1978 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser Frame off restoration (March 2015)........Please read carefully:1978, the last year of the classic round bezel and most sought after in those models. The restoration started with a cosmetic overhaul after all mechanical checks and maintenance. The whole truck was disassembled piece by piece and attended to. The rear tub was replaced with an aluminum aqualu tub upgrade ($5000) manufactured in Canada........no worries of ever rusting! (The FJ tubs were susceptible to rust especially at the rocker panels, rear sill, and rear quarters due to poor quality sheet metal.) All new Toyota OEM replacements were used when available. Engine bay is all original with the exception of the carburetor which is a Weber. If you are a purist, I can easily put an original one back on. Engine fires right up without the need of the choke. The original 2F 4spd engine has less than 100K miles, runs extremely strong, and cruises comfortably down the road. All cylinders passed compression tests. All smog components are still in tact (just not attached). Truck runs a lot better and breathes better without this increasing hp. This can be easily reconnected if your state requires it (CA). I had my friend who is a master Toyota tech for Town and Country Toyota (Charlotte) spend 4 weeks fine tuning this vehicle. Tires are all new 33" BFG Mud Terrains. Just added a new Optima battery and muffler. All new OEM weather stripping, emblems, correct stainless steel hardware, door run channels, etc. Seats have been re-upholstered with all new CCOT leather covers exact to Toyota specs. Suspension includes a 3.5" lift kit with OME springs and RC shocks. The original radio in dash was left for classic appeal and value, but a JVC Bluetooth CD player was added in addition to a Tuffy console box. The 3 Stage paint is absolutely perfect........no expense spared on the meticulous paint job. Paint job was completed by J & T body Shop Charlotte, NC with over 40 years experience! All Seats have new leather upholstery in gray color code CCOT Toyota specs! All new stainless hardware inside and out for appearance, durability, and never to rust! Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers

Sun, Mar 29 2015

As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. Toyota confirms i-Road electric trike for production

Tue, 08 Oct 2013

The wacky, three-wheeled Toyota i-Road we saw in Geneva earlier this year will be heading to production. But before you run down to your local Toyota dealer looking for one of these all-electric "personal mobility" vehicles, chances are, you'll never actually see one unless you visit Japan.
Announced at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) expo last week, Toyota said that the i-Road would be used as a part of the Ha:Mo car-sharing system in Japan. Weighing in at around 661 pounds, with a 28-mile-per-hour top speed and a two-passenger seating arrangement, the i-Road seems more like a fully enclosed scooter than a car, but it does offer a 30-mile driving range and has a nifty articulating front suspension that leans into corners. As for Ha:Mo, Toyota says that the number of cars in the program will increase from 10 prior to October 1 to 100 by the middle of this month, and the number of stations will almost double from 13 up to 21. Toyota has more details about the car and Ha:Mo in the press release posted below.

Toyota offered $146.5 million to build Lexus ES in Kentucky

Thu, 18 Apr 2013

Toyota posted a media advisory yesterday saying that Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota, and Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota North America, would be making a production announcement tomorrow in New York City, and Automotive News reports that the automaker will be announcing a plan to domestically produce the Lexus ES. According to the report, numerous plants are competing to build the ES in North America, and the State of Kentucky has offered the automaker up to $146.5 million to build the luxury sedan at the Georgetown, KY assembly plant.
If Georgetown gets the ES, which has been built in Japan since its debut in 1989, it would be built alongside the Toyota Camry, which is somewhat ironic since in our review of the 2013 Lexus ES350, we wrote that this ES finally says "goodbye to its Camry roots." In order to get the whole amount offered, the article states that Toyota would have to invest $531.2 million and hire 570 full-time workers at the plant, which doesn't sound all that unreasonable since the plant would require an additional 50,000 units of annual production, not to mention the fact that the Georgetown facility is already at its capacity for building the Camry.
