1978 Toyota Fj40 Land Cruiser on 2040-cars
Charleston, South Carolina, United States
I bought this car in 1988 in Hickory, NC. It was my first vehicle and I have owned it since then. I was the 3rd owner and apparently it was bought in NC. I drove it to South Carolina a few years ago and the rust started showing up recently. I have decided to let go of this car simply because it will continue to deteriorate here. I had it painted about 5 years ago and put brand new BF Goodrich tires on it then too. In 1989 the oil pump went out and I mistakenly kept driving it and blew the motor...I replaced it with another Toyota FJ40 straight 6 with less miles. The odometer is broken, but I would guess that the body has 150,000 miles on it and the engine about 120,000. The other gauges work, but the odometer stopped working a few years ago. The car runs great. I recently had it tuned up and the Toyota mechanic, who sees a lot of FJ's said that this one had "really good bones" and that it was a solid vehicle. You will see in the pictures that there are some rust spots that could use attention. There is a missing antenna, missing mirror on passenger side, and a fender flare needs replacement. The original seats could use stitching, but I just covered them with covers. The brush guard that I bought is bent. That's about all the bad stuff. The car is a beauty and very cool. I am including the roof rack as well, but it needs new clamps to attach it...I get get it to attach with a few of the clamps, but it would be more secure with new ones. You could easily drive it home with a couple of safety straps for good measure.
If you need more pictures, just ask. Buyer assumes all responsibility - no warranty offered. Buyer pays shipping and makes all arrangements for pickup. I have this car listed on other sites and reserve the right to take this one down early at any time. Buy this baby and give it a little love... it will love you back. |

Australia may offer money to keep Toyota making cars there
Tue, 04 Jun 2013In the wake of last month's announcement that Ford will cease automotive and engine production in Australia after 2016, many are wondering what the country's other automakers will do. Holden has already confirmed it will stay the course despite Ford's exit.
Much of the GM subsidiary's reason for sticking around has to do with a deal made last year between Holden and the Australian government. In order to secure a GM investment of $1 billion and a commitment to keep manufacturing in Australia through 2022, the government threw in an extra $215 million. According to Australia's Minister for Innovation and Industry, Greg Combet, the government is now in talks with Toyota for a similar deal.
Toyota operates one plant in Australia, the Altona manufacturing and engine plant in Victoria. The facility produces the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Australasia-only Aurion for both the local market and export. The report from GoAuto indicates that negotiations with the Australian government would include adding production of a third, all-new model at Altona, possibly the new RAV4, because it shares many parts with the Camry.
Child cobalt miners: Automakers pledge ethical minerals sourcing for EVs
Wed, Nov 29 2017BERLIN - Leading carmakers including Volkswagen and Toyota pledged on Wednesday to uphold ethical and socially responsible standards in their purchases of minerals for an expected boom in electric vehicle production. Demand for minerals such as cobalt, graphite and lithium is forecast to soar in the coming years as governments crack down on vehicle pollution and carmakers step up their investments in electric models. To cover its plans for more than 80 new models by 2025, Volkswagen alone is looking for partners in China, Europe and North America to provide battery cells and related technology worth more than 50 billion euros ($59 billion). Talks with major cobalt producers, including Glencore, at VW's Wolfsburg headquarters last week ended without a deal. More than half of the world's cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country racked by political instability and legal opacity, and where child labor is used in mines. On Wednesday, a group of 10 leading passenger-car and truck manufacturers announced an initiative to jointly identify and address ethical, environmental, human and labor rights issues in raw materials sourcing. The partnership dubbed "Drive Sustainability" consists of VW, Toyota Motor Europe, Ford, Daimler, BMW, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo Cars and truckmakers Scania and Volvo. The alliance "will assess the risks posed by the top raw materials (such as mica, cobalt, rubber and leather) in the automotive sector," said Stefan Crets of the CSR Europe business network. "This will allow Drive Sustainability to identify the most impactful activities to pursue" to address issues within the supply chain.Reporting by Andreas Cremer.Related Video: Image Credit: Michael Robinson Chavez/The Washington Post via Getty Images Green BMW Ford Honda Jaguar Land Rover Mercedes-Benz Automakers Toyota Volkswagen Volvo Green Automakers Green Culture Electric Scania ethics mining
Toyota GT86 GT4 racer is ready for UK competition
Tue, 05 Feb 2013It's about time we saw someone cook up a legitimate race version of the delectable Toyota GT86, and now it looks as if GPRM has done just that. The Buckingham-based race engineering team has built the creation you see here, complete with a turbocharged 2.0-liter, direct-injection four-cylinder boxer cooked up by Nicholson McLaren Engines. The team says the new mill delivers between 360 and 400 horsepower to the rear wheels depending on final testing, which is a sight bit more than the 197 horses the naturally aspirated stock mill offers.
The car will compete in GT4 events, including the Avon Tyres British GT Championship. Technically, the GPRM effort isn't factory backed, but the team says the effort "has the blessing of Toyota Great Britain." How could it not? You can check out the brief press release below below, and be sure to take a closer look at the machine in our gallery.
