You are bidding on a 2001 hybrid prius.  If you know about these cars then the first thing you will be asking is about the HV battery; yes it has a rebuilt battery in it.

Here is everything I know about the car.  I bought it from a friend who's wife was the 2nd owner.  I bought it at 125k miles and the HV battery was going bad.  I actually picked it up from the dealer the 2nd time they looked at it and told him that the new battery would be 4k to buy and install.  I bought the car and then bought gen 2 battery modules from a guy on ebay who rebuilds packs from salvaged gen2 prii.  He told me he pulled the modules from a 60k mi and a 50k mi prius.  I'm an electrical engineer and I checked and replaced all the modules in the pack.  It has been perfect since then, I have never had any service codes set that indicate the battery has any problems.  This car is in great shape for how old it is.  My wife has been driving it now for over 3 years and my family is outgrowing it.  It does have a few small issues that I would say are expected from a car this old.

Here are the issues I'm aware of in order of importance:
1: Right after you start the car it will occasionally die (the ICE).  It does this worse when it's very cold outside.  When it does this it sets code P3191.  I have troubleshot this problem several times and it is very consistent.  The engine dies exactly the same every time it happens (approx 6sec after started).  It has been doing this now for over a year and it's not big enough of a deal to do anything about.  My wife has noticed that if she turns the A/C or Heater off before she starts the car that reduces the probability that it will happen.  When it happens you simply turn off the car, turn it back on and everything is fine.  I have read many forums, replaced the MAF sensor, tried a few other things and have come to the conclusion that the engine ECU is causing this.  Forums say the ECU's have a problem and need replaced with a .......54 model or something.  Anyway, the ECU is in my opinion too expensive relative to the value of the car at this point.  And only having to turn the car off and back on occasionally isn't that big of a deal.

2: There is some body damage to the back left bottom of the car.  It isn't too bad and it's the only body damage that isn't perfectly normal for a car of this age.  Other than that the body is in great shape with just very minor dents and scratches.  See pictures of this.

3: The LCD touchscreen has faded spots in it like it has had sun damage or something, but it still functions perfectly, you can read everything on it and the touchscreen works good

4: The door switches lock/unlock and window up/down switches have seen better days.  Some of them are popping out or very loose, but wait............ they all still work ok, you just have to treat them with some TLC :))

5: In the last 6 months I have seen a code set for power steering.  I can't remember the code, but I've read in forums that there are two position sensors in the power steering rack that sense position and as one/both of them wear out they don't agree and it sets a check engine code.  This hasn't affected anything, I just figure one of the sensors is starting to go bad.  Again one of those problems that isn't worth addressing b/c it's not a bad enough problem :))

Other than those things listed above, the car is in great working order.   The A/C is good and cold, the tires are good, the interior is good (for it's age).  My wife has and is currently driving this car every day.  I'll be perfectly honest, no BS, this car could drive perfectly as-is for years to come,,, or it could develop a problem tomorrow.  As with any used car there are no guarantees :((  But, great news.  Coming with this car is a wrecked 2001 prius.  Two for one, just in time for 4th of July :))    It's the exact same car as mine (different color).  A colleague of mine bought this car brand new (he claims it was the first prius in Tulsa :))  at 70kmi it was wrecked an he bought it from the insurance company in hopes of some day building something cool out of it (he is also an electrical engineer).  He heard I was selling mine and we got to talking, we thought that his wrecked car would make a great compliment to my running car.  We figured someone who is buying this car is probably someone who is a good mechanic and/or likes tinkering with these things like us.  So, you can see from the pics that the car was damaged on the front drivers side.  We think the inverter and engine are not hurt, they have been sitting un-used for 8yrs now, so no guarantees.  The rest of the car is in great condition.  All the interior is near perfect condition, LCD, Door switches, etc,  The battery was removed long ago so it does not come with the car.  We can discuss shipping of the parts car after the auction is over, but I will entertain delivering at least part way for cost.  I love road trips.

Feel free to ask me any questions you like, I'll answer them the best I can.

Thanks,
Zach

Recharge Wrap-up: Toyota Prius airbag recall, Peugeot launches eU01s e-bike

Fri, Sep 16 2016

Toyota is recalling 7,600 Prius vehicles for an airbag issue. Certain examples of the 2016 Prius could have malfunctioning inflators that could cause the passenger side airbags to deploy accidentally. There are no known injuries from the faulty airbags, but Toyota says, "This has been observed when the vehicle is parked and unoccupied for a period of time." Toyota also says this issue is unrelated to the massive recall of airbags supplied by Takata. The automaker will contact affected owners to arrange free repairs. Read more at Automotive News. Peugeot is adding another e-bike to its portfolio with the eU01s. What sets this electrically assisted bicycle apart from both regular bikes and other pedelecs is its ability to propel the bike to 28 mph under electric power. It comes with either a 400- or 500-Wh lithium-ion battery, providing 47 or 59 miles of range, respectively. It also offers an optional on-board computer with its 4.3-inch screen, through which riders can customize the electric assistance, get directions, receive sports coaching, and connect their smartphone. Earlier this year, Peugeot also launched its e-Kick scooter and folding eF01 e-bike. Read more at Green Car Congress. BYD is expanding its manufacturing facility in the US. In the second of three phases for the plant, BYD is adding onto its factory in Lancaster, California, where it currently builds electric buses. The Chinese company plans to triple the number of employees, up from the current 400, as it expands the facility by 40,000 square feet. BYD plans to build medium- and heavy-duty trucks at the plant, but declined to comment on whether it has plans to build light-duty vehicles there. Read more at Automotive News. The German states of Hesse and Baden-Wuerttemberg are suing Volkswagen over the Dieselgate scandal. The states are joining other investors seeking damages over losses incurred because of the automaker's emissions cheat device. Hesse Finance Minister Thomas Schaefer said the scandal cost the state about $4.4 million in stock losses, while Baden-Wuerttemberg likely lost closer to $450,000. Bavaria said earlier that it would sue Volkswagen on behalf of its pension fund for civil servants, which lost around $780,000. Read more from Automotive News Europe.

Cheap, honest transportation | 2017 Toyota Yaris iA

Fri, Mar 24 2017

In The Love Bug, the main character (aside from Herbie) is a down-on-his-luck racing driver named Jim Douglas. Early on, he steps into an exotic car show room, and when the dealer asks him kind of car he's looking for, Douglas replies, "What do you have in the way of cheap, honest transportation?" The dealer quickly snatches his fancy liquor back from Douglas and soon after Herbie shows up from the back of the showroom. But if this happened today, you could easily replace the classic Beetle with a 2017 Toyota Yaris iA. The poor thing isn't nearly as endearing to look at as a classic Bug, as a result of the rather unattractive nose, and it's now using a second pseudonym (first Scion iA, then Toyota Yaris iA) to hide its Mazda heritage. However, everything else about it nails the description of cheap, honest transportation. And for that reason, it's a lovely little car. Let's start with honesty, and it begins from the minute you start equipping the car – the iA is a "what you see is what you get" proposition. You see, the iA moniker isn't the only holdover from the Scion era. The Toyota Yaris iA retains its "monospec" configuration, which means it comes with only one option: the transmission. Customers can choose from either a 6-speed manual like our test car, or a 6-speed automatic which costs $1,100. Everything else is standard, and "everything" includes some choice features. You get alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, USB and Bluetooth integration, a rear-view camera, tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, and keyless entry with push-button start. Technically there are a number of dealer-installed accessories too, including your typical fare of mudguards, rear spoiler, cargo organizers, and such. However, none of them are really necessary, with one exception. For some odd reason, the Yaris iA does not come with a center armrest. It's a $195 accessory, and frankly it should be a standard feature because it's so useful. If you hadn't guessed, ours wasn't equipped with it. Everywhere else the iA is a thoroughly pleasant car, if not as sporty as the old Mazda2. The little 1.5-liter four-cylinder under the hood isn't particularly potent with 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque. But with a Miata-like 2,385-pound curb weight and our car's manual transmission, it manages to feel fairly sprightly, and never has any trouble dicing it up with traffic. That transmission is pretty decent, too.

North American production of foreign marques to jump in 2014

Sun, 23 Dec 2012

Wards Auto has released its North American Light Vehicle Production Forecast for 2014, and the report predicts foreign manufacturers will increase production on the continent some 3.9 percent by 2014. If accurate, that should see 123,000 additional cars, trucks and vans produced in North America, swelling the total number of units produced both by domestic and foreign manufacturers to 16.9 million light vehicles from a projected 15.6 million in 2013. Much of the increase can be attributed to the fact that Toyota intends to produce another car at its Blue Springs, MS plant as well as a new Lexus model at its Georgetown, KY facility in a year's time.
Likewise, Volkswagen intends to move production of a currently imported model to its plant in Puebla, Mexico. Daimler, Honda, Nissan and Mazda also plan to build additional models on North American soil for the first time. Around two-thirds of the new North American manufacturing will take place in Mexico, helping the country soak up a full 20 percent of the content's automotive production for the first time. You can head over to the Wards Auto site for the full report.
