2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Review

Review

These scores and this review are from when the car was new.

The Highlander Hybrid has a spacious interior, capable handling and good around-town fuel economy, but lacks the edgy exterior styling found on most hybrids. If you're in the market for an affordable midsize SUV, you should also consider the conventional Toyota Highlander and the GMC Acadia, which also achieve competitive fuel economy for the class. For an alternative hybrid SUV option, consider the highly rated (but premium-priced) Lexus RX Hybrid.

The 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid continues its reputation as a great family car with a spacious interior, confident handling and practical hybrid technology. A new edition of the Highlander Hybrid is being introduced for the 2008 model year.

To most people, the Highlander Hybrid (and its sibling, the conventionalHighlander) are anything but exciting. But that's not to say they're disliked.Edmunds notes, "As the first seven-passenger hybrid vehicle Toyota's alternative-powered SUV is revolutionary in its own quiet kind of way. This hybrid should make the move into the high-tech age painless for the typical family car buyer." Versatility, reliability, and roominess have led the Highlander (including the Highlander Hybrid) to be, as Kelley Blue Book points out, "one of the most popular crossover SUVs on the market."

Experts recommend considering the Highlander Hybrid if you want to go green. But don't assume that you'll be saving money versus a conventional Highlander. The USA TODAY points out that "hybrids typically fall well short of their fuel-economy ratings. Most people won't save enough on fuel to offset the higher initial price unless they roll up traveling salesman's miles or keep the hybrid nearly a decade." In addition, BusinessWeek says the "bad news" is that the Highlander Hybrid is "pretty pricey" relative to its class, and a notable amount more than most other SUV hybrids.

IntelliChoice has named the 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid a "Best in Class" winner for Best Overall Value of the Year and a "SmartChoice" winner for Lowest Fuel Costs. IntelliChoice also gives the Highlander Hybrid a value rating of "excellent" for its predicted five-year cost of ownership compared to other vehicles in its class.

2014 Toyota Corolla shows its new Euro-spec nose [w/poll]

Fri, 07 Jun 2013

After tons of teasing, Toyota finally unveiled the all-new 2014 Corolla in the wee hours of the - at least to those of us here in the Midwest. The fresh new face of the US-spec car takes a number of cues from the Camry and Avalon sedans, and in S trim with the large alloy wheels and blacked-out front fascia, we'd even venture this is the most boldly styled North American Corolla to date (faint praise as that may be).
Of course, our friends in other markets will also be getting fully updated versions of the Corolla as well, and here, we're getting our first glimpse at the European-spec car, complete with a very different front fascia that, at least in this trim, seems to take a more conservative design approach. A quick poll of the Autoblog staff shows that we're torn as to whether or not we prefer this European look to our North American-specific car, but at least in the sporty-ish S trim, we think the Americans may have got the better end of the deal.
The Euro-spec Corolla actually shares a lot of its design with its larger platform-mate, the Auris, a car that we don't - and likely won't - get in the States. Inside, the European Corolla looks basically the same as the NA car, and while market-specific engines and specifications haven't been released yet, it's expected that the Corolla will share much of its dirty bits with the European Auris, as well.

Toyota, Mercedes, BMW top automakers included in List of Best Global Brands

Tue, 01 Oct 2013

Interbrand, a consultancy firm, has published its 13th annual list of the best global brands. Besides seeing some shakeups at the top - Apple and Google unseated Coca-Cola (a company that has dominated the survey since its birth), the 100-item list features 14 automakers, most of which enjoyed double-digit gains in brand value.
Toyota managed to retain its spot as the study's top automaker. It finished the survey in 10th position overall (the same as last year), despite a 17-percent improvement in its brand value, from $29.33 billion to $35.34 billion. Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Honda all made the top 20, at 11th, 12th and 20th place, respectively. Hopping a ways down the list, we come across Volkswagen in 34th place, up from 39th in last year's study, with a brand value of $11.12 billion, a 20-percent improvement over 2012. Ford and Hyundai round out the automakers in the top 50, at 42 and 43.
Porsche made the largest year-over-year gain of any automaker, with its brand value increasing 26 percent to $6.47 billion. Chevrolet meanwhile, cracks the list for the very first time at 89th place. As Interbrand notes, Chevy's inclusion is notable because of the sheer number of vehicles it moves for General Motors and its recent push in developing markets. The final interesting note on this survey is the position of an automaker that takes its name and logo more seriously than perhaps any other - Ferrari. The Italian exotic manufacturer finished 98th out of 100, with just $4.01 billion in brand value, a six-percent improvement over 2012.

Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.
