For sale is a 1973 Volkswagen pop-top camper bus. It has a rebuilt 2 litre engine with less than four thousand miles on it. The transmission was also rebuilt when the engine was and a new clutch was installed at that time. I bought it last spring and used it all summer and so far this summer as a daily driver. It runs like a dream. I have made a lot of modifications to it, restoring the interior. It needs a few more small things and it will be perfect. The table has been re-surfaced and the interior wall panels have been painted white (just like original) with the exception of the sliding door. There is laminate flooring installed in the back and it looks really nice. I also put new curtains in all the way around. I installed a new refrigerator in the back which has a mirrored black tinted transparent front. It has a blue LED internal light which looks pretty cool. There is also a brand new top of the line 300 dollar yellow top battery installed in the back. All it really needs is to have a power inverter installed and hooked up to a switch to either run off of shore power or the battery bank. There is a battery switch hooked up so that the starting battery will be charged until full charge is reached, then it will switch over and charge the deep cycle (battery bank). I made a new roof assembly for the rear which just needs to be painted and installed. The roof assembly can also hold two 6x9 speakers, and there is also a place to hook up two more 6x9s in the front doors. I also made the door panel for the sliding door, it just hasn't been painted or installed yet. I just ran out of summer before I ran out of work to do on it last year. It has all new tires. It has new brake lines and pads on the front. I took it on a 12 hour road trip a couple weeks ago and she ran like a dream. The top is in decent condition with no major tears. The cots will need new canvas however. Age made them kind of brittle. It has the pop top with a cot for a child (or a really short person), another cot that goes across the front seats, and the fold out bed in the back. There is plenty of storage room. It has a new steering wheel and an old style oooga car horn with an 8 ball shifter. It definitely gets some attention. Also it has a complete set of brand new chrome hub caps that could probably be polished right back to new condition. They got a little dirty and a few rust spots from this winter. I have a lot more pictures if you would like to see some more. Just send me an e-mail at dadgeman@yahoo.com.
Also, I forgot to mention that I started installing LED light bars as opposed to dome lights for the interior of the camper and the dome light. Less power draw, and a cool blue tint. Just needs to be finished wiring to the switch. Wires are already run. I will also assist in shipping if you would like, or come pick it up and drive it home. Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Make this summer a great one. This baby is a blast.

VW LogBox and Race App performance data logger for R models [w/video]
Tue, Dec 30 2014Now that it's got a 300-horsepower Golf R to brag about, Volkswagen wants you to be able to brag about it accurately with the LogBox and Race App performance data logging combo. Plug the LogBox into your VW's OBD II port and it sends data over BlueTooth to the Race App, measuring variables like acceleration, distance, G-force and engine performance. If you're on a circuit, it uses Google Maps to make a map of the track, and you can record live video in-app to match with the data. Volkswagen says the LogBox will be available for R models and "a range of further Volkswagen cars," so you'll want to hit up your dealer with questions before ordering. It's available from the VW accessories store for 299 euros ($365 US), but right now the free app is only available in German, in the German-language iTunes and Google Play store. We imagine that will be corrected shortly; in the meantime, the video can show you how it works. Ferdinand Piech (1937-2019): The man who made VW global
Tue, Aug 27 2019Towering among his peers, a giant of the auto industry died Sunday night in Rosenheim/Upper Bavaria, Germany. Ferdinand Piech, a grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who conceived the original Volkswagen in the 1930s, was the most polarizing automotive executive of our times. And one who brought automotive technology further than anyone else. Ferdinand Porsche had a son, Ferdinand (called "Ferry"), and a daughter, Louise, who married the Viennese lawyer Anton Piech. They gave birth to Ferdinand Piech, and his proximity to two Alfa Romeo sports cars — Porsche had done some work for the Italians — and the "Berlin-Rome-Berlin" race car, developed by Porsche himself, gave birth to Piech's interest in cars. After his teachers in Salzburg told his mother he was "too stupid" to attend school there, Piech, who was open about his dyslexia, was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland. He subsequently moved on to Porsche, where he fixed issues with the 904 race car and did major work on the 911. But his greatest project was the Le Mans-winning 917 race car, developed at breathtaking financial cost. It annihilated the competition, but the family had had enough: Amid growing tension among the four cousins working at Porsche and Piech's uncle Ferry, the family decided to pull every family member, except for Ferry, out of their management positions. Piech started his own consultancy business, where he designed the famous five-cylinder diesel for Mercedes-Benz, but quickly moved on to Audi, first as an engineer and then as CEO, where he set out to transform the dull brand into a technology leader. Piech killed the Wankel engine and hammered out a number of ambitious and sophisticated technologies. Among them: The five-cylinder gasoline engine; Quattro all-wheel drive and Audi's fantastic rally successes; and turbocharging, developed with Fritz Indra, whom Piech recruited from Alpina. The Audi 100/200/5000 became the world's fastest production sedan, thanks to their superior aerodynamics. Piech also launched zinc-coated bodies for longevity — and gave diesel technology a decisive boost with the advent of the fast and ultra-efficient TDI engines. Less known: Piech also decided to put larger gas tanks into cars. Customers loved it. Piech's first-generation Audi V8 was met with derision by competitors; it was too obviously based on the 200/5000.
Audi spending an additional $2.5 billion on expansion through 2019
Thu, Jan 1 2015Every year, it seems the Volkswagen Group announces a new and larger spend to push growth and profit, with Audi a regular recipient of the moolah. That's reasonable, seeing as hauls in 40 percent of Group operating profits. In December last year Audi said it would spend an additional 100 million euros ($122M US) per year through 2018 to develop new models and expand production, targeting 60 models by 2020 and luxury sales leadership. This month Audi said it will boost that by another two billion euros ($2.5B US) over the next five years, for a total outlay of 24 billion euros from 2014 to 2019. Something like 70 percent of those billions will be spent on new models, technology like "connectivity and lightweight construction," and factory expansion at its plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Most of the ten models that will plump the lineup to 60 cars will mainly be aimed at the C and D segments, as well as crossovers, the brand's burgeoning portfolio of PHEV models, and all-electric cars that will begin staking ground in the segment. The big spend comes at the same time as Audi is working hard to reduce costs by $2.5 billion to maintain profitability, part of a larger push by VW to cut costs by $6.1 billion by 2017. More than a billion euros will go to new factories in Mexico and Brazil. Work begins on the Mexico plant next year, and when it comes on-line in 2016, Audi's Q5 successor will roll out of its warehouse doors; Audi has already announced it will hire 850 more workers next year in Mexico. When that's done, Mexico's production of German luxury cars will only trail that of Germany, China and the US. The company's Brazil plant will produce the A3 and S3 starting next year, and the brand figures luxury car buying there will triple by 2017.
