Up for sale is our much loved and cared for '71 VW Bus aka "Bird". This is the one you've been looking for!

It's the sought after "golden" year for the bay window buses and a deluxe trim model. She needs nothing but a new owner to enjoy and drive anywhere. No cheap parts are ever used in this family who has owned and cared for various vintage VW's since 1996. I bought the bus out of Idaho after it had been rear ended.  The insurance company had deemed it salvage because they sadly saw very little value in it.  The bus was not disabled in any way as the damage was purely cosmetic.  It had been hit straight on from the back so I replaced the decklid and pulled out both corners. This is when it got the VW Turquoise Green L380 color.  I then took it to the Florida DMV so it could go through the proper inspection procedure.  It passed with no problem and was issued a rebuilt title. Again, I have pictures of all of this.

I have a stack of receipts from when I purchased it, as well as all the receipts from parts that I have changed out during my ownership and when it had the brake system serviced.  The previous owner had the engine overhauled and spent almost $2000 doing so.  It shows because it has run perfectly.  Being that it has lived with a VW family, it has received all the proper maintenance a vintage air-cooled VW deserves.  Everything is stock and there are no customized or cheap parts used.  This bus has the proper 1600 dual port engine. Even details like the Hankook RA08 tires, for those that know, are the correct tire for a bus. She runs strong, shifts smooth and stops straight.  It makes no funny sounds...nothing. I've loaded up the family and have driven it down to Key West and back and would not hesitate driving it anywhere.

The odometer shows 29,318 but I can't say what the exact miles are since I have only owned it for just over 3 years.  The condition of the bus though, based on my VW experience, would suggest 129,318.  My wife is still driving it on a regular basis so actual miles will be slightly higher by auction end.

It was repainted when purchased in May 2010 and some rust is now coming through on the rockers. There are fiberglass repairs in the drivers and passengers floor, otherwise this is a very solid bus. I have receipts and photos of before, during and after the paint work from when I first bought it. All the rubber seals are in very good to new condition (sliding door rubber just replaced) although it is time to replace both front door seals as they are looking weathered.  It needs sun visors, it just never bothered me not to have them.  The interior is clean and neat , although the headliner, at the rear has some tears.  The Zbed folds down and works properly.

New lenses and seals, front and back
New battery
Like new tires - Hankook RA08
New chrome trim rings
New stereo - MP3, USB, SDcard, Satelite ready
3 year old paint including bumpers
New antenna
New air cleaner hose
New rear interior upholstery
New kick panels in the front cab area
New igintion switch with correct VW keys
Recent brake lines, pads, shoes
and MORE...Lots of finishing details because mechanically, the bus has needed nothing but maintenance

The BuyItNow price is very fair for the condition of this bus, so I encourage you to jump on it before it's gone.  I reserve the right to cancel the auction early as the bus is available for sale locally as well. Come see it in person or ask for specific pictures if you're not in town, I'd be glad to send them as well as copies of the engine work and the paint/body work that was done.

A $500 deposit is required within 24 hours of auction close. Once full payment has been secured, the title will be transferred. If you are local, we can take care of all of this in person. If you are not, I will accept payment through a direct wire transfer. Once the money is in my account, I will overnight the title to your location. I am more than happy to work with a transporter, but arranging and financing the transporting of the vehicle is entirely the buyers responsibility.

I have been a buyer and seller on eBay since 2000 and have a perfect feedback rating because what I sell is EXACTLY what I say it is...BID and BUY with CONFIDENCE!

A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]

Thu, Dec 18 2014

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.

VW using other manufacturing locations as leverage in battle with TN [w/video]

Sat, 26 Apr 2014

We've reached a new step in the ongoing drama at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, TN. The United Auto Workers recently dropped its opposition to the union vote and agreed that it wouldn't hold another ballot for at least a year. Now, the new question becomes where VW is going to build its forthcoming midsize SUV.
Earlier, it had been considered all but certain that the SUV, likely a production version of the CrossBlue concept (pictured above), would be built in Tennessee. However, it seems the Chattanooga factory might have competition to produce it. In emails obtained by The Detroit News, VW's lawyer wrote to the Tennessee economic development department in January saying, "While we understand there are some 'non-deal' issues that are causing a delay in the TN solution, VW has been successful in reaching agreement on terms at the alternative locations."
As previously reported, the state of Tennessee allegedly offered VW about $300 million in incentives to build the vehicle there and create an estimated 1,350 jobs, but it later rescinded the deal. Newly leaked documents from NewsChannel 5 (WTVF-TV) in Nashville allegedly show just how close that offer was to being completed. It appears that VW actually sent the government the first draft of a memorandum of understanding agreeing to the incentives, but the state removed the offer in late January.

New investor allows Suzuki to fend off VW

Tue, Aug 4 2015

After years of legal wrangling, the long-soured partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki looks finally to be coming out of arbitration, according to Bloomberg. As a sign of the Japanese brand's improved fortunes, hedge fund Third Point LLC recently bought an undisclosed stake in the company. The investor reported seeing a major opportunity in the successful Maruti Suzuki business in India. As an investment, the only major problem that Third Point found with Suzuki was its legal battle with VW. "The company's greatest asset is its low-cost manufacturing process for vehicles for the emerging market consumer," the fund said in a letter, according to Bloomberg. Third Point reportedly also wants a seat on Suzuki's board, despite being a minority shareholder. The alliance between Suzuki and VW goes back to late 2009. In the deal, the Japanese brand was meant to get access to cutting-edge tech, and the German firm got a helping hand towards better establishing itself in India and Southeast Asia. Things didn't go as planned, though. Less than two years later, Suzuki's boss publicly derided the deal. Eventually, the allegations started going back and forth, and the two have been working out a way to untangle practically ever since. Among the biggest issue has been how to get back the 19.9 percent stake that VW purchased. According to Bloomberg, the arbitration is now technically over. With the divorce nearly final, the two sides are just waiting on a decision on how to split things up. Suzuki may even just buy VW's stake to get the shares back.
