1974 Volkswagen Bus/transporter (type Ii). Major Upgrades; Looks And Runs Great on 2040-cars
Palos Verdes Peninsula, California, United States
Here's the story: This is a 1974 VW Bus (T2), configured as a 7 passenger commuter with Bay Window set up, given to my son for his 21st birthday. He and I have done a substantial upgrade/ restoration on it. He loves it, but needs a new vehicle due to extensive travel plans. The bus is in superb condition on the outside; in excellent operating shape (starts easily and runs smoothly even after a cold start) and is good but not completely finished inside. Remaining items are all quite minor; Antenna; Prop rod for engine compartment and tube for windshield washers need to be fixed; glove box (included in sale) to be installed; two window vent knobs and glove box handle needed; some running lights on outside should be purchased and installed. Clearly, nothing significant - this is already an outstanding looking and running bus.
More history and detail: The vehicle was in So Cal when we bought it and had apparently been in the state a substantial majority of its life (maybe all - not confirmed). Although it had some obvious cosmetic flaws and a handful of modest mechanical needs when we purchased it, it also had some HUGE strengths: a new, very strong 1.8L engine that had been installed only 10K miles before (the engine was checked by two mechanics who both felt the mileage claim was reasonable); a dead straight frame and NO floor or body rust other than the inevitable area around the front windshield and, of course a few surface rust spots. All major exterior issues have been addressed: We replaced the entire front nose panel to eliminate the rust around and below the windshield; installed new window and door rubber and had bumpers sanded and primed prior to professional application of new paint. Tires are brand new; electronic ignition was added and just last week we upgraded to a new Empi HPMX Dual carburetor (with linkage, air cleaners, throttle cable and plugs). This bus starts quickly, warms up immediately and runs smoothly - very reliable and remarkably easy to drive. Inside, we replaced the carpet, added cool curtains and front door liners (one has a small tear), installed new sound system and changed upholstery on both front and rear seats (middle seat is in good shape with no rips). Again, please note that the mileage figure given is an estimate, but we feel strongly that the actual mileage is quite close to our estimate. Bottom line: This is a rare opportunity to buy a superior bus at a reasonable cost AND HAVE TONS OF UPSIDE in value with minimal work. Next level of investment: Bring this fine bus to the Collector level, where it could be worth $20 - $25K or more. Final note: You arrange and pay for transportation (we live in the LA area), but we will work with you to make it happen. Hit me with any questions and please look carefully at all pictures. Thanks. |

Auto execs surveyed say VW, BMW most likely to grow
Thu, 17 Jan 2013A new survey of top global automotive executives indicates both Volkswagen and BMW are the most likely to grow their market share over the next five years.
Tax advisory firm KPMG LLP has released its 14th annual Global Automotive Executive Survey, which includes responses from over 200 executives. A total of 81 percent of respondents said they expect to see Volkswagen make gains, compared to 70 percent last year. BMW, meanwhile, saw 70 percent of those surveyed say they believe the company will increase its market share. That's a jump of 7 percentage points over last year. This is the first time in the history of the survey that BMW has claimed the second-place spot.
Meanwhile, Hyundai has seen its perceived market share potential slacken for the third year in a row. Around 61 percent of those surveyed predicted gains for Hyundai, down from 63 in 2012. Toyota also has a surprising year, but for just the opposite reason. While the manufacturer had slipped in ranking since 2011, it enjoyed the largest increase of any company in the 2013 survey, jumping to 68 percent from 44 percent last year.
Volkswagen Golf voted 2013 European Car of the Year
Tue, 05 Mar 2013The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf just went on sale in Europe, but it is already off to a promising start. Announced as the Geneva Motor Show kicked off, the newest Golf was named European Car of the Year for 2013 in dominating style over cars like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 twins, Volvo V40, Ford B-Max and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
According to Automotive News Europe, the MkVII Golf won handily over its rivals with a total of 414 votes. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 received 202 votes finishing in a distant second, while the Volvo V40 (189 votes), Ford B-Max (148 votes) and Mercedes-Benz A-Class (138 votes) round out the top five. The new Golf marks the third Volkswagen product to receive the prestigious award with previous cars including the MkIII Golf and the most recent iteration of the Polo.
Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war
Sun, 30 Dec 2012A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?
