THIS IS AN ORIGINAL CALIFORNIA CAR 1972 VOLKSWAGEN WESTFALIA CAMPMOBILE BUS WITH THE POP TOP CANVAS SLEEPER AND 1700cc ENGINE.  HAS 91,XXX MILES.  THIS IS THE STRAIGHTEST, MOST RUST-FREE VINTAGE VW I'VE EVER SEEN.  I'M NO EXPERT, BUT I'VE LOOKED AT QUITE A FEW.  IT RUNS AND DRIVES WELL.  VIDEOS AND PICTURES TELL THE STORY, BUT I'LL LIST AS MUCH AS I CAN HERE:

PROS:
  • MINIMAL SURFACE RUST (SOME "WORSE" SPOTS, BUT THEY ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN).
  • SUPER STRAIGHT BODY (ONE SPOT AT ENGINE BAY DOOR BOTTOM HAS DAMAGE).
  • ENGINE, TRANNY AND CLUTCH ARE STRONG.
  • NEW TIRES.
  • BRAKES ARE STRONG, NO PULLING.
  • LIGHTS AND SIGNALS WORK.
  • WIPERS WORK ON BOTH SPEEDS, BUT SOMETHING DID START SQUEAKING ON AND OFF AFTER TWO HOURS OF USE.
  • GLASS AND SCREENS ARE ALL GOOD AND WINDOWS ALL WORK.
  • AFTERMARKET RADIO WITH REMOTE AND SPEAKERS.
  • SUPER CLEAN INTERIOR.
  • GREAT POP TOP CANVAS (MINIMAL SMALL HOLES) WITH OEM FOLDING SLEEPER.
  • SPEEDO AND ODOMETER WORK.
  • BONUS SOLAR PANEL SYSTEM WITH 120V AND 12V CAPABILITY.
  • SINK WORKS, NICE ICE BOX.
  • DOORS ALL WORK WELL.  SOME OF THE LOCKS ARE QUITE TIGHT TO TURN, BUT THEY ALL WORK.
  • COMES WITH TWO KEYS.
  • ORIGINAL MANUALS INCLUDED.
CONS:
  • PAINT: MATTE BROWN ON THE BOTTOM WAS SPRAYED ON BY PREVIOUS OWNER.  NOT TERRIBLE, BUT NOT GREAT.  A CLEAR COAT ON IT WOULD DO WONDERS, BUT A COMPLETE RE-SPRAY WOULD TAKE THIS BUS TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
  • CHIP COATING APPLIED TO THE FRONT.
  • COUPLE SMALL CRACKS IN THE DASH.
  • RUBBER LATCH HANDLE ON THE GLOVE BOX IS TEARING FROM ITS BASE, BUT STILL WORKS.
  • INTERIOR HANDLE FOR SIDE DOOR HAS BROKEN.  NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.  DOOR STILL OPENS WITH ATTACHED VISE GRIP PLIERS.
  • SMALL HOLES IN THE TOP CANVAS.
  • ENGINE STALLED ON ME A COUPLE OF TIMES WHEN COLD.  MAY NEED ATTENTION.  RUNS DOWN THE ROAD LIKE A CHAMP.
  • SOME FLUID LEAKS AT ENGINE.  NOT SURE FROM WHERE, BUT IS PRETTY MINOR.  OIL LEVEL WAS GOOD WHEN I CHECKED IT.
  • DENT AT REAR BOTTOM OF ENGINE BAY DOOR.

IF I MISSED ANYTHING (I'M SURE I HAVE), PLEASE ASK.  WATCH BOTH VIDEOS FIRST.  THANKS TO ALL FOR LOOKING!

Volkswagen formally introduces super-efficient XL1

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Lightweight and low drag are hallmarks of great sportscar design. But when paired with a super-efficient, hybrid powertrain, you have the Volkswagen's XL1 that has been formally introduced in Geneva today.
When the 1,700-lb, carbon-fiber-bodied two-seater hits the road, its claimed 261 miles per gallon will make it the world's most-fuel-efficient production car. Though "production car" might be a stretch since VW said in a February press release that the XL1 would be built using "handcrafting-like production methods." We translate that to mean you won't be seeing many of these cars on the road. Though no one at VW has mentioned pricing yet, early rumors suggested a six-figure price tag.
That's supercar budget for a vehicle that has a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder diesel engine and a 27hp electric motor. With numbers like that, owners can expect 0-62 mph times of 12.7 seconds and top speed near 100 mph.

Former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign

Sat, Dec 27 2014

The latest word from the international community of automotive designers has it that Wolfgang Egger is leaving Italdesign, but just where the accomplished designer will land next and who will take his place remain big question marks. Egger is a designer who has bounced back and forth between Italy and Germany over the course of his career. He was born in Germany but studied in Milan. He began his career at Alfa Romeo in 1989 and was named its chief designer by 1993 before being head-hunted by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 to head up the design department at Seat. A few years later he went returned to Italy to run the Lancia design department, and was subsequently renamed to the same post at Alfa Romeo. In 2007 he went back to his native Germany to head up the Audi design office, over which he assumed complete responsibility by 2012, but left Audi in 2013 to run Italdesign. For those unfamiliar, Italdesign is the studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (pictured at left next to Egger) back in 1968 but which, along with many other Italian design houses, fell on hard times in recent years. The Volkswagen Group swooped in to rescue the troubled studio in 2010, turning it into something of an in-house advanced design department to provide an alternative perspective on the direction in which the group and its various brands could take their respective designs moving forward. With Egger now leaving its helm, Italdesign and its German parent company will need to find his replacement, and we're sure they'll announce one in due course. The bigger question on our minds, however, is where Egger himself will head next. Given the path his career has taken to date, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group or find a new role in the expanding Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire. Then again, Egger could find it time to open an entirely new chapter. Watch this space. Ten of the greatest Super Bowl car commercials of all time

Thu, Jan 28 2016

With an average of over 100 million viewers each year, the Super Bowl always has advertisers bringing out the big guns. And for those among us who don't know the difference between a safety and a touchback, those commercials can be one of the most compelling aspects of the annual ritual. Car companies, in particular, have a long history of making the most of the huge Super Bowl audience by debuting some of the most memorable advertisements that have ever aired on television. So, in preparation for the new batch we'll be seeing this coming Sunday, here's a collection of our favorites from the past. 10. Audi – The Godfather When Audi created this homage to the quintessential gangster movie to promote its newest sports car, the company managed to make a commercial that was simultaneously funny, a little bit disturbing, and most importantly memorable. 9. Maserati – Strike This one might start out slow, but it delivers not only with the wicked sound of the third-generation Ghibli's engine, but with an interesting message about hubris in the auto industry as well. 8. Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo – Dream Directed by none other than Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien), this dystopian spot has centers around a narrator who explains that in his dream the bad guys are unable to catch him despite their best efforts by way of street bikes, race cars, and supersonic jets. While the twin-turbocharged 300ZX car was certainly a performance powerhouse to be reckoned with in its day, the concept and execution of this one does come off a little bit campy now – but in a good way. Then again, it is a dream, after all. 7. General Motors – Robot This one is unique in that it's genuinely depressing on a profound level. Who would've thought that the simulated suicide of a lovable, anthropomorphic car-building robot who has fallen on hard times could be such a downer? 6. Nissan – With Dad Although the debut season of its new LMP1 racer didn't exactly turn out how the team hoped it would, there's no denying that Nissan's depiction of a strained father-and-son relationship that eventually leads to redemption (and the introduction of the 2016 Maxima) tugs at the heartstrings. 5. Volkswagen – Big Day A surprisingly poignant advert, this one might be low on dialogue but it certainly gets its message across. And just as the dramatic soundtrack begins to lull the viewer into a sense of security, our expectations are upended. 4.
