You are bidding on a wonderful original surviving example of the iconic 1970 Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile "pop-top" van.  She is in exceptional running and driving condition, with tight steering, sound brakes, a good clutch, and a precise-shifting four-speed manual transmission.  The Westie starts right up, even cold.  Driving the van inspires confidence, not apprehension... she's rock solid.

The Westfalia Campmobile features include the pop-up camper top, fold-out upper level sleeping cot, rear seat which converts into a very spacious bed, a folding inside dining table, hand-pump sink with water reservoir, fold-out cutting board/prep surface (inside), fold-out serving tray (outside), icebox, 110v outlets (*must be externally plugged in for power), curtains, privacy snaps, etc.  It can comfortably sleep three adults, or two adults and a couple kids.

The odometer shows 56,300 miles which are believed to be original and accurate.  The engine runs great, sounds great, and doesn't have any smoke, noise, or oil-consumption issues.  There is no apparent outer body, or interior floor rust-through anywhere.  In fact, the only evidence I can find of rust anywhere is in the battery tray area, which was replaced with a wooden tray.  Very straight, sound, solid.

The body lines are excellent, all the doors open and shut nicely, including the rear hatch, side door, and engine cover.  There are minor dings, chips, and blemishes on the paint consistent with a vehicle that has been used, but not abused.

Tires are good, including the spare.  The glass is good all around.  The window rubbers show their age, but still seal as they should.  The pop-top is also weather-tight, with what appears to be original canvas with a few lower-edge mends.  The overhead cot mechanism is sound, as is the canvas cot itself.  There is a netting panel that I believe fits the rear hatch cover so you can sleep with the hatch open.

All the windows open and close as they should, including the louvered "storm" windows.  The curtain tracks are present throughout, and the paint in the interior is "the" original ivory.  The upholstery is also original and in very good condition overall.  The wood inside is original and in very good condition.  The floor under the carpet seems to also be the original wood.

In the cockpit, both bucket seats are in good shape with the driver's having a small missing/torn piece.  The dash pad is without cracks, as is the dash panel.  The metal floorboards are excellent throughout, wearing original paint.

The lights, turn signals, flasher, wipers, heater,  and blower all work as they should.

As for missing, funky, requiring repair, etc. the list is minor:  Does not have complete original curtains.  Wiper control knob missing, as is the ash tray, radio, front door panels, and front rubber floor mat... the Westy was left unlocked, apparently another owner "needed" the parts more than I.  They are inexpensive and easy to obtain, but you won't miss them if you just want to hop in and drive.  The gas gauge is not entirely accurate... it works, but not precisely.  The ignition switch is original; the "start" position has failed... turn the key on as you normally would, and depress a hidden start button.  Or, replace the switch and it works normally.  That is everything I can think of.

To recap, the van is reliable, predictable, solid, sound, and sweet... you will love her if this is the vehicle you've been wanting.  Solid bones to completely restore if you wish, but way nice enough to enjoy as-is without doing anything.

Clear title, no brands or issues.  While I am making every effort to describe the vehicle accurately, it is in fact a 43-year-old classic, and therefore being sold as-is, without warranty or guarantee expressed, written, or implied.  I welcome an in-person inspection if you are local, or if you wish to have a third party perform same.  Shipping is the full responsibility of the buyer.  I will make myself available for loading on short notice.

Please be prepared to remit payment in full within 3 days of auction's end via bank wire transfer, or cash in person.

You may call me directly at 360-936-9257 with any questions, etc.  I must reserve the right to end the auction early, as I have the vehicle advertised locally as well.  I am open to a fair offer if you would like me to end to you through ebay... you may email or call to inquire.  Reserve is fair, and someone will get the Westy they've always wanted.

Volkswagen looking to acquire Proton, Lotus?

Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Let's say you're an automaker bent on world domination looking to grow your sales. That's going to have you looking at Asian markets, because that's where some of the biggest growth has been, and that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing as it considers making another run at Malaysia's Proton.
Reuters reports that Volkswagen is interested in at least a partial stake, if not a controlling interest in Lotus-parent Proton as a way to continue a production presence in the region without having to build its own factory.
Volkswagen already builds the Passat in a DRB-HICOM facility in Pekan, Malaysia, and plans are in place to build the Jetta and Polo there, as well. With both southeast Asia and its relationship with Proton figuring so importantly in Volkswagen's plans for expansion, buying into Proton can help ensure stability. Volkswagen is being tight-lipped about the whole idea, but CEO Martin Winterkorn did recently say, "it's our clear goal to continue the successful (expansion) course of past years with great dynamics and stability," which sounds an awful lot like deals are on the table to smooth the path to further growth.

Rising aluminum costs cut into Ford's profit

Wed, Jan 24 2018

When Ford reports fourth-quarter results on Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to fret that rising metals costs have cut into profits, even as rivals say they have the problem under control. Aluminum prices have risen 20 percent in the last year and nearly 11 percent since Dec. 11. Steel prices have risen just over 9 percent in the last year. Ford uses more aluminum in its vehicles than its rivals. Aluminum is lighter but far more expensive than steel, closing at $2,229 per tonne on Tuesday. U.S. steel futures closed at $677 per ton (0.91 metric tonnes). Republican U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is weighing whether to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, which could push prices even higher. Ford gave a disappointing earnings estimate for 2017 and 2018 last week, saying the higher costs for steel, aluminum and other metals, as well as currency volatility, could cost the company $1.6 billion in 2018. Ford shares took a dive after the announcement. Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told analysts at a conference in Detroit last week that while the company benefited from low commodity prices in 2016, rising steel prices were now the main cause of higher costs, followed by aluminum. Shanks said the automaker at times relies on foreign currencies as a "natural hedge" for some commodities but those are now going in the opposite direction, so they are not working. A Ford spokesman added that the automaker also uses a mix of contracts, hedges and indexed buying. Industry analysts point to the spike in aluminum versus steel prices as a plausible reason for Ford's problems, especially since it uses far more of the expensive metal than other major automakers. "When you look at Ford in the context of the other automakers, aluminum drives a lot of their volume and I think that is the cause" of their rising costs, said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at auto consultancy LMC Automotive. Other major automakers say rising commodity costs are not much of a problem. At last week's Detroit auto show, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne reiterated its earnings guidance for 2018 and held forth on a number of topics, but did not mention metals prices. General Motors Co gave a well-received profit outlook last week and did not mention the subject. "We view changes in raw material costs as something that is manageable," a GM spokesman said in an email.

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller throws hat back in ring for VW CEO job

Tue, Mar 24 2015

Toward the end of February it got leaked that Porsche CEO Matthias Muller was being promoted to Volkswagen's supervisory board. Muller's credentials and his success over 36 years at the VW Group have, for observers, put his name in the pool of potential candidates to succeed current group CEO Martin Winterkorn when Winterkorn retires in two years. But the 61-year-old Muller told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung earlier in February, "It's no solution to put a 63-year-old at the head of Volkswagen," and the statement was taken to mean he wasn't considering the job. Muller now says the quote was misunderstood. In a report in Automotive News, the newly minted board member says he was commenting on what it would mean for the supervisory board and the Group if they nominated a 63-year-old to replace a 69-year-old - that it wouldn't result in a "generation change." However, if that's what they choose to do, Muller feels great: "I stand ready to take over any assignment," he said. Muller's name re-enters the candidacy pool, but we still have no idea who leads the running for the role and Winterkorn isn't saying a word. It could be three years before we know: Winterkorn's contract concludes at the end of next year but there is speculation he'll re-up for two years to see out the end of the Strategy 2018 initiative.
