The RAV4 offers two different engines, an in-line four-cylinder or V6, and both are available with either front-wheel drive or on-demand four-wheel drive. The available 3.5L V6 has an impressive 269 horsepower and 246 lb-ft of torque. The powerful V6 has variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust, to help optimize torque and fuel efficiency. The V6 is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, can accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds, yet also gets an EPA fuel economy of up to 22 city, 29 highway. A 165-horsepower, 2.4L four-cylinder engine is standard on the RAV4, matched only to a four-speed automatic transmission. With the optional tow package, V6 models can tow a maximum of 3500 pounds. The available on-demand four-wheel-drive system seamlessly sends power between the front and rear wheels in the ratio needed. It also includes a locking mode for low-traction situations below 25 mph, such as through mud or deep snow. The RAV4 uses an advanced Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system instead of a hydraulic system. EPS allows more precise control, improves fuel economy, and interfaces with the standard stability control system. V6 models with third-row seating get Downhill Assist Control (DAC) and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), two electronic aids that help maintain control on steep grades, especially when in low-traction situations.Inside, the RAV4 features plenty of storage, with dual gloveboxes, a center console box, and a recessed rear compartment. The third-row seating, optional on base and Limited styles, folds completely flat into the cargo floor. On models without the optional third row of seating, there are two additional concealed compartments under the cargo area.Standard features on the base RAV4 include air conditioning, cruise control, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, and keyless entry. Equipment on the Sport model includes larger 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, fog lights, roof rails, smoked headlamp trim, and heated power mirrors. The Limited adds a number of luxury amenities such as dual-zone climate control, a six-disc in-dash CD changer, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, but brings a chrome grille and 17-inch six-spoke alloys.Options on the Limited include leather-trimmed heated seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and standout Blizzard White Pearl paint.

eBay Find of the Day: Harley-Davidson powered Toyota Prius [w/video]
Thu, 03 Apr 2014Sometimes we pluck cars from the listings of eBay Motors because they're old and interesting, some for being simply lovely, some for rarity and some for pure fun. And sometimes we pick eBay Finds of the Day, because they're hacked apart Toyota Prius' with Harley Davidson V-twin-power; concocted by the same mind that brought you innumerable Jalopnik articles and is partially responsible for the joy that is the 24 Hours of LeMons. This time it's that last one.
A fairly subtle tweet from long-time Jalop contributor and well-regarded grease monkey, Murilee Martin, hipped us to this crazy Frankenstein Prius. Built from the bones of a 2008 Toyota and the heart of a 1986 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883, the motive portmanteau is, well... it's a thing.
Toyota's advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive has been unceremoniously wrenched and snipped out of the engine bay, making room (via an artful hole in the hood) for the towering, bored out V-twin. Or, as the maestro himself puts it:
BMW tops Consumer Reports 2023 Brand Report Card
Thu, Feb 16 2023Feels like we wrote about Consumer Reports' 2022 Brand Report Car and 10 Top Picks a few weeks ago, but it was last April. So the mag is back with a ranked roster of 32 brands and 10 vehicles in four categories for your debating pleasure. Starting with the brands, last year's top three were Subaru, Mazda and BMW. This year, the Munich crew climbed two spots to win the prize thanks to "Superb road test scores and solid results in CR’s reliability and owner satisfaction surveys." Subaru narrowly fell to second, maintaining its four-year run in the top three. Mini, eighth last year, jumped five spots to get the last step on the podium. The rest of the top 10 were Lexus (up one spot from last year), Honda (down one spot from last year), Toyota (up three), Genesis (up 12), Mazda (down six), Audi (down three) and Kia (up eight). The magazine and testing outfit says its Brand Report Card "[reveals] which automakers are producing the most well-performing, safe, and reliable vehicles based on CRÂ’s independent testing and member surveys," and that "Brands that rise to the top tend to have the most consistent performance across their model lineups." Last year's top 10 had six automakers from Japan, three from Germany (giving Mini credit for England), none from the U.S. or South Korea, and five luxury brands. This year's list counts five makes from Japan, two from Germany because Porsche fell out of the top ten, two from South Korea, still none from the U.S., and four luxury brands. Buick again ranked as the best domestic, dropping to 12th after being 11th last year. The big mover was Lincoln, its 10-place jump up to 16th attributed to better reliability from the Corsair and Nautilus. Tesla's improved overall reliability saw it climb six spots to 17th. Dodge climbed one spot to 15th. Jeep got out of the penalty box in last to come second-to-last. Land Rover fell three places into the penalty spot. CR's top 10 vehicle models The 10 Top Picks list is practically a new list. Only two holdovers made it to 2023, those being the Subaru Forester and Kia Telluride.
First Toyota unintended acceleration case headed for trial
Mon, 22 Jul 2013Toyota is going to be back in the spotlight, as the first of its unintended acceleration lawsuits is headed for trial. This case covers a Los Angeles sushi shop owner, Noriko Uno. According to the what the family told The Detroit News, Uno only put about 10,000 miles on her 2006 Toyota Camry in four years. Uno was apparently afraid of high speeds, avoiding the freeway and taking a route home along LA's surface streets to avoid them.
On August 28, 2009, Uno's Camry suddenly accelerated to 100 miles per hour, eventually striking a telephone poll and a tree and killing her. The family contends that Uno attempted to step on the brakes and pull the emergency brake, neither of which brought her speed under control, while Toyota maintains that improperly installed floormats and driver error have been behind the majority of the 80 cases expected to be heard in court.
In Uno's case, The Detroit News is expecting the trial to focus on the lack of an override if the gas and brake pedals were pressed at the same time. Brake overrides were installed on Toyota's European fleet. The Uno family attorney will need to prove to the jury that it wasn't driver error that killed Noriko Uno.
