You are looking at a 1973 VW Bus Westfalia Camper addition.  This is the tin top version that doesn't have a pop up top.  I have heard it referred to as the poor mans camper.  It does have the sink, icebox, the folding tables, the bench seat that folds out into a bed.  It also comes with the kiddie cot that goes above the drivers area.  This van has been somewhat of a daily driver for me.   It runs great with no complaints at all.  Really fun to drive.  It is a 4 speed manual and the clutch works fine, transmission shifts fine.  It does have the typical sloppy shifter but I've had no trouble with it at all.  The fuel gauge doesn't work.  I haven't gotten around to fixing that one.  Speedometer and odometer work fine.  I absolutely love this thing, but have to sell only to make room for a new addition.  We are also listing our 72 Beetle as well.  The garage is full and it has to go.  It has all new brakes, some new brake hoses, new battery, nice tread on the tires.  Carb was rebuilt recently as well.  I also just replaced the windshield and seal.  It had that typical haze around the edges and the seal was starting to rot.  The doors and windows all work great.  I also recently replaced the starter.

There is some rust here and there, but as you can see in the pictures, it isn't terminal.  The floorboards and underside are solid.  I have some repair panels that go with it too.  There is a panel to replace the spot at the pass side rear wheel and a new battery tray.  I have been driving this to work on a regular basis and it's been great.  The driver side seat belt shoulder strap is shot.  The rest of them work fine.

It has a 1600 VW upright motor in it.  Parts are easy to find and get to.  It runs perfect and very cool.  I had heard that running an upright in the back of a bus can lead to overheating.  This bus has been driven in the hottest summer months and even up the mountain with no trouble at all.  It actually runs cooler than the beetle I have. I assure you, no worries at all taking this van anywhere.

Feel free to call or email me with any questions or to request more pictures.

I have set this up with NO RESERVE.  A bit of a risk, but it needs to go.

Thanks for your consideration.

Volkswagen Cross Up! headed for production after Geneva reveal

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

The last time we saw the Volkswagen Cross Up!, it was sitting out in the snow in prototype form, but the next time we'll see this slightly more rugged version of the diminutive Up! hatchback will be when it makes its production debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Looking like a micro-crossover with its raised ground clearance and black cladding, the Cross Up! will be the fourth "Cross" model for VW (after the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran) when it goes on sale this summer in mainland Europe (UK sales remain up in the air and US sales are highly unlikely).
Overall, the styling of the production Cross Up! has stayed fairly true to the 2011 concept car, including the front and rear fascias that offer a more rugged look, stocky 16-inch wheels and roof rack side rails. Inside, this model will get unique interior enhancements such as "Cross Up!" sill plates and an instrument panel available in red, black or silver. Like the regular Up!, the Cross Up! is powered by a 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual transmission, and it doesn't look like all-wheel drive will be part of the picture. For more details on the upcoming Cross Up!, check out VW's press release posted below.

MotorWeek looks back at the 1986.5 VW Scirocco 16V

Wed, Jan 21 2015

It's back to the past with MotorWeek for a video dive into the 1986.5 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V, the coupe that carried the pennant for VW's performance aspirations for 15 years, from 1974 to 1989. This one, the last generation, got the hottest of all by adding a head with four valves per cylinder. The 1.8-liter DOHC engine cranked out "an amazing" 123 horsepower and 120 pound-feet of torque, and made this model the fastest VW to ever be sold in America; it went from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.5 seconds, faster than a Porsche 944. To compare vintage apples to modern ones, the New Scirocco with a 123-hp 1.4-liter TSI engine and a manual transmission takes 9.3 seconds. We like MotorWeek's Retro Review series not only for the cars, but for how they also remind us of what we used to find important in cars. The Scirocco here gets upvoted for its throttle response and handling, downvoted for an oddly placed oil pressure gauge and lack of battery voltage meter. We can't remember the last time a voltage meter was mentioned in a review, either its presence or lack. Check out the video above for what the definition of "US hot hatch" used to be.

To solve diesel problem, VW might need two fixes

Fri, Oct 2 2015

Volkswagen says that a fix is on the way for its 11 million vehicles around the globe that are equipped with diesel engine software that can evade emissions tests. The problem might be far more complicated than simply creating a single solution for all of them, though. According to Automotive News citing Reuters, two remedies to cover different NOx-reducing systems could be necessary, and both potentially affect performance. Earlier examples of the EA 189 diesel engine used a lean NOx trap to reduce the harmful material coming from the tailpipe. According to experts in the Automotive News report, a software update might allow the engines to achieve compliance, but that could affect fuel economy. VW already tried this route once before the scandal came to light, but tests by the California Air Resources Board still showed the figures were too high. Later, some of the 2.0 TDI engines began using Selective Catalytic Reduction that reduced NOx by injecting a urea solution into the exhaust stream. According to Automotive News, a software update for this equipment might increase the amount of the substance used. Not only would that mean topping up the fluid more often, but there still could be some reduction in fuel economy. But, since the 2-liter, 4-cylinder TDI engine that sits inside the diesel vehicles first mentioned as being affected by the issue in the US don't have a urea treatment system, VW would need to install them into these cars. VW still hasn't officially outlined its solution (or solutions) to the emissions issue but is expected to soon. The automaker's long-term evasion of regulations with these diesel engines pumped vast quantities of additional NOx into the air. The substance is known to be linked with smog and acid rain. The US Department of Justice is already beginning an investigation into the company, and politicians are pushing for harsh punishments.
