2012 Toyota Prius V Five with Advanced Technology Package (ATP)

If you don't own a business, aren't a technologist or don't have a geek streak then skip this ad. The car will seem over-priced unless you know you're driving a very limited edition "All Tech Package" ATP Prius. It's Toyota's version of the Google Car.

This is a $5,000 add-on that allows the car to park itself (parallel or back in), avoid collision using  active radar, increase milage significantly when you "let the computer drive", receive gps rerouting tips based on traffic and weather ahead (Sirius data feed).

The ATP charges and syncs your iPhone or Android, has voice calling, voice navigation and mobile apps for further control.
A high tech car is nice. A high-tech, high-touch hybrid that is constantly looking out for you is amazing. I bought this Prius with the Advanced Technology Package because I use my mobile device constantly, make and receive a lot of phone calls, wanted radar anti-collission because it's proactive, radar cruise control so that I could drive 3 hours up state always moving at the rate of traffic in the fast lane but always 3 car lengths back so I avoided tickets.

I went with the harddrive based GPS because it is so fast and so sophisticated that it politely informs you of a thunderstorm or traffic accident 20 miles ahead and asks if you would like to detour around the incident. The USB plug charges your phone, the bluetooth sync tells you who's calling as well as dial by name, all the while you're sitting in a 4 door hatchback that is reporting 99 mpg as you scream along at 75.

The published specs for mileage are the ones I use to represent this cars energy performance. But I will say that as I learned to let the ATP do more of the driving for me and as I learned which transmission settings to use when, the Prius V Five ATP with lifetime Sirius radio and digital traffic and digital weather treated me right. Oh and yes, this is the car that parallel parks itselfs in spots you wouldn't try on your own.

Passengers have plenty of leg room, their own AC vents, a giant retractable fabric sun roof that essentially transforms the car into a glass topped convertible. Awesome when in Manhattan or the mountains. The rear hatchback holds a log of groceries covered by a retractable privacy cover in case what you're toting is tall. With the passenger seats folded down there's enough room that I was able to move a furniture and bankers boxes. This great deal also comes with a set of brand new tires.

The Prius V Five ATP has a lower total cost of ownership from age 2 forward than all other competitors, which was the final reason I bought it. These were supposed to be the "I told you so" years. But I just don't use it enough and a great car needs to be driven, not stored indoors at a garage.

Tesla expects another higher-volume deal with Toyota in next few years

Tue, 09 Sep 2014

Four months have passed since Toyota ended its relationship with Tesla Motors, in which the electric-vehicle specialist supplied full lithium-ion battery packs to the Japanese behemoth for its RAV4 EV rollout, of which 2,500 vehicles will be completed. Now, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has been heard suggesting that a future collaboration is likely within the next two to three years, and that it will probably be much larger than the last one.
Both Tesla and Toyota have sung each other's praises in the not-too-distant past, Toyota telling Autoblog back in May, "We have a good relationship with Tesla and will evaluate the feasibility of working together on future projects." According to Automotive News, Musk said of the Japanese giant, "We love working with Toyota... We have a huge amount of respect for them as a company and certainly much to learn."
Interestingly, though, the two automakers have rather divergent strategies for eco-friendly automobiles. Toyota, as you're surely aware, is the clear-cut leader in hybrids and has thrown its massive support in the direction of hydrogen fuel cells, while Tesla has invested heavily in battery-electric technology and high-speed charging stations.

Recharge Wrap-up: New and old Audis get greener, as does US electricity

Thu, Aug 21 2014

Audi has made environmental improvements to the its TT while boosting performance. The new TT sees an 11-percent reduction in emissions, and up to 14 percent more power. Audi says that each TT will save around 5.5 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions over its lifecycle. Additionally, the TT's manufacturing process has been cleaned up a bit, reducing emissions by about nine percent. Read more in the press release, below, or see Audi's lifecycle assessment here. Speaking of greening up Audis, Al Swackhammer of Washington converted his 1960 Audi DKW 1000S to run on electric power. Swackhammer first fell in love with the Audi Ur-Quattro, became an enthusiast of Audi and Volkswagen cars, and has owned nothing else ever since. With his DKW, he combined his passion for the classic car with his responsibility to the environment. "I am pleased that I did this project," says the happy owner, "and I enjoy driving it very dearly." Meet the man and his beloved electric Audi DKW in the video below. Toyota has chosen a sustainable design firm, Corgan, as the lead architect for its new North American headquarters. The new campus will be built in Plano, TX, and will be the workplace of about 4,000 Toyota employees. Corgan, who has already done 47 LEED certified projects, is already designing a temporary office for the site while it finishes the project. Toyota expects to begin working from the site in late 2016 or early 2017. Learn more in the press release below. In July, all new electrical generating capacity in the US came from renewable sources. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Office of Energy Projects' newest "Energy Infrastructure Update" report says new electric generation put into service last month came from wind (379 megawatts), solar (21 megawatts) and hydro (5 megawatts). So far this year, 53 percent of new energy generation capacity has come from various renewable sources, and none from coal or nuclear. Currently, renewable energy accounts for 16.3 percent of the US electric generation capacity, providing about 14 percent of actual electricity. Toyota to sell hot-pink Crown in Japan

Sun, 11 Aug 2013

Akio Toyoda is doing a pretty decent job at the helm of the Toyota empire. This is the man, after all, that declared that Toyota would get new sports cars, and that they needed to be, not should be, rear-wheel drive. We can respect that. Toyoda is also trying to do away with his company's conservative styling and bring edgier vehicles to market.
Toyota's designers have done just that, although perhaps they went a bit too far. In November, Toyota debuted its fourteenth-generation Crown with a bling-bling fascia that makes Lexus' spindle grille look as conservative as a three-piece suit, and a retina-searing pink paintjob. See, in Japan, the Crown is to Japan's older crowd what the 2002 Buick Park Avenue is to America's senior citizens. As Automotive News reports, the idea with the pink was to draw attention to the grille, but it was originally intended as a debut item, only.
Now, Toyota is actually planning to offer the electric fuchsia Crown for sale to regular buyers. Interested parties will have from September 1st to September 30th to place an order for the big sedan. According to the AN report, Toyoda said to reporters at the debut, "My initial reaction was: 'You're kidding! Please, not pink." We wish they were kidding.
