All electric powered VW convertible! Great summer car! This was originally a Georgia car when I purchased it. Very clean floors and frame. Body was painted pearl white, and is what I'd call a so-so job. The conversion kit was purchased from Wilderness EV. If you go to their website, please look at the Kit #3. The car operates on 120V power from 10 12 volt deep cycle batteries. It is SO quiet compared to the original motor/drivetrain! You can hear the 40 year old squeaks and rattles, but not the motor! Incredibly quiet for an air-cooled VW! The stock 4 speed transmission is present, although the electric conversion operates without the need for a clutch. Simply put it in 2nd or 3rd gear and pull away like an automatic. When you stop at a light, you can leave it in gear as electric motors don't "idle".
The kit and batteries all are about a year old, and have less than 1000 miles on them. When I bought the car, it needed brakes and many exterior parts like lenses and trim rings. These were all put on also about a year ago. There are many other parts not yet installed including the fender beading and rear license light. Although the top is nearly new and in excellent condition, there is little to no original rubber on either the top or windows. If you plan to drive in the rain these should be added! My plan was to drive in the summer and on nice days so these items were low priority. Brakes are new as I said, but aren't very powerful stopping the increased weight with 10 batteries. Another plan of mine was to convert the front brakes to disc to help stopping power.
Although this was a fun project, and is a successful driver, the hilly area where I live in Cincinnati limits my practical range to about 30 miles. On the flat, under 40-45 miles per hour, the range should be much greater. Top speed according to Wilderness EV is supposed to be 65+, but I've never driven faster than 55 because the range is greatly affected by speed. It is possible to use as a "commuter" car, not just a neighborhood electric vehicle depending on the distance and terrain for your drive. I've taken it to the golf course and back on very hilly roads, a distance of about 15 miles round trip, without any issues. If you live near work, school, etc. you can drive without using any gasoline! "Fill ups" require an overnight plug in, roughly eight hours, for a full charge. The car comes with the charger I've used in my garage to keep the batteries full.
Please ask any question you might have before bidding! This is a very cool, fun car, but is not for everyone! I'm happy to discuss any details about the car, and set up a time for you to test drive if you are local to Cincinnati. This is a no reserve sale! First bid could win the car!!
Please note, if you restore and resell vintage Beetles, that the motor and gas tank that were in the car are still available to interested parties. This conversion was done with minimal alteration of the stock vehicle, and would allow for a full restoration to a very high level if that was your desire. I would be happy to negotiate with an interested buyer who wanted to keep the motor with the car.

VW using other manufacturing locations as leverage in battle with TN [w/video]
Sat, 26 Apr 2014We've reached a new step in the ongoing drama at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, TN. The United Auto Workers recently dropped its opposition to the union vote and agreed that it wouldn't hold another ballot for at least a year. Now, the new question becomes where VW is going to build its forthcoming midsize SUV.
Earlier, it had been considered all but certain that the SUV, likely a production version of the CrossBlue concept (pictured above), would be built in Tennessee. However, it seems the Chattanooga factory might have competition to produce it. In emails obtained by The Detroit News, VW's lawyer wrote to the Tennessee economic development department in January saying, "While we understand there are some 'non-deal' issues that are causing a delay in the TN solution, VW has been successful in reaching agreement on terms at the alternative locations."
As previously reported, the state of Tennessee allegedly offered VW about $300 million in incentives to build the vehicle there and create an estimated 1,350 jobs, but it later rescinded the deal. Newly leaked documents from NewsChannel 5 (WTVF-TV) in Nashville allegedly show just how close that offer was to being completed. It appears that VW actually sent the government the first draft of a memorandum of understanding agreeing to the incentives, but the state removed the offer in late January.
VW planning 20 new plug-in models for China
Thu, Oct 30 2014With just about everything getting super-sized for China, Volkswagen is following suit with its plug-in vehicle plans for the world's most populous country. VW, Europe's largest carmaker, is looking to sell more than 20 different plug-in models in China within the next four years, Reuters says, citing comments Volkswagen Group China head Jochem Heizmann made in Shanghai. The company is hoping that translates to sales of more than 100,000 plug-ins in China by the end of the decade. Go big or go home, right? There's a huge plug-in vehicle opportunity in China, especially given the bad pollution situation in cities like Beijing and Shanghai and the Chinese government's incentives for plug-in vehicle buyers. Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said at the Beijing Motor Show this spring that the company would spend $25 billion on at least a half-dozen plug-in models for China by 2018. VW will start selling the e-Golf in China this year and the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid in 2015. VW said in August that it would start selling the e-Golf in the US for about $35,500 in November. That's a $6,500 price hike from the base Nissan Leaf.
VW recalling 2.64M vehicles worldwide over engine, light issues
Thu, 14 Nov 2013Volkswagen is staging a massive, worldwide recall that's already grown from 1.68 million to 2.64 million vehicles and covers three different issues across a number of vehicles. We already reported on 61,000 Tiguans getting recalled over lighting issues - that was just in the US. Globally, however, VW will be recalling 800,000 Tiguans, according to Automotive News, with the focus on CUVs built between 2008 and 2011. The issue with the Tiguan relates to a simple fuse swap, so this is rather unremarkable, aside from the sheer number of vehicles being fixed. The real, troubling issues relate to gearboxes and pickups.
239,000 Amarok pickups (pictured right) are being recalled over fuel leaks, while 1.6 million vehicles are being recalled to swap the synthetic oil in dual-clutch transmissions with mineral oil. Now, the transmission issue is one for the global Volkswagen Group to address, not just the VW brand - vehicles from Audi, Škoda and Seat use the same seven-speed DSG and are covered under the recall, as well.
Why the switch from synthetic to mineral oil? Apparently, using the synthetic oil in a DSG and then subjecting it to stop-and-go conditions or heavy loads in a hot and humid climate can lead to electronic malfunctions, according to a Volkswagen press release. The switch, from the sounds of it, is largely a preventative measure.
