeast Asia, for at least three years. In 2013 it tapped Chinese partner FAW to help develop an entire budget brand, with plans to have something on the market in 2016 in the 6,000- to 8,000-euro range. About a year ago, VW said it couldn't figure out how to engineer an inexpensive car that didn't run counter to the brand's values, then three weeks later said it had overcome the issues. Reuters now reports that VW CEO Martin Winterkorn told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, "We will bring a budget-car family to market in 2018, with an SUV, saloon and hatchback." Winterkorn didn't offer any other details like who VW would work with to build it - VW has partnerships with both FAW and SAIC, but the announcement will be welcomed by the brand's Chinese outpost. When this adventure started, VW said it was working to create a model that would cost 6,000 to 8,000 euro. That estimate has increased. Winterkorn is now saying the 2018 offerings will come in between 8,000 and 11,000 euro. In a straight euro-to-yuan conversion, that would equate to Chinese pricing of 56,000 to 77,000 yuan. For comparison, the New Polo with a 1.4-liter engine and a manual transmission starts at 85,900 yuan. Perhaps with an eye on the success of the Nissan-Renault sub-brand Dacia in Europe and emerging markets, Winterkorn told Bild, "We will see if this is something of interest for other markets as well." On the opposite end of the price/performance spectrum, Winterkorn also said that VW is working on two new models for Bugatti, one powered by a traditional gasoline engine and another with some sort of hybrid setup. The latter model would reportedly be the higher-performing of the two, though it's not clear whether there would be two vehicle lines or two versions of the same vehicle. As ever, as soon as we know more, so will you.
