This is a 1969 Bay Window Volkswagen (Type II) Transporter Panel Delivery (whew…I think I covered all of the possible names). This VW panel delivery is not only an early bay window bus, but also a rare find in the US. Due to the lovely Chicken Tax (google it) commercial Volkswagen’s commercial vehicles are harder to find here, because they were (and still are) very expensive to import. This is registered and insured in Kansas and tags will expire in June. It has been in Volkswagen original colors Neptune Blue and Ivory White. It is customized with an Eberspacher gasoline underbody heater. The heater is in great shape but needs a fan and a glow plug replaced to be functional. Poking around I found both of these items for less than $200 combined, so if you live somewhere cold this is a must have! This van features the walk-thru front seats for easy access to the cargo hold and a standard sliding side door on the passenger side. The cargo area on the bus is great if you’re a delivery guy. The original advertisement even boasted about how this model was “All business.” If you originally purchased this bus for leisurely drives and the option for some overnight camping, you were out of luck. You get the best of both worlds when you purchase this restomodded VW panel delivery. I’ve modified the interior with passenger seating by installing a ’74 double pullout rear z bed, and also installing a ’72 dash. There is an Allison electronic ignition installed so you won’t be required to adjust the points. The engine has been replaced with a 1600CC oil cooled motor, with a 4 speed transmission, has a Weber two-staged carb, and currently less than 10,000 miles on this engine. Rear engine seals have been replaced along with the clutch. Lucky for you, this has been garage kept and maintained and boy does she shine. This is a great bus as an everyday driver and starts right up with a charged battery. I had planned on finishing up fully restoring it, but life happens. This bus is perfect for anyone wanting a bus to personalize, without having to put all of the work into restoring it. This bus is essentially a blank canvas ready to be made into whatever dream you have for it. The windowless panels definitely allow for some awesome paint jobs, and this bus is ready to be customized as an off-roader too, as the rear-wheel wells were customized at some point and will allow for larger/taller/wider wheels. This car made sense as a single dude…but now my rapidly expanding family requires a more modern vehicle. It may need some adjustments as it has only been driven once or twice a month lately, but the motor runs and the brakes stop. The rims are VW stamped standard wide 5 rims. The half-moon domes are missing, but the clips are present to make attaching them a breeze. The rear tires are Tiger Paws and the front tires are Pirelli Street tire. Both are in good condition with lightly worn tread. Original drum brakes are working fine. All lights on the vehicle work and ventilation system is in working condition as well. There is an aftermarket roof vent that was installed. This is brand-new and doesn’t leak. The body of this panel delivery is in excellent shape after all metal being restored. All necessary rust has been restored and only normal surface rust on the undercarriage is present. The front bumper was not reattached as it was too badly damaged and the wingsteps were missing. It can still be attached; you would just need to put a little more work into it. I have additional parts that I will be including with the sale as well: A Brazilian made 009 distributor complete with extra cap, points, and condenser, a rear interior spare tire cover (black plastic w/ VW logo), front VW logo is included but not attached, rear “Volkswagen” type logo included but not attached, original am/fm antenna (working), a rolling VW engine stand, extra lens covers and rings for back lights, and rings only for front lights, and a grey canvas “Rocky Mountain Motorworks Cover”. The interior is almost complete, and would just need some finishing touches to look pristine. The window seals, felts, and scrapers have all been replaced. The rear-hatch and side-door seals are in good shape. Seats up front are from a ’72 bus. They are high back bucket seats. They need new upholstery and padding, but all mechanical parts are in working condition. They currently have sheepskin covers which work great, look cool and are included with this purchase. The double rear z bed offers different seating arrangements so it can be customized to meet different needs. Concerts or campouts, this bus will get you there and back. This is a great driver and with a bit more work will be choice. Whether this bus is for you or your child as they venture out into the world, memories will be made that will last a lifetime.

Toyota reclaims global sales crown, GM and VW not far behind
Mon, 28 Jan 2013TheDetroitBureau.com reports Toyota has retaken the global sales crown. The Japanese automaker turned out 9.75 million vehicles last year, putting it just ahead of General Motors, with 9.29 million vehicles. Volkswagen, meanwhile, filled out the podium by building 9.1 million units in 2012.
Still, Toyota numbers fell just below projections the automaker made earlier in the year, due largely to a fierce territorial dispute between Japan and China that has seen mainland buyers shun Japanese goods. But the news marks a substantial comeback for Toyota. The company fell to third place in the global production race in 2011 after tragic earthquake and tsunami caused several plant closures.
In Japan, Toyota enjoyed a sales increase of 35 percent over the previous year, while the company's worldwide sales jumped by 23 percent thanks in part to new additions to the Prius line. The automaker is forecasting yet another increase for 2013, with the company projecting to reach 9.91 million units this year. Neither Volkswagen nor GM have released their own projections just yet.
A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]
Thu, Dec 18 2014Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.
Car and Driver 10Best list cracked by Tesla Model S, BMW 3 Series left off
Fri, Nov 21 2014Car and Driver is keeping new blood pumping into its annual 10Best cars list with three new entries making it on for 2015 and a perennial favorite falling off. Among the biggest shocks this year is that the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series are no longer named, despite years of some portion of that lineup earning a mention. In another surprise, the Tesla Model S (specifically in S 60 trim to fit under the $80,000 cost cap) makes it to the 2015 roster and is the only electrically motivated member of the group. Despite the loss of the 3 Series, BMW isn't entirely shut out this year, because the M235i gets its name on the list. Car and Driver argues that the little coupe feels like a welcome throwback to the E46 chassis M3 of the early 2000s. In addition to the Model S, the final newbie to the annual group is the 2015 Ford Mustang GT. The inclusion of these new members knocks the Audi A6/A7 family and Ford Fiesta ST out from the 2014 rundown. The other seven models carry over from last year, including the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Honda Accord, Mazda3, Mazda6, Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Volkswagen Golf/GTI. The 2015 10Best cars list certainly seems to have something for everyone from the hot hatch fan to the family man and even the green car driver, thanks to the addition of the Tesla. Head over to Car and Driver to read its detailed explanations for each vehicle's inclusion, but if you've got a difference of opinion or just really like the list, let us know in Comments.
