1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 40

Here is a very honest solid little FJ40.  Purchased in Idaho by my client in 2005 then taken immediately to TLC in Van Nuys CA to have Jonathan Ward's ICON team do full "Stage Two" mechanical inspection and refurbishment which totaled $21,411.  TLC inspected and refurbished everything mechanically in need, here is a partial list of the mechanical work done: all wiring and electrics refurbished, installation of "Old Man EMU" suspension and shocks, all tie rod ends updated, R&R cylinder head resurface and overhauled, new smog legal header/manifold, oil pan gaskets and all oil hoses refreshed, ignition fully serviced and parts replaced as needed, axels spindles and wheel bearings serviced and packed, cooling system checked and refreshed hoses etc., wheel cylinders and brake linings serviced and replaced as needed, R&R clutch disc and pilot busing and rear seal, all u-joints serviced, steering arms serviced and fuel system completely refurbished, new exhaust installed.

The car remains in excellent mechanical condition today having had regular services.  This FJ has had sparing street use since 2005 covering less than 5k miles.  It has been garaged whilst here in the Bay Area.  Paint is decent and serviceable and appears to have had only one re-spray.  Interior is not fully OEM (front seats changed) but nice and sanitary.  Underneath the car is excellent, no rot, no rust holes, no corrosion and very clean with only very slight surface rust in some areas.  No evidence of any leakage either evidently benefit of the TLC work performed.

The truck drives great!  Tight, good clutch engagement, nice non-gronchy gearbox and good power, and everything works sans a radio (note hole in dash.)  Interior is very clean and nicely detailed.  Top, latches, bumpers, lights, emblems wheels and tires all look very nice although tires are as replaced in 2005 and should before heavy use be refreshed.  On the whole, an extremely solid, well preserved, largely OEM stock Land Cruiser 4X4 with hard top in excellent mechanical and good cosmetic condition.  This is a private part consignment FJ-40 being sold "as-is" by Driveline.  The truck is located here in the SF Bay Area.  Inspections welcome and please call 650-261-1777 for any questions.

Autocar pits McLaren MP4-12C against turbo Toyota GT86

Thu, 29 Aug 2013

The Toyota GT86, in all of its forms, is one of the best-handling cars money can buy, a trait that can put a smile on the faces of all but the most jaded car enthusiasts. But if good handling isn't what they're looking for, then what is? Our first guess would have to be more power, something the 200-horsepower Toyota would benefit from. Autocar tries out that theory by driving two turbocharged GT86s on track, then pitting the more powerful one against the 616-hp McLaren MP4-12C in a track battle.
The first GT86 turbo Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe drives makes around 255 rear-wheel horsepower and a bucket-load more torque than the stock car. That's plenty of power to either have a lot of fun or get into a lot of trouble. But the GT86 that Sutcliffe tails in the McLaren is race-prepped, stripped to the bone and wears slicks to harness a heavy-hitting 335 hp at the wheel. Weighing in at under 2,500 pounds, the Toyota can't overcome the MP4-12C's power-to-weight ratio of 5.3 pounds per horsepower, but it comes pretty close.
Enjoy a lot of chasing and drifting fun in the video below!

Toyota recalling FJ Cruiser due to excessively bright headlights

Sun, 05 May 2013

Now, hold on. This recall isn't quite as serious as it sounds. Yes, Toyota is recalling 11,489 FJ Cruiser models from the 2007 to 2013 model years, and yes, it's because the vehicles, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states, "fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, 'Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.'" But read the fine print and you'll see the catch: This recall is only for vehicles fitted with the automaker's auxiliary lighting kit that can be mounted to the front bumper.
Basically, the auxiliary lamp assemblies use 55-watt bulbs, and when these are turned on in conjunction with the upper beam headlamps, it's a pretty blinding sight. NHTSA states that excessively bright lights can blind other drivers, increasing the risk for a crash.
To remedy the situation, Toyota will replace the 55-watt bulbs with cooler 35-watt units. The recall is expected to begin later this month. Scroll down for the full details in the NHTSA report.

Toyota puts three-wheeled i-Road into public tests in Japan [w/video]

Fri, Mar 7 2014

The lucky citizens of Japan are getting it now, and some folks in France will join the fray later this year, but that's about it for public, leaning-trike fun. The car in question is Toyota's three-wheeled i-Road concept electric vehicle. And in addition to being really narrow and quite environmentally friendly, this little EV leans quite a bit when it scoots around curves. Earlier this week, the Japanese automaker started testing the super-narrow vehicles in Toyota City, Japan. They're part of a broader scheme called "Ha:mo" in which people can link shared vehicles with public transportation systems to get around with minimal environmental impact. Grenoble, France, will be the recipient of some i-Road EVs for a vehicle-sharing project that starts later this year. The i-Road weigh about 660 pounds, is less than a yard wide and has a 28 mile per hour top speed. The i-Road was first shown off at the Geneva Motor Show early last year and shortly thereafter was the subject of a groovy video that showed a group of four cruising and leaning through the streets of a Mediterranean village in France. Check out Toyota's video on the vehicle-testing program and the official press release below and read our driving impressions here. This content is hosted by a third party. Changing Mobility and Lives, Three Wheels at a Time Residents of Toyota City, Japan, might be wondering what they just saw on the street. If it had three wheels and was leaning around a corner, it was the "i-Road", Toyota's ultra-compact all-electric, all-fun concept. On Sunday, the i-Road, which weighs a mere 300 kg and is less than 90 cm wide, was let loose on public roads at an event to mark its introduction into "Ha:mo", Toyota's optimized urban transport system. Soon, even more i-Roads will be zooming around Toyota city when they are made available to residents at vehicle-sharing stations. And later this year the lucky residents of Grenoble, France, will also be able to have some three-wheeled fun, thanks to a vehicle-sharing project that will last until 2017. Besides being an absolute blast to drive, how could the i-Road actually help you out? Well, picture the following: You just got off work. You get a phone call. You need to get across town, pronto, because your wife just went into labor. But your car is in the shop, there's no time to call a taxi, and your co-workers with cars are stuck doing overtime.
