Uber Cool New Beetle....

Here's a super nice new beetle that I recently completed. I bought this car in late 2013 with a plan. The plan was to take a totally stock green beetle and with a few minor changes, create a one of a kind custom beetle. Although I wanted this car to stand out from the sea of other beetles out there, I still wanted it to look as if it could have come from the factory that way when it was done.... When I bought this car it was completely stock and in very good condition. It has a super clean Carfax, with no accident history and below average mileage for it's year. Note: There is a reserve on this car, but don't be afraid to bid because it is very reasonable. I need to sell this car so I can move on to my next project.

As you can see from the pictures the car is stunning. This is the opposite from what you usually see on eBay. Usually the car looks better in the pictures then in person. This car actually looks better in person then in the pictures! It absolutely "Pops!" in the sunlight. The paint is a single stage Urethane. It is a metallic dark green with a metallic black roof. The paint was applied in February of 2014, and has a 3 year warrantee on it. The car did not require any bodywork prior to painting, and it was still wearing it's original paint prior to this paint job. The wheels are brand new Drag 17x7 with brand new Milestar Sport tires sized 225/45/17. It has brand new 1.25" lowering springs on it that combined with the black roof really lower the profile of the car. People can't believe this car is a '99, as it looks so current. I've been stopped in parking lots to talk about the car and for people to take pictures of it. I regularly get questioned by people next to me at traffic lights. More then once people click pictures of it as we pass on the road. It gets a lot of good attention, people know it's different, but not why it's different, so they have to ask.

The car drives very well, stops well with it's 4 wheel disk brakes. Goes well with it's 2.0 four cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission. Clutch operation is nice, light and smooth with no slipping. I average an honest 30mpg with this during my 35 mile daily commute. Mechanically the car is completely stock apart from the lowering springs. No silly intakes, no silly exhausts, no tacky gizmos. This car is just the way VW intended it to be, quiet, safe and reliable, but looks oh so cool... Hence the name "Uber Cool".

The interior is totally stock and in very good shape for it's age. Remember, I started with a good car to begin with. It does suffer from the usual beetle door panel material droop. There is also some splitting on the drivers side bolster where the driver enters and exits the car. The factory stereo works, and has the stock 6 disk CD changer in the trunk that also works. All gauges work great, with no problematic warning lights showing.

During my ownership the car has had the following brand new parts:

Starter

Catalytic converter

A-arms with bushings

Ball joints

Struts

Springs

Wheels

Tires

Paint

Wiper blades and various service items.

The car comes with it's original owners manual, two sets of keys, and a clean Florida title. Being a '99 though, it's not a brand new car (but it sure looks like one..). The thing that could use immediate attention is the Air Conditioning. It's never worked during my ownership. I would expect at a minimum it needs a compressor, expansion valve, etc. I'm selling it with non-working A/C. All aspects of the HVAC work (Fan, heat, defrost, vents, etc) except the A/C. Heated rear window works great too..

The last two pictures of the car are the rendering I did of it prior to beginning the work, and also a picture of the car as purchased on December 8th 2013, before work began on it.

Any questions, please email me. High bidder can fly in and drive it home. I'll be happy to meet someone at SRQ (Sarasota) airport. Local bidders are welcome to view the car in person. Payment in cash is preferred. Car must be collected and paid for within 10 calendar cays of auctions end.

Volkswagen finds CO2 'irregularities' for 800k vehicles

Wed, Nov 4 2015

The latest issue for Volkswagen affects another 800,000 vehicles, and this time its for irregularities in CO2 emissions certifications. VW estimates this issue could cost the company $2.2 billion to fix. The company officially makes no specific mention of which engines are covered, the models they are in, or even where they are located. VW discovered the situation during its ongoing internal investigation, and, according to the automaker, "it was established that the CO2 levels and thus the fuel consumption figures for some models were set too low during the CO2 certification process." Most of the affected vehicles are diesels, and the company is now reaching out to "the responsible type approval agencies" to figure out the next step. While VW isn't officially confirming which models and engines are involved, Automotive News reports that it affects some 2012 and later VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda models with the company's 1.4-, 1.6-, and 2.0-liter diesel engines, as well as the 1.4-liter ACT gasoline engine. The issue mainly affects vehicles sold in Europe. "The Board of Management of Volkswagen AG deeply regrets this situation and wishes to underscore its determination to systematically continue along the present path of clarification and transparency," CEO Matthias Muller said in the announcement. Volkswagen Group of America spokesperson Jeannine Ginivan was able to provide some further clarification to Autoblog. "This is not related to US-certified vehicles," she said. Clarification moving forward: internal investigations at Volkswagen identify irregularities in CO2 levels Matthias Muller: "Relentless and comprehensive clarification is our only alternative." Around 800,000 Group vehicles could be affected Initial estimate puts economic risks at approximately 2 billion euros The Volkswagen Group is moving forward with the clarification of the diesel issue: during the course of internal investigations irregularities were found when determining type approval CO2 levels. Based on present knowledge around 800,000 vehicles from the Volkswagen Group could be affected. An initial estimate puts the economic risks at approximately two billion euros. The Board of Management of Volkswagen AG will immediately start a dialog with the responsible type approval agencies regarding the consequences of these findings. This should lead to a reliable assessment of the legal, and the subsequent economic consequences of this not yet fully explained issue.

Compact SUV Comparison: Specs, pics and reviews of every brand's crossover

Wed, Jul 25 2018

Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV4. Chevy Equinox vs Ford Escape. Mazda CX-5 vs Subaru Forester. Whichever combinations of compact crossover SUV you're considering, there's probably a comparison test or chart out there to read. Heck, you can even create a three-car comparison yourself here at Autoblog. However, if you want a bunch of that information all in one convenient place, well, here it is. Our mega comparison of specs, features and photos of compact SUV entries from every mainstream manufacturer that sells them. That includes the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, 2018 Ford Escape, 2018 GMC Terrain, 2018 Honda CR-V, 2018 Hyundai Tucson, 2019 Jeep Cherokee (it's already on sale with notable changes from 2018), 2018 Jeep Compass, 2018 Kia Sportage, 2018 Mazda CX-5, 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (none of Mitsu's SUVs are perfect fits for this segment, so we deemed the MEC the most competitive fit), 2018 Nissan Rogue, 2018 Subaru Forester, 2018 Toyota RAV4 and 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. We can update this comparison as more information about 2019 models is released, most notably the Forester and RAV4. Now, there are certainly some models that are smaller (Nissan Rogue Sport) or larger (Kia Sorento) that could also be considered, but we figured it was wise to stick with those in this sweet spot of comparable size and price. We also included links to Autoblog reviews, buying guides and smaller comparisons. Engines and Transmissions With rare exception, this segment features four-cylinder power. Sometimes it's turbocharged, often its not, but standard engine outputs are generally in the same ballpark. Therefore, we'd recommend focusing on torque output, as it's what will make a difference around town or when passing, and weighing that versus fuel economy (the Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 make particularly strong cases in this regard). Many drivers aren't too fond of continuously variable transmissions (CVT), either, so that's another thing to consider and note during a test drive. As you can see, several models are available with performance upgrades. Besides the Jeep Cherokee's available V6, all are more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The exception to this would be the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, as their 1.5-liter turbo engines don't prioritize performance. Instead, they serve as overall upgrades to the base naturally aspirated engines standard on only their base trim levels (CR-V LX and Escape S).

VW delivers first XL1 in Germany

Mon, Jun 9 2014

Volkswagen has delivered the first XL1 diesel plug-in hybrid to a customer from Berlin, Germany. Dr. Christian Malorny received his Oryx White XL1 with black and grey interior from Volkswagen Germany's director of sales and marketing for passenger cars, Thomas Zahn, at the company's Transparent Factory in Dresden. The super-efficient XL1, which first debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, is powered by a 0.8-liter, two-cylinder TDI engine and electric motor, with electricity supplied by a 5.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission. With a curb weight of 1,753 pounds and a drag coefficient of just 0.189, the XL1 is rated at 261 miles per gallon on the lenient European cycle. It is capable of traveling solely on electric power for up to 31 miles. "The XL1 has inspired me from the beginning and I am very pleased to now be driving my own," said Malorny, (translated). "With its visionary design and high-tech appearance, Volkswagen has dared something new and innovative." The futuristic XL1 seats two passengers, and can carry 4.2 cubic feet of cargo. It features a carbon fiber reinforced plastic body, and a low center of gravity. It is diminutive of stature, as you can see in the photo, measuring 153.1 inches long, 65.6 inches wide, and just 45.4 inches tall. It is being billed as the world's most efficient production car, but it's unlikely Dr. Malorny will be making his money back on fuel savings any time soon; despite the first sale and the vehicles appearing on the German VW site, Volkswagen has not officially announced the price tag for the XL1. In the past, we've heard it will cost approximately $145,000. Only 250 are being produced. Check out our drive review of the Volkswagen XL1 here or read on for more information in the Google-translated press release, below.
