This was
Volkswagen's top-of-the-line transporter. The Deluxe was essentially a normal
Microbus with an extra window added to each side. These "hardtop" Deluxe
Microbuses are rarer than the Samba version, and are often called
"13" window buses. In the 7-passenger version, the back seat is a full bench seat, but the
front seat is a "walk-thru" configuration, and the middle seat is
only 2/3 length to allow access to the back seats, from the front seats.
My son purchased the Bus, in January of 1989 from a fellow student at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. Throughout that year he replaced the front drum brakes, brake cylinders/shoes, starter & generator, replaced front & rear bearings.
The transmission was rebuilt in 1993 by a shop in Reading, PA, don't remember the name.
In September 1993 a new 36 hp 1600 cc VW engine was installed
by Frank Hauser Foreign Car Service, Morgantown, Pa. At that time he adjusted
left front link pin, removed right front king pin assembly. Custom made king
pin bushing, machined king pin to fit bushing. Aligned front end. Van was then
flat bedded to me in Long Island, New York. The van has been insured,
registered and on the road this entire time. It has been garaged since then, as
well.
2002-New, GOODYEAR INVICTA steel belted radials. 2003-Replaced
front wheel cylinders. More recently New front brake shoes, New SOLEX 30 Pict carburetor, coil, new seat padding and covers.
All old original parts saved. Extra parts that go w/ the Bus: New rear brake shoes, various brake lines & tune-up parts.
~ CONDITION ~
Exterior:Original,
unrestored showing wear. Paint is chalky & panels have scratches, bumps
& dents as seen in pics. All glass is good & doors open & close w/
no leaks. Rust along bottom edges. Lights, wipers & horn work. All lenses OK, trim pieces & bezels present w/ wear. New tires.
Interior:Dash in
good shape, radio & middle seat missing. Mats only in front, front seats are very nice having been redone, rear bench, so, so. Panels are fair & floors have rust & holes.
Engine/Driveline:A rebuilt
Type 3 c.1966 -1973, # T021672X was installed in 1993 @ 72716 miles (invoice
pics below), now has 74905, read 174905. Engine was adjusted & maintained
as per specs after it was installed & runs strong w/ no oil burning. Trans
rebuilt & any suspension parts replaced/rebuilt, as were the brakes. Solid
mechanically w/ no drips or leaks
Undercarriage: RUST! In this instance,
pictures do tell the story. I’m being very honest & upfront in disclosing
the Bus’s problems. It’s structurally sound although the outriggers are shot.
These as well as all VW parts can be easily sourced & welded in.
Road Test/Mechanically:The videos coupled w/ a current New York Inspection
demonstrate & validate its roadworthiness. It drives & handles very
nicely, capable of being driven anytime, anywhere.
SUMMARY
This is a Classic 13 Window VW Bus that I regret selling, but need the room
& must downsize. I’m sure a lot of you have had similar situations where
you have the best intentions to do a full resto, but over time priorities
change & the time & effort dissipate. These 13 Window Buses w/ the "Split-Window" are rare & are a real part of history. Ones in no problem condition exceed $30K as I'm sure you know, & of course Show Quality ones have reached six figures.
Even comes with a
Grateful Dead window sticker. Far Out!

Volkswagen brought an angular, bulldog-like small crossover concept called Taigun to the São Paulo motor show last year, claiming that it wanted to gauge interest in the design before making a decision about production. If a new report with alleged leaked patent images is to be believed, then, interest must have been pretty high. China's Auto.Sohu.com has published this group of Taigun images, claiming that they have been sourced from the Chinese patent office and that the subcompact VW utility based on the Up! has been cleared for production. If all of that is true, and if these images are representative of the final product, you'll see that designers haven't done much to alter the concept car's appearance. Comparing, shot for shot, with the images we have from Brazil, we see that even small details like roof rack-mounted lights and exhaust tips integrated in the rear fascia have been carried over. Take a closer look for yourself in the attached galleries.
Volkswagen showed six conceptual takes on its Up at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of those being the Up Buggy. Although few will probably remember it, VW has not forgotten it, applying for a patent for the Meyers Manx revival roadster way back in March 2012 and being approved in June of this year, according to a report in Autocar. That will give the automaker a 14-year lock on the design while it decides whether to move forward with a reboot of its past. A patent doesn't mean the Up Buggy will ever move beyond the sheet-of-paper stage, but Autocar says VW is studying the market to see if a production version is feasible. We can't see North America ever getting it, but even so, we wouldn't complain if they made it - especially if they put an exposed engine in back that was set off by 18-inch-long twin tailpipes jutting straight up into the air. However, for a company that aims to be the world's number-one automaker by 2018, a niche vehicle for its mass-market brand would be a surprising use of resources.
With just about everything getting super-sized for China, Volkswagen is following suit with its plug-in vehicle plans for the world's most populous country. VW, Europe's largest carmaker, is looking to sell more than 20 different plug-in models in China within the next four years, Reuters says, citing comments Volkswagen Group China head Jochem Heizmann made in Shanghai. The company is hoping that translates to sales of more than 100,000 plug-ins in China by the end of the decade. Go big or go home, right? There's a huge plug-in vehicle opportunity in China, especially given the bad pollution situation in cities like Beijing and Shanghai and the Chinese government's incentives for plug-in vehicle buyers. Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said at the Beijing Motor Show this spring that the company would spend $25 billion on at least a half-dozen plug-in models for China by 2018. VW will start selling the e-Golf in China this year and the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid in 2015. VW said in August that it would start selling the e-Golf in the US for about $35,500 in November. That's a $6,500 price hike from the base Nissan Leaf.
