Up for sell is our 1970 Westy. We are the second owners and have been restoring her for over a year but are now forced to sell her due to our new baby being born who btw has "colic". Needless to say we simply don't have the time to enjoy her or get her completely finished :( She is 95% complete w a few items left. I will try to list everything that needs finished along w the more than 18k invested in her. We started w taking her down to bare metal and replacing the battery tray area and windshield w new sheet metal. She was then painted w a 2 stage Dupont paint job; more than 9k spent on paint and body work alone. The top was stripped as well and repainted w marine grade fiberglass paint. Replaced the top w a new Go-Westy hemp temp, replaced all seals and kept all the original VW glass accept for the back drivers side and a brand new PGW windshield. Fresh rebuilt 1600 cc motor will less than 350 miles: valves will need to be readjusted at 500 miles by new owner if sold, most VW owners will know this :). New interior seat covers, panels, kick panels, back seats and jumper seat. New handmade cabinets made by a local wood shop here in St. Pete. They were made out of maple then stained and sealed. We were able to find 1/8 birch plywood like the original and stained and sealed those as well. New Hankook rubber all the way around as well. New Alpine CD w Ipod adapter and new pioneer speakers. We also have the original cabinets and sink that I will include. We will also include a brand new set of Kadron dual carbs that we were going to put on but again we simply have not gotten to it. The wiring harness has also been replaced as well as the dash has been completely gone thru. Forgot to mention it also has a tow hitch and bar although we have never used it! You could easily pull a small trailer behind it for camping etc.... What needs finished: Z-bed and cabinets need screwed down but I was going to wait obviously until I finished the floor. I have two panels that need finished; rear door hatch and sliding door. I will try to complete before the sale but again we are dealing w running a restaurant day to day and a baby w Colic. The floor needs completed which is an easy job for anyone w basic wood working knowledge. We have a brand new seal that goes around the inside of the pop-top opening as well, this holds some of the panels in place as well, it just needs glued down. We also have the kids cot along w brand new canvass that just needs to be installed then screwed down in the tent area above. (also have the original kids cot and frame that goes over the front seats, rare to have the original :) Really sad to be even listing this on Ebay and we would really love to see it go to a family that will appreciate her. She really is a piece of art in our eyes and its gonna be heart breaking to see her go. Forgot to mention that we are currently having to relocate our restaurant after more than 2 years to make way for a big corporate box store coming in :( Simply put, other things have become more important unfortunately. Thank you! |

Lamborghini and Bentley may hold off on SUVs so VW can conserve cash
Thu, 11 Oct 2012After surveying the European economic scene, Volkswagen may have decided now is not the time to launch utility vehicles with Bentley and Lamborghini badges. Bentley officials say they will continue to push for support for the EXP 9 F and Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelman has said planning for the Urus will continue until VW tells it to stop.
That decision could come on November 23, when VW's board will vote on the company's budget for equipment, factories and vehicles. With VW's sales slowing and the Euro economy slumping further, some industry watchers say the company is more likely to build its cash reserves than to introduce super-expensive luxury SUVs or crossovers.
"Such vehicles are anything but obligatory during a crisis," says Frankfurt-based Equinet AG analyst Tim Schuldt in a new Automotive News Europe story. "Delaying their launch would be no drama but help save costs."
Prop-driven VW Beetle hopes to land in Bonneville [w/video]
Thu, 10 Jan 2013Sometimes you meet folks who, when they tell you "Hey, I have an idea," your reflex response is to stop what you're doing and tell yourself, "Get ready...." We imagine Mike Niemans is one of those folks, and the idea in question is putting a tank engine on a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. Not just any old tank engine - as if there were such a thing when we're talking about putting them in cars - but a 668-cubic-inch, 220-horsepower radial engine built by Continental in 1941 and procured from an M2 tank.
In the image above Nieman is using the tank clutch hub to get the motor set up, but in one of the images below you can see what really belongs back there is: a two-inch, reverse-pitch prop taken from a wind generator. He says there's enough mojo with the propeller action to get the car rolling down the runway like a jet when he gives it gas - and speaking of gas, the engine's been refitted to run on propane.
After a few safety tweaks Nieman's going to take the matte-black Beetle to Bonneville, "put the prop on, let her go and see what happens!" We can't wait to see the video of that. There are two shakedown videos below to get you ready.
Ecotricity offering 1,000 free EV miles to new customers
Thu, Feb 13 2014Ecotricity is offering electric vehicle drivers in the United Kingdom an lengthy incentive for using green energy: 1,000 miles of free fast charging per year. Called "Green Electricity + Car," the program will power customers' homes with renewable power allow them to charge their cars through Ecotricity's national network of fast chargers, which the company has named the Electric Highway. It makes complete sense for Ecotricity. "To get the greatest environmental benefit from an electric car, it needs to be charged using 100 percent green electricity from the wind and the sun – otherwise you're still powering it from dirty fossil fuels," wrote Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity. Ecotricity, a UK-based producer of green energy, wants to bring fast charging to 90 percent of highway service stations around the UK in the near future and four fast chargers are installed per week under the Electric Highway campaign, the company says. Users can fast charge their EVs in 20-to-30 minutes. Ecotricity recently instituted a price freeze for all gas and electricity customers until April 1, reducing energy costs below what's being billed by the country's "Big Six" energy companies. Green Electricity + Car coincides with Volkswagen bringing its electric e-Up! to the British market. Volkswagen Group (UK) Limited imports VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda brand vehicles and has signed a deal with Ecotricity as its official green energy supplier. Volkswagen Group customers purchasing an EV through one of its brands can take advantage of a new, reduced-cost Ecotricity tariff and a free smart meter installation. 08 February 2014 Green Electricity + Car Drivers of electric cars will receive 1,000 free miles every year with a new electricity tariff being launched by green energy company Ecotricity. Green Electricity + Car – will not only power customers homes with green energy but also their cars (either 100% electric or plug-in hybrids), plus they'll get free access to Ecotricity's national network of fast chargers[1] – the Electric Highway. This latest move comes after Ecotricity announced a price freeze for all gas and electricity customers until the end of winter (April 1st), making them cheaper[2] than the standard tariff of the Big Six energy companies.
