Toyota recalls power window switches for 6.5 million vehicles [UPDATE]

"We have 11 reports where part of the door trim and/or switch was burnt," she said. The company isn't aware of any crashes from the problem, though. Because of a potential short circuit in the driver's side power window switch, Toyota is recalling 6.5 million vehicles worldwide, Reuters reports. Of those, the automaker says around 2 million are in the US. The affected models here are: 2007 and 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid 2009-2011 Corolla 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid 2009-2011 Matrix 2006-2011 RAV4 2009-2011 Sequoia 2009-2011 Tundra 2006-2010 Yaris 2009-2011 Scion xB 2009-2010 Scion xD According to Toyota, the switch might not have received adequate lubricant grease during manufacturing, and over time this could lead to a short circuit. In a worst-case scenario, the part might even overheat, melt and cause a fire. As a fix, dealers will inspect the component on these vehicles and apply heat-resistant grease to it, and any broken examples will have an internal circuit board replaced. Toyota already issued one recall for this problem in 2012 when it had to repair 7.5 million vehicles globally from the 2007-2009 model years, including 2.5 million in the US. These latest models had the grease applied in a different way. Virginia Maiden woke up Tuesday, May 14 to find her 1995 4Runner - that she thought she forgot to lock - swiped from her apartment building. At 3 PM that afternoon, while working her shift at the drive-thru at McDonald's that day, she saw her truck in line. York hadn't even gone far - the McDonald's is not even five miles from Maiden's apartment. Maiden called the police, they showed up just as York was leaving, and York made another vehicle switch, this time into a black-and-white for a trip to the Benton County jail. They don't have McDonald's there, but she won't have so far to go to eat.

Redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra spied testing in Canada

When Toyota first announced that it would be bringing the 2014 Tundra pickup to next month's Chicago Auto Show, we weren't quite sure if the truck would fall into the "all-new" or "refreshed" category. After seeing this latest set of spy shots, we're striking "all-new" from the record, but the enhancements do appear to be more than just a simple nip/tuck.
While the overall shape and greenhouse haven't really changed, heavy cladding found on the front fascia suggests that a totally redesigned nose is in store, with a fully reworked grille flanked by new headlamps. Smaller styling details are hidden by the big panels of camouflage, but we anticipate a few minor tweaks to the rest of the pickup's design when all that black tape finally comes off.
Mum's the word on powertrain enhancements (if any), as well as any changes that have been made to the chassis. But with the updated 2013 Ram 1500 already on the street, the recent unveiling of the updated 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins, and a preview of what's to come from the likes of Ford, we certainly hope Toyota has injected enough new blood into its 2014 model year pickup to keep it competitive in this American-dominated segment.
