First, let me say that I am listing this bus for sale reluctantly. Not only because this bus was bought brand new the day I was born, but because it’s so special. I acquired this bus only a few months ago in trade on my Porsche 356. I have owned over 30 VW’s including very rare and unique models, but in all my days with Volkswagens never seen a vehicle with a level of documentation like this. And I’m not talking about having a “date correct” owner’s manual and a mail order birth certificate from VW. Anyone can get one of those. What I’m talking about here is special. I’m talking about an over-the-top 40 year accumulation of receipts and documents that cannot be gained in any other way except from day 1. In fact, it started before the Bus was even bought new. First let’s start with this: The original VW brochure she (the original owner Barbara), got while she was “in the market” for a bus. She kept it! Then it goes from there: The original sales contract from the dealership, original window sticker, original PAPER dealership plates, temporary registration plates and window decal, original owners manual, warranty paperwork, etc., etc.; All of this alone is enough to make this Bus special. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. The original owner kept decades of every single receipt and paper. Over $15,000 dollars of receipts and meticulously documented expenses are here. Have you ever known someone that bought a warranty on everything and kept everything? Someone so strict they followed their vehicle recommended maintenance religiously? Well this lady was her! There are notes documenting “break in periods” and “first scheduled maintenance” visits, it goes on and on. When she bought new tires, she not only kept the receipt, (all neatly stapled with the warranty paperwork), but she noted and diagramed when the tires were rotated!! No kidding. And there are several of these sketches, see the pics! And if you think this is a little “eccentric” then how about writing down every time she got gas!! Including date, mileage, and fuel economy! Who does this???  There is even a hand written letter to the dealership to request compensation for a $7 flasher relay she felt was covered under warranty but had to pay for. This lady was thorough! Anyone who knows investment value of a vintage vehicle knows what having a level of documentation such as this means. Even if the Bus itself did not exist anymore, this would be something special. But it does.

This bus was well loved from day 1. It was bought brand new by its loving female owner on December 26th 1972 at the famous Circle VW in Long Beach California. She special ordered it with factory stripes which are noted on the original contract of sale and that it still displays proudly. This bus was well cared for and maintained meticulously. The 72 Bus was the first year for the new larger Type 4 engine which was a huge improvement over the smaller outdated type 1 engines prior. The mechanical condition of this bus is exceptional and can be driven anywhere.

The original paint is completely untouched. The red color has faded in many spots and has started to wear on all the edges where the factory grey primer has begun to show though. It’s no secret that patina is all the rage these days, and patina doesn’t get any better than this! The roof has heavy oxidation from many years of sun exposure, but has no way compromised the metal surfaces. All the glass and rubber is in excellent condition. Trim is all very presentable and everything on the bus works to my knowledge.

The interior is in very nice condition for its age. There is only one part on the very rear seat were the material has started to fray due to what looks like many years of sun exposure. The great thing is that it is all untouched and un-restored. The original rear rubber floor mats are still in great condition. The dashboard is excellent. The stock radio “delete” is uncut and the dash is not cracked or faded out. All factory safety decals, etc. are all intact as they were when new. The headliner is absolutely perfect. I have the factory original keys and all locks work.

Things to make mention of with the bus: As mentioned before, the third seat has material in one spot on top that has started to tear from sun exposure; It is not through to the inside but rather just the top layer of vinyl; There is a "crease" on the right side of the body, which is partially on the door and rear section. It is not real bad and has not scraped the paint. The front rubber floor mat is damaged from wear a right below the drivers seat; There is a “ding” on the rear corner aluminum body trim. The front original license plate is a little banged up. The bus runs great and I would not be afraid to drive anywhere.

The bus is a true time capsule. People use the term “original” or “survivor” so much these days. But repaints or original “style” paint jobs don’t mean original. Restored cars are nice but they are NOT original. I hate to sound clich'e, but they are only original ONCE. This but is an un-restored, original, survivor Volkswagen. Its condition, along with the incredible documentation that it has makes this bus very special. You will not find another bus with this level of documentation for sale currently. I have a large number of photos for viewing at the following link:

Did Lexus make a BMW? Or did BMW make a Lexus? This and other 2017 surprises

Fri, Dec 29 2017

It's that time of year again. The calendar is about to reach its end, Star Trek Cats 2018 is about to take its place, and I'm reflecting about all the cars that graced my driveway this year or summoned me to exotic places. You know, like Stuttgart or Phoenix. In 2017, I drove at least 57, and as I perused the list of them, I started to notice a common refrain: "This car surprised me." Most were pleasant surprises, but there were a few head scratchers and facepalms for good measure. In both cases, it was generally the result of car companies seemingly trying to break out of an existing mold. Nowhere was that more apparent than the pair of Lexuses slathered in Infrared paint: The LS 500 that left me this week and the LC 500 that was my favorite car of 2017. Though Lexus has been trying to shake its crusty, gold-packaged reputation for some time now, its efforts always seemed like an old man choosing Hollister to redo his wardrobe after realizing it hasn't been updated since 1987. I fell in love with the LC, genuinely floored by its near-perfect take on the GT. It's characterful in sound, appearance and tactility. It was at home in the city, in the mountain and on the open road. It was both comfortable and thrilling, and after driving the mechanically related LS 500, I can report that the LC's talents aren't an outlier. The LS 500's turbo V6 may make different noises than the LC's naturally aspirated V8, but it nevertheless invigorates the cabin when the car is placed in Sport+ mode. The steering is truly communicative, body motions are kept in miraculous check, and I absolutely forgot I was in an enormous luxury limo ... and a Lexus one at that. It was everything that the BMW 530e was not. I drove that on the exact same roads and was utterly bored the entire time. Generally doughy, lifeless steering, more distant than Planet 9. And no, the plug-in hybrid powertrain had nothing to do with that. At least it shouldn't. The Porsche Panamera S e-Hybrid I also drove this year proves that, as do the Hyundai Ioniqs, which are surprisingly adept and fun little cars regardless of what powers their wheels (Hyundai + hybrid = fun really blew me away). I would drive that Lexus LS F Sport over the BMW 5 Series any day of the week, which seems like a shocking thing to say in relation to either car. While Lexus is seemingly breaking out of its old crusty mold, BMW seems to be climbing into one.

Volkswagen debuts MkVII-based diesel Golf GTD

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

As Volkswagen prepares for the launch of the seventh-generation Golf, it continues to show off some of the car's different variants. With the standard Golf and the ultra-efficient BlueMotion Concept out of the way, now we're finally starting to see some of the sportier versions planned for the hatchback. Confirmed for a debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen has now given us our first glimpse at the Golf GTD.
Just think of the GTD as a diesel version of the GTI with all the handling and styling upgrades, and then add a torquey engine to the equation. (We had the chance to sample the current GTD over the summer, so click here to read more.) To go with the new body style, VW also gave the GTD a new TDI engine consisting of a similar turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four layout but with an output of 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque - that's an increase of 14 hp and 22 lb-ft over the current GTD. That's a pretty good oomph, but the GTD won't be setting any acceleration records with VW quoting a 0-62 mile per hour time of 7.5 seconds thanks to the car's 3,036-pound curb weight.
The styling of the MkVII Golf lends itself quite well to the more aggressive body kit found on the GTD (and likely matching the GTI). The new front fascia and blacked-out grille give the GTD a sporty look up front, while 17-inch sport wheels, rocker panel extensions and smoked LED taillights finish off the visual changes. The GTD will only be offered in three exterior colors: Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. As expected, the interior gets the plaid seat inserts and flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, but the car also gets stainless steel pedals, a black headliner, ambient cabin lighting and a specific gauge cluster readout.

Recharge Wrap-up: Volkswagen Sustainability Council meets, Zee.Aero flying car spotted?

Wed, Oct 26 2016

The Volkswagen Sustainability Council held its inaugural meeting in Berlin. Made up of nine international experts, the council will advise VW and take action on its own as it sees fit. In the meeting, the council decided that in 2017 it will focus on tackling CO2 emissions, planning for post-2025 regulations, and assisting the automaker's "transformation from car manufacturer to mobility services provider," as VW Chairman Matthias Muller puts it. Volkswagen has approved 20 million euros (about $21.75 million) in funding for Sustainability Council projects for its first two years. "We are fully aware of the large transformation that lays ahead Volkswagen Group," says George Kell, Sustainability Council Chair and Founding Director of UN Global Compact. "We were invited to be part of this journey and are very much looking forward on being actively involved in the development of this journey." Read more at Green Car Congress, or from Volkswagen. Honda plans to ramp up its share of hybrids sold in the US. In response to increasingly strict emissions standards, the company wants electrified vehicles (including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell vehicles) to make up two-thirds of Honda and Acura sales in US by 2030. Some analysts are skeptical, though. Christopher Richter of CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets says that dealers are telling Honda they don't want hybrids. "Unless there's a change in what dealers want, I don't think they are going to get there that fast," Richter says. Read more at Automotive News. Witnesses report spotting what could possibly be the Zee.Aero electric aircraft at Hollister Airport in California. Zee.Aero, a startup funded by Google cofounder Larry Page, has a hangar at that airport, where a photo was taken of the aircraft in question. The craft is said to be capable of vertical takeoff and landing and can fit in a one-car garage, earning it the "flying car" moniker. Eyewitness Saul Gomez described the aircraft as "quiet" and "hovering 20, 25 feet off the ground." Read more at Electrek, and watch the interview at Mercury News.
