One Man's Passion

Hemmings just published their 5 top predictions for 2014. #3 is as follows: "The Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser will become the next Volkswagen 21-Window Samba bus. In the past three years, prices for restored Volkswagen buses have shot through the roof, with the rarest examples consistently realizing six-figure prices at auction. A similar phenomenon is beginning to happen with Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers; once a rare sight at high-end auctions, their presence has become expected, and prices for well-preserved or meticulously restored examples have risen accordingly. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if an exceptional FJ40 topped $100,000 at auction in 2014."

Here's a spectacular 1976 FJ40 that has undergone an extensive and spot on restoration. Perfect is a strong word but this is darn close. Probably better than new. The owner doesn’t even like to take this out on windy days, let alone rain. Very few miles since total restoration. Beautiful paint, body, frame, engine bay and interior. No excuses and no disappointments. Comes with all the car candy, owners manual, toolkit w/tools, jack, jack rods, 12v inspection light and car cover.

Highlights:

  • Frame sandblasted then powder coated.
  • Wheels sandblasted then powder coated to OEM spec.
  • Tub and body panels blasted and then worked to perfection, etched, sealed and finished with AkzoNobel Sikkens premium Base coats and clears.
  • Rebuilt original 4.2 L (4230 cc) Toyota 2F engine with compression on all cylinders at 150 psi.

Toyota Harrier gets a whale of a facelift [w/video]

    Thu, 21 Nov 2013

Historically, the Toyota Harrier has been a doppelgänger for North America's Lexus RX - at some points, it was little more than a badge-swap and a few options away, at least aesthetically. That appears to be changing with this just-revealed new generation at the Tokyo Motor Show.
That's because this two-row, five-seat Toyota is in possession of a bold new look, dominated by a jutting, baleen-like grille edged in chrome, along with new headlamps and fascia. The greenhouse has likewise been revamped and gotten more pointed at the rump, which has new taillights, a resurfaced tailgate and a faux rear diffuser. Were it to be ported over to North American Lexus dealers intact, the Harrier's look would be jarring in light of the brand's spindle-grille-based design language, so we suspect that if the RX gets any of these updates (it was just refreshed for 2013), it will strike out on a different path visually.
Unlike the US RX, the new Harrier will rely on smaller-displacement four-cylinder engines, namely a 2.0-liter paired with a continuously variable transmission or a 2.5-liter four backed up by an electric motor. We'd like to see a smaller-displacement option for the US RX (it presently runs with 3.5-liter V6 engines in both gas-only and hybrid guise), but suspect it won't arrive until the next all-new model.

Why Toyota Camry's Korea Car of the Year win is a big-time upset

    Tue, 26 Feb 2013

The 2013 Toyota Camry is officially the car of the year in Korea. The country's motoring press graced the Japanese sedan with the honor for the first time, officially marking a shift in prevailing Korean attitudes toward Japan and its products. According to industry analysts, buyers in the country are no longer simply choosing their purchases based on whether or not they're made in South Korea, but rather based on quality and personal choice. That's a big jump from a few years ago, when buyers viewed their purchases through a patriotic lens.
The Camry managed to edge out a total of 44 other cars, including hardware from both Hyundai and Kia, to become the first foreign vehicle to take home the Korea Automobile Journalist Association's Car of the Year award. As The Detroit News points out, just 10 years ago, domestic manufacturers held some 99 percent of the Korean car market. But a change in trade regulations has opened up the country considerably, and buyers now have access to a wide range of products from around the globe. As a result, Hyundai and Kia have countered by cutting prices in an attempt to keep their grip on the market.

Watch this video diary of a 900-hp Toyota Supra build

    Sat, 08 Jun 2013

If you've ever looked at a car with nearly 1,000 horsepower and wondered why anyone needs that amount of thrust, you may want to take a look at the video below. In it, one gentleman details his descent into Toyota Supra madness, starting with a pristine factory example and stumbling down the rabbit hole of modification. What makes this particular clip interesting is just how honest the owner is as he explains the evolution of his car. He doesn't just prattle off a list of parts like he's reading the menu at an IHOP.
Instead, he painstakingly pulls us through the car's growth, detailing each iteration and what pushed him to the next stage of the build every time. From this point of view, it looks less like someone walked into a shop and lit a massive stack of $100 bills on fire and more like a quasi-logical progression of events. Or at least it does to me. You can check out the build in the video below, complete with plenty of Fast and the Furious references and racing. Win, win, win.
