Up for Reserve Auction is a 1977 VW Camper Bus. This van is in excellent shape and 95% rust free and 90% restored. Originally purchased 1.5 years ago from Wisconsin and garaged kept in California during the partial restoration phase. The paint and body look great with minor dings/dents/scratches from previous owner. A lot of time and money has already gone into restoring this fabulous bus. A full listing of items repaired or replaced is below. It runs and drives excellent. The engine was rebuilt 5-6 years ago by the previous owner. The engine runs great, the engine compartment is the one area still in need of some work. Both left and right battery trays need to be replaced due to rusting and entire inside of engine bay needs some cleaning/repainting plus the surrounding engine dust shield seal. Otherwise the engine is in perfect working condition. The pioneer radio is currently out and needs to be installed. The camper top canvas is still out but does not take much work to put one in. Rear bumper still needs to be fitted on, had trouble with a rear bolt and have not re-tackled this. Also, glove box needs a new liner. It does have the ice box but have not started it up. The stove & sink were removed, old venting holes patched but fixtures still remained on outside of bus. Old propane tank was also removed due to safety concerns. Poles and cot still available for set up over the front driver/passenger seats. Electrical cord included for outlet hook up on outside of bus at camper sites. Paint is new, with two tone baby blue on bottom with white up top. It is very clean in and out and will make any new owner proud. Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war

A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?

Are more diesel scandals about to erupt?

More automakers may soon be embroiled, like Volkswagen, in diesel emissions scandals. According to the Daily Kanban, either the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) or the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) will soon announce from 10 to 15 more cases of automakers cheating national diesel emissions rules. The outlet says three of the incidents are attributed to Opel. Studies conducted by the DUH, the University of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland, and the UK's Leeds University found that Opel's diesel Zafira, Corsa, and Vectra models emit more NOx than European regulations allow when tested in ways that go beyond the European testing protocol, such as when done on a four-wheel rolling road instead of a two-wheel rolling road. Opel said the accusations had no merit. Specifically on the Zafira, the DUH asked Opel about the emissions findings, and Opel said that no General Motors software contains any measures to enable cheating. Opel then tested a Zafira of its own "both on a two- and a four-wheel roller dynamometer," finding that "The emission behavior determined in each case does not differ from one another." That makes this a case of he-said-she-said for the moment. The Daily Kanban's sources say the cheating methods "range from the crude to the highly sophisticated," with those at the latter end complex enough to render Volkswagen's methods "pedestrian." As for any automakers who might be named, the matter of real-world emissions exceeding a legal limit doesn't mean a carmaker has designed systems that cheat, it might mean the company designed the car to pass a test.
