Being offered is our 1972 Volkswagen Beetle convertible in original, beautiful condition. It has never been restored, instead, it has always been garaged and lovingly maintained by an adult; when something needed to be replaced, it was replaced. We purchased the car a few years ago from a long-time owner and have put less than 100 miles on it since (we had a baby). The 4 speed transaxle, clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearings have less that 100 miles on them and was professionally done at a reputable European car shop near us in northern New Jersey. The top (insulated with headliner) was recently replaced, the front seats were recovered with original type, black vinyl, supports and cushions. Everything operates properly, all gauges work, the dash lights, even the interior light illuminates when you open the door. You can tell the car has been adult maintained as it was never ordered with a radio when new and remains that way – although in 1972, all VW’s came standard with an antenna should you wish to install one yourself. It had a repaint of its original Yellow color approximately 10 years ago and it still looks fantastic, there are no dents or dings in the paint and it shines beautifully. There is a slight crimp in the passenger’s side running board which may be decades old, please see the photo - it is simple and inexpensive to fix should you choose to. The car runs and drives extremely well and we would not hesitate to drive it anywhere. It still wears the original sized radial tires on its original rims and retains the original oil-bathed air cleaner and stock ‘pea-shooter’ exhaust. Try finding a Beetle that original! It easily passed the difficult emissions test for New Jersey and naturally is eligible for ‘Historic’ plates in any state. The engine was rebuilt approx 19K miles ago and a thick folder of receipts and service records accompanies the vehicle. We wish we drove the car more than we did. It needs nothing that we are aware of, runs and looks correct, smells clean, looks happy and is ready for its new home. Please reach out if you have specific questions or would like a specific photo. Thanks very much and good luck! Cheers~

VW agrees to halt next-gen rally car development to help others stay in WRC

Sat, 22 Jun 2013

Volkswagen has petitioned the FIA to hold on to the current specifications for cars in the World Rally Championship, according to Autosport.com. The move is evidently an effort to keep as many competitors in the sport as possible, despite the fact that using the current spec racers may actually hurt Volkswagen's chances at winning. The three factory teams currently competing in the WRC are at the end of a three-year homologation cycle at the end of 2013, and new cars are expected to bow next year. But developing new racers could cost as much as $4.7 million.
That price tag would put M-Sport (which fields Ford racers) out of the WRC game for 2014 and would put Citroën participation in question as well. VW has already begun work on the next iteration of its Polo R WRC, and the hatch has nabbed four wins in six rounds this season. Now it appears that car won't bow until at least 2015. The FIA has officially agreed to freeze homologation of new WRC cars until the end of next season.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.

VW Golf Sportsvan succeeds Golf Plus in Frankfurt

Sun, 08 Sep 2013

Just ahead of this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen has announced the world premiere of its Golf Sportsvan, a near-production concept that succeeds its Golf Plus. VW describes this compact family car as "one of the most versatile vehicles of the compact class," noting that it offers a mix of hatchback and minivan features in a sporty package.
That sportiness comes from the Sportsvan's styling (perhaps more sleek wagon than minivan) and performance features it shares with the Golf GTI - including the XDS+ electronic differential lock, which is integrated into the Electronic Stability Control system to improve agility. At the same time, the Sportsvan's six engine options, which include a turbodiesel, are up to 19-percent more fuel-efficient than their predecessors.
