This car is my daily driver, so it’s not perfect, but it’s solid, reliable, wonderful, and gets compliments wherever it goes.
This beetle has been an evolving project over the last 5 years, and I’ll list all of the mods that I can remember, in rough chronological order.
All glass removed and replaced, and all window seals replaced with new rubber.
Floor and door interiors lined with Dynamat acoustic absorption material. These first two mods give the car a feel that is solid as a bank vault.
2.5” dropped front spindle. It’s not a lowrider, but it is a low-er rider than stock, and the stance looks really good.
New seat covers on front and rear seats.
New carpet
Converted to 12v sysyem with 12 v generator
Found an original Motorola radio and installed it, but it is just for looks.
New brakes, wheels cylinders, and master cylinders
New wheel bearings
Added 3 point safety belts to the front seats, and lap belts for the rear passengers.
New tires- now Good tires (estimated 10k miles) on stock steel wheels with baby moon hubcaps, I also have a spare wheel and two extra tires.
I ran it like this for about 3 years, with the 100% original single port 40hp motor but last year, made the following changes:
Installed a rebuilt 1600 dual port motor, clearancing the original transaxle to fit the larger flywheel.
Installed a new set of Weber 34ICT dual carbs. The carburation is much more precise now, and it has a considerable amount more power.
Installed 4 into 1 tuned header system with a single quiet pack muffler (sounds awesome, but not too loud)
Installed new Pertronix electronic ignition and distributor.
New coil and plug wires (not yellow!)
New mechanical fuel pump
Installed more modern 12 v alternator
New battery
This car is Faded Glory White. The bodywork on this car is_mostly_original, but does have a bit of mix-n-match going on. I had a very minor fender bender involving rainy, oily roads and hit a jeep at about 10mph. As a result, I replaced the front hood with a used one from austin Veedub, and ordered a repop front right fender. I have haven't painted either of them, so the hood is a different shade of white and the fender is primer grey. I just figured that the mix-n-match pieces were part of the car’s story, and left them as-is.
The car is mostly rust-free, although there is the typical rusty patch directly under the battery. This section has been repaired, but it’s the only real rust that I’m aware of.
This car has an interesting history, and I have all of the original paperwork from the original sale. it was purchased brand new in 1963, and the buyer ( a UT Professor) drove to Houston to pick up the car right off the boat. He drove it for 40+ years until he sold it to local Austin VW legend David Crow. David installed the dropped spindle, dynomat, and window rubber, then lost interest and sold it to me. With my dad’s help, we finished it up, and I have been driving it as my sole car for the last 5 years. Now, I’m going to college in San Marcos. They are eliminating the bus route, and I really don’t want to put the highway wear and tear on the beetle, so after much soul searching, I have decided to sell my pride and joy.
I would recommend coming to see the car before purchase if possible, it is an amazing car from a different and more gentle era, making it unique on the road in many ways. Please feel free to ask questions, I love talking about this car! Buyer is responsible for arranging means of picking up. Thanks for looking!

VW teams up with legendary electronic musicians Kraftwerk for 3D Autobahn concert
Fri, Jan 9 2015Electronic music fans know Kraftwerk. To paraphrase a famous TV anchor, they're kind of a big deal. The band is in the midst of an eight-concert show at Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie, which includes a full 3D accompaniment. Why, you ask, is this on Autoblog, then? Well, Volkswagen is sponsoring it, highlighting the role that its iconic Beetle played on the band's equally iconic fourth album, Autobahn. And besides, it's Friday afternoon, and who doesn't want to listen to the soothing synth notes of early EDM pioneers? Check out the featurette on the connection between VW and Kraftwerk, and then for giggles, scroll down and give the first track of Autobahn a listen. This content is hosted by a third party. The UK votes for Brexit and it will impact automakers
Fri, Jun 24 2016It's the first morning after the United Kingdom voted for what's become known as Brexit – that is, to leave the European Union and its tariff-free internal market. Now begins a two-year process in which the UK will have to negotiate with the rest of the EU trading bloc, which is its largest export market, about many things. One of them may be tariffs, and that could severely impact any automaker that builds cars in the UK. This doesn't just mean companies that you think of as British, like Mini and Jaguar. Both of those automakers are owned by foreign companies, incidentally. Mini and Rolls-Royce are owned by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata Motors of India, and Bentley by the VW Group. Many other automakers produce cars in the UK for sale within that country and also export to the EU. Tariffs could damage the profits of each of these companies, and perhaps cause them to shift manufacturing out of the UK, significantly damaging the country's resurgent manufacturing industry. Autonews Europe dug up some interesting numbers on that last point. Nissan, the country's second-largest auto producer, builds 475k or so cars in the UK but the vast majority are sent abroad. Toyota built 190k cars last year in Britain, of which 75 percent went to the EU and just 10 percent were sold in the country. Investors are skittish at the news. The value of the pound sterling has plummeted by 8 percent as of this writing, at one point yesterday reaching levels not seen since 1985. Shares at Tata Motors, which counts Jaguar and Land Rover as bright jewels in its portfolio, were off by nearly 12 percent according to Autonews Europe. So what happens next? No one's terribly sure, although the feeling seems to be that the jilted EU will impost tariffs of up to 10 percent on UK exports. It's likely that the UK will reciprocate, and thus it'll be more expensive to buy a European-made car in the UK. Both situations will likely negatively affect the country, as both production of new cars and sales to UK consumers will both fall. Evercore Automotive Research figures the combined damage will be roughly $9b in lost profits to automakers, and an as-of-yet unquantified impact on auto production jobs. Perhaps the EU's leaders in Brussels will be in a better mood in two years, and the process won't devolve into a trade war. In the immediate wake of the Brexit vote, though, the mood is grim, the EU leadership is angry, and investors are spooked.
Recharge Wrap-up: BYD sales surge, new Mazda MX-5, plug-in VW Passat
Mon, Jul 7 2014BYD has enjoyed a tremendous leap in sales since last year, according to Want China Times. Sales from January to April were ten times that of the same period last year, with much of the credit going to government subsidies for clean cars. BYD claims, though, that battery production is limiting the number of vehicles it sells, and that by increasing that production capacity, it will see even more success. BYD's Qin plug-in hybrid, introduced in December, has already sold 4,500 units with another 8,000 orders already placed. Read more here. Mazda will reveal the fourth generation of its MX-5 roadster in September. To celebrate the car's 25th anniversary, the all-new two-seat convertible will debut during simultaneous private events in Spain, Japan and the US on September 3 and 4. Furthermore, the new Miata will be the center of a more public event in Barcelona on September 6. For fans in the US, Mazda will hold a Miatas at Mazda Raceway event from September 5 to 7. The 2016 MX-5 promises to continue to offer a lightweight, balanced design for fun and efficiency. The new Volkswagen Passat will feature a plug-in hybrid version. Volkswagen confirmed the Passat PHEV for Europe at the model's unveiling at the Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam, Germany. The plug-in Passat uses a 154-horsepower TSI engine and an 80-kilowatt electric motor for a total output of 208 horsepower. With a full charge, it can travel up to 31 miles on electricity alone. All versions of the eighth-generation Passat use stop-start and regenerative braking. Read more at Green Car Congress. BBC warns that the costs of charging an electric vehicle in the UK could surpass those of fueling a gasoline engine. Not so fast, says The Green Car Website. While the BBC cites charging services like Charge Master introducing fees for rapid charging making it cost about as much per mile to drive as traditional internal combustion engines. The Green Car Website points out that most people usually charge at home for much less, that paying for rapid charging is still not that expensive and that the BBC article misses the point about EVs, anyway.
