Alright, first of all thanks for looking at "Flo"...

"Flo" has been a blast for the last three years but she needs to move on. Here's the story so far.. I bought this bus three years ago from a guy in PA. he had bought it a year earlier from a retired Navy Capt who had her for quite some time. She was at one point painted at the Navy base. Thats all I have for a background. That being said, she is a great little bus .Yes it has rust. Its 40 years old and has spent some time at the beach. I have put photos of all the rust up so that there are no questions. She did a 3300 mile road trip, and recently a 1000 mile trip with no issues. There is a small oil leak which should be fixed Wednesday. She also has a brand new Bosch generator. She will run 65mph all day (on flat ground of course.) I have quite of bit extras to throw in..

Car cover (has small hole)
VW dish set
A bunch of handy manuals
Tent system that connects to side door (never used it)
Yakima roof rack ($350 value)
Extra parts (fuel filter,belts etc)
New in the box tail lights
RV hook up (electric only)
Sweet dash hula girl!
Front spare tire

There is also a RV battery set up in the back with a knife switch. We use it to power cell phone chargers/laptops etc.. When you use the RV cord, there are two standard 110 outlets to power space heaters. Like I said earlier it has rust. The paint is also peeling on the pop top.  The seals also need to be replaced. It wouldn't take much to fix her up right. The inside is in great shape. It is mostly stock minus the fridge. The canvas on the pop top is in good shape. All the zippers work etc. Seat surfaces are all in good shape. This thing is awesome to camp with. If you are a surfer than you need this bus. It is soo much fun to go on trips with Flo. Everywhere I go someone has a story about a bus and be prepared to get the shaka all the time! This is a solid bus and have been reluctant to sell her. The reserve is a very fair price. Please don't message me asking it. I will answer all other questions in a timely manner. Open to trades for a truck 250/2500 etc, truck/camper combo or C class RV. Don't worry, I'll peel all the surf stickers off for you.. It is also up for sale locally so I may end auction early.

Happy bidding and thanks again!

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

Import pickup truck-killing Chicken Tax to be repealed?

Tue, Jun 30 2015

After over 50 years, the so-called Chicken Tax may finally be going the way of the dodo. Two pending trade deals with countries in the Pacific Rim and Europe potentially could open the US auto market up to imported trucks, if the measures pass. Although, it still might be a while before you can own that Volkswagen Amarok or Toyota Hilux, if ever. The 25-percent import tariff that the Chicken Tax imposes on foreign trucks essentially makes the things all but impossible to sell one profitably in the US, which lends a distinct advantage to domestic pickups. Both the Trans-Pacific Partnership with 12 counties and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union would finally end the charge. According to Automotive News though, don't expect new pickups to flood the market, at least not immediately. These deals might roll back the tariff gradually over time, and in the case of Japan, it could be as long as 25 years before fully free trade. Furthermore, Thailand, a major truck builder in Asia, isn't currently part of the deal, and any new models here would still need to meet safety and emissions rules, as well. Automotive News gauged the very early intentions of several automakers with foreign-built trucks, and they weren't necessarily champing at the bit to start imports. Toyota thinks the Hilux sits between the Tundra and Tacoma, and Mazda doesn't think the BT-50 fits its image here. Also, VW doesn't necessarily want to bring the Amarok over from Hannover. There is previous precedent for companies at least considering bringing in pickup trucks after the Chicken Tax's demise, though. The Pacific free trade deal could be done as soon as this fall, while the EU one is likely further out, according to Automotive News. Given enough time, the more accessible ports could allow some new trucks to enter the market.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
