I'm listing this car to help out some friends in a jam. They took this VW Beetle convertible as a trade from an older lady who owed them money but couldn't pay them back. She bought the car a few years ago and fell on hard times and decided to give up the Beetle. These folks don't want the car and need the money for the holidays, so they asked me to help them sell it since I'm their go-to car guy. I don't know a lot about Beetles, but I know rust is the enemy and this one looks very, very clean. The underside appears to have been undercoated a long time ago but it's not too heavy so you can see the original pans are in good shape with no rust. The box sections that run under the doors are also very good and have no signs of rust or rot. Doors open and close easily without slamming, so the tub is very, very solid. Body looks good, even up close, and I don't see any signs of rust or bondo. I don't think that's original paint, since there's some overspray in a few places, but it looks good and professionally done. The color is more of a teal or turquoise than the blue shown in the photos. I don't know how to fix the pictures to make the color come out right, but there's a bit more green in it than the photos show. I think it looks good and has a bright summertime look that suits the Bug just fine, especially with the white top. One of the taillights is a replacement, I think, because it's more faded than the other one. A lot of the weatherstripping and rubber gaskets are new.

The interior is in good shape with carpets that were probably put in not too long ago. They look OK, but don't fit perfectly, so there are a few gaps around the shifter and emergency brake, but otherwise it looks decent. Good door panels and back seat. Nice wood trim on the dashboard. Gauges and lights all work. The radio is from a later VW of some kind and it isn't hooked up and I don't know if it works, it's just in the dash but doesn't get power. Top is in good condition with what looks like a replacement rear window that wasn't done very well, there's lots of goop around it to seal it up. Front trunk is clean with no rust and what I believe to be the original spare tire that has never been used. There's also a jack.

Engine originally had fuel injection but it was removed for a carburetor, which is a popular upgrade on these cars. Carburetor is new and it had a tune up not very long ago and you can see the new parts. No rust in engine area. Engine runs well, transmission shifts fine, brakes are OK but the pedal feels a little soft to me, but I'm not an expert, so maybe that's how they all are, I can't say for sure. There's a nice white boot for the top when it's down. I don't know if the mileage is accurate, but I wouldn't be surprised. This is a clean Beetle.

Known issues:

Brake light stays on because the emergency brake lever doesn't sit all the way down on the floor. I think there's some carpet bunched up under it that keeps it from going all the way down. You can press it down lightly with your hand and the light goes off. It doesn't affect the brakes.

Radio does not work.

Seat belts are all tangled up and may not work. I didn't try to sort them out. They're all still there and in good shape, just tangled up.

A few drips of oil under the car after it is parked for a long time. Nothing serious, but a few drips. What old car doesn't have drips, though?

Passenger seat feels loose. I think it's the adjuster mechanism and I'll try to fix it before it sells. Not a big deal, but that seems like a safety thing.

The reserve is set at the amount of money these folks need to be 100% again, and the buy it now adds a little bit extra for the holidays for them. They don't have a lot, they were just trying to help their friend. This is a really solid, clean Beetle that just needs some TLC to be a great summertime car. I like the colors, they match the happy little car and I know parts are insanely cheap so it will be easy to fix it up to make it perfect for not a lot of money. I think this is very reasonably priced for what it is and you don't have to worry about fixing a rust bucket or rebuilding an engine. It's nicer than you expect for the price. Car has good title.

Contact me through eBay if you have questions or want to come inspect it or have someone look at it for you. Car is available to be viewed with 24 hours notice. I will tell you everything I know about the car and can send more pictures if you want to see something specific.

2014 Volkswagen GTI to start a new hot hatch era in Geneva

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

The upcoming Geneva Motor Show is going to be stocked with important new production models and sexy concept cars, but hot hatch enthusiasts will undoubtedly see it as the coming out party of the MkVII Volkswagen GTI. And while we've only got European specifications and pricing to go on for now, we can tell from the get-go that the new GTI will be a proper heir to VW's hot hatch legacy.
This seventh-generation GTI is powered by a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in base form. For the first time ever, Volkswagen is also offering a performance pack for the GTI as well, which ups the horsepower to 230 (torque remains unchanged). With a slightly lower curb weight to push around - the new base car weighs 2,978 pounds versus 3,034 for the current three-door GTI - 0-62 miles per hour is now achieved in 6.5 seconds, and top speed is 153 mph. (Cars with the performance pack offer 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds, and a 155-mph top speed.) Buyers my choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed DSG unit.
Visually, the new GTI has obviously adopted the slant-nosed looks of the MkVII Golf, though with plenty of added drama. The exterior is dominated by the 17-inch "Brooklyn" wheels wearing 225-section rubber, and the aggressive front fascia gets black honeycombed inserts in the upper and lower grille sections. At launch, Volkswagen will offer the GTI in three colors: the Pure White seen here, Tornado Red and Black. Tartan patterned seats are of course still an option for the interior, while the GTI-specific steering wheel and shift knob are standard.

VW Beetle R is one mean bug

Wed, 02 Oct 2013

Volkswagen's R lineup currently consists of the Golf R in North America, and the too-cool-for-school Scirocco R in Europe. It hasn't exactly been a secret as to which VW would next get the R treatment; the German manufacturer reportedly confirmed that a hotter Beetle would be coming to the US. That announcement, in August 2011, was followed up by a production-ready Beetle R Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
After some wait, we're finally seeing spy shots of the Beetle R in Germany. The mule shown in the images here is wearing the R-Line bodykit, which adds sportier front and rear fascias, side skirts, dual exhausts and a not-so-subtle spoiler. Topped off with Volkswagen's traditional, five-spoke R wheels, we'd be just fine with the Beetle R coming to market as is.
Our spy photographer, though, seems to think that the production R will get even sportier sheetmetal, which we take to mean the more assertive look shown on the Frankfurt show car. Larger intakes on the front fascia, a bigger rear spoiler and vertical vents on the rear bumper could all be upcoming. Whether a production model will include the concept's polished wheels (R cars haven't traditionally embraced that look), vented hood and the quad-tipped exhausts remains to be seen.

Volkswagen might cut 40 models across brands to save cash

Mon, Jun 20 2016

Volkswagen once set out to pass Toyota and General Motors and become the largest automaker in the world. Following months of fallout from the diesel emissions scandal, the manufacturer is rumored to be dropping around 40 models from its company-wide lineup. According to German business and finance publication Handelsblatt, the Volkswagen Group is looking to slim down and remove a number of low-volume vehicles from various lineups. The company currently sells around 340 models across brands that include Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley. Volkswagen is refusing to comment, but Handelsblatt claims to have sources within the company. Last week, Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Muller announced a new strategy for the company that includes a major focus on electric vehicles and new technology services. During his announcement, Muller said the company would be cutting a number of models, but at the time no numbers, models, or brands were discussed. Despite comments to the contrary, rumors have persisted since late last year that Volkswagen was looking to sell commercial truck and bus manufacturer MAN. Volkswagen owns truck and bus manufacturer Scania, so even if it dropped MAN, the company would still have a foothold within the bus and truck market. There is also talk of the company selling Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati, which Volkswagen acquired via Audi in 2012. The company's image has taken a huge hit in the wake of the diesel scandal. Volkswagen has set aside cash in order to pay fines and may be looking to sell these several subsidiaries and cut low-volume models in order offset the costs. Despite the scandal, the company led worldwide sales in the first quarter of 2016. The same was true in 2015, but sales tanked at the end of the year following the diesel revelations.
