I have been looking for a nice FJ40 for a long time.  I purchased this one for my nephew who was returning from serving in Afghanistan.  He is now attending American University in Washington DC and can not take the Land Cruiser given he does not have a safe/appropriate place to park/store the FJ. I have kept it stored in my garage and have been enjoying driving it to work on the nice days.

As a result, I am thinking about keeping the FJ40 for myself, but thought I would let the market decide whether I should sell or keep it. Its paid for - and I do not need to sell it.  Given how well it drives - I would consider keeping it since I am not confident I could find another that drives this nicely

It is a 1971 FJ40 and is in what I would consider VERY GOOD condition.  This truck has not received a body/off nut and bolt restoration but many aspects of the FJ40 have been updated, restored, or replaced.  So...it is not a "show" restoration but it receives countless compliments due to its condition and many would consider it in Exellent condition.

1.  It has a 1977 2F engine (upgrade/iimprovement from the original '71 F engine).  It starts, idles, accelerates, runs, exactly how it should - which is perfect.
2.  It has the 1977 4 speed manual transmission (upgrade from the original 3 speed tranmission).  It shifts, and down shifts, perfectly. The clutch is new and it mechanically drives as it should.
3.  The front differential and disc brake setup is also from the 1977 FJ40 (major upgrade from the front drum brake originally on the 1971)  It brakes amazingly well - evenly, does not pull or pulsate.  NO COMPARISON to how a drum brake FJ40 stops.
4.  The vehicle is geared low - so it does great around town and my commute to work where I do not exceed 60mph.  I have driven it on the highway at 65mph without any issues, and it does not "wobble" nor "wander" on the road.  You can tell that it has ample power/torque as it pulls up grade on the highway very nicely  but is running out of gear to keep up with traffic in the left lane where cars are  doing 80 in a 70mph speed limit.  Therefore - this FJ40 really belongs in the right lane.

Other:
Zero visible rust nor signs of prior rust problems (driver floor pan patched/repaired with replacement metal)
All of the fluids have been changed.
Rear jump seats (center facing)
Front wipers work
Heater (front and rear work)
All of the lights/blinkers/brake lights work
Pioneer stereo/CD included
A/T tires are in good condition with miles remaining
Hard top shown is NOT included as it belongs to another FJ40 that is under complete restoration.  I do have a bikini top for the FJ40.

FJ40 really does not need anything that I am aware of.  If I keep I would likely put new tires on next year to improve the ride - but not with any urgency.  I have not owned this that long - but I have racked up both local and highway miles and have the confidence to drive this to California tomorrow.  I have owned many show cars, sports cars, and luxury cars over the years.  For whatever reason - this is becoming one of my favorites so I will not be upset if it stays in my stable.

Lastly:

Feel free to inspect/drive if you are a local buyer.

I will not ship overseas

I will not disclose a "buy it now" price - this is an auction to the highest bidder

First Toyota unintended acceleration case headed for trial

Mon, 22 Jul 2013

Toyota is going to be back in the spotlight, as the first of its unintended acceleration lawsuits is headed for trial. This case covers a Los Angeles sushi shop owner, Noriko Uno. According to the what the family told The Detroit News, Uno only put about 10,000 miles on her 2006 Toyota Camry in four years. Uno was apparently afraid of high speeds, avoiding the freeway and taking a route home along LA's surface streets to avoid them.
On August 28, 2009, Uno's Camry suddenly accelerated to 100 miles per hour, eventually striking a telephone poll and a tree and killing her. The family contends that Uno attempted to step on the brakes and pull the emergency brake, neither of which brought her speed under control, while Toyota maintains that improperly installed floormats and driver error have been behind the majority of the 80 cases expected to be heard in court.
In Uno's case, The Detroit News is expecting the trial to focus on the lack of an override if the gas and brake pedals were pressed at the same time. Brake overrides were installed on Toyota's European fleet. The Uno family attorney will need to prove to the jury that it wasn't driver error that killed Noriko Uno.

2015 24 Hours of Le Mans live race report

Sat, Jun 13 2015

Check back regularly for more race updates every few hours. No, you don't need to stay up for the entire 24 Hours of Le Mans, but if you want to catch any of the action, Autoblog friend Reilly Brennan has a handy guide. And to keep you up to speed on the latest race events, we'll be posting live from Le Mans with regular race reports.Hour 1: Five laps in, Audi breaks up the three Porsches at the front, with the #19 919 Hybrid, driven by Nico Hulkenburg, passed by all three R18s. Hulkenburg eventually took back fifth position only to fall back again after the first pit stop. Meanwhile, clutch trouble kept the #23 Nissan GTR-LM in the pits until 15 minutes into the race. The other two Nissans were forced to start at the back of the grid after failing to the meet the 110 percent qualifying speed regulation. At the end of the first hour, just 7.5 seconds separated the first six cars. Then the factory team #92 Porsche GTE car caught fire, with the the #13 Rebellion P1 car taking frontal damage in the ensuing carnage. With the safety car out, the field is once again bunched up.Hour 2: The slugfest between Audi and Porsche continues, with neither side backing off. Halfway through the second hour the #7 R18 passes both leading Porsches for the top position. After another round of pits stops Porsche regains the lead until lap 30, when the Audi overtake once again and quickly pulls out a three-second gap. Nico Hulkenburg passes the other two Audis to join his Porsche teammates. At the beginning of the third hour it's Audi #7, Porsche #17, #18, and #19, followed by Audi #8 and #9. 33 seconds separates this group, with Toyota a minute back from the front car.Hour 3: On track the action refuses to stop. Although it's early, Audi is looking strong with the overall lead in the #7. What's more is that the Audis run four stints per set of tires, while the Porsche cars have to change rubber every third stop. But after a quick refueling, the lead R18 gets a tire puncture and comes back in 3 laps later, allowing Porsche to take over the top two spots. Then as the hour closes out a yellow flag causes traffic to bunch up and the #8 Audi gets stuck with nowhere to slow down. Driver Loic Duval dives for the side of the road but hits the guard rail and careens across the track, damaging the front and rear bodywork. The rest of the car is still intact, though, and once in the pits Audi replaces the entire front and rear of that in only three minutes.

Mazda CX-5 named Japan's Car of The Year, Subaru BR-Z wins "Special Award"

Mon, 03 Dec 2012

The Mazda CX-5 stamped its Kodo design and SkyActiv technology authority all over the Japan Car of the Year awards, taking the top prize ahead of the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT 86. It is Mazda's second victory in the last ten years, the 2005 MX-5 claiming the same trophy, and the fourth time the Hiroshima company has won.
The award is decided by 60 local "automotive experts and journalists," and open to any passenger car released in Japan from November 1, 2011 to October 31, 2012 that has sold more than 500 units. Each judge gets 25 votes, his or her top vote getting 10 points, the rest of the points being spread among the judge's choice for the next best four cars.
The second-place getters were the Toyobaru twins with 318 votes, the surprise being they didn't beat or get any closer to the crossover. The Subaru BRZ did claw some mojo back, earning the Special Award given to cars that have made "an exceptional impact." The BMW 3 Series was third overall and won the Import Car of the Year award with plenty of room between it and the second place Range Rover Evoque.
