Clean carfax record (preview provided in my photos, will give full report to buyer)

Aftermarket sound /navigation/phone system:
- Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD -- 5.8" touch-screen, radio, CD/DVD player, built-in iPod control, GPS navigation, hands-free bluetooth supporting phone or audio (will automatically mute the radio when a call is received, and allow you to speak naturally thru the speakers)
- Crunch amplifier -- 600 watts
- 10" Kicker subwoofer in custom fiberglass box that fits snuggly into the side of the trunk
- Premium JBL speakers

Quirks (because all cars have them):
- The driver's side door actuator motor needs to be replaced in order for the remote and power buttons to lock/unlock the driver's door. Right now the driver's door locks/unlocks only with the key. All other doors work normally. This should not be an expensive repair, and is potentially a DIY project.
- The person who owned the car before me didn't want to pay to fix a broken clockspring in the steering column, which was causing the horn not to work, so they re-wired the horn to sound from a button on the side of the steering wheel. After I bought the car, I had the broken part in the steering column replaced, but a mechanic still needs to re-wire the horn back to the steering wheel for normal usage. In case this is confusing: the horn works, but you have to press a button, not press the center of the steering wheel.
- There are some chips in the paint on the front bumper and some minor (nearly invisible) scratches on the passenger side of the car. There are no dents and no rust.
- Celicas have a rear windshield wiper with its own windshield wiper fluid, however the fluid is not coming out for the rear windshield. The hose possibly needs to be replaced? The fluid works perfectly for the front windshield, and all wipers work normally.

This is, to the best of my knowledge, a full report of the car. I have not had any problems with the transmission grinding. I believe that I had the clutch replaced last year, I will have to search thru my paperwork to verify that. The brakes and tires are in satisfactory condition. The timing belt has been recently replaced (verified by carfax report).

I am selling this car because we're expecting a child, and I need to upgrade to a larger vehicle. If it weren't for that, I would not get rid of the car because it has been very reliable for me and is in good overall condition.

Kelley Blue Book for this car in current condition is $5500. I am asking $6000, which will include the complete aftermarket sound system. I will also accept $5500, but for that price I will take the aftermarket amp, subwoofer, CD/DVD/GPS/bluetooth unit out of the car, and you will need to purchase your own radio. I will leave the speakers and the standard amp that is built into the car.

Please email me if you understand the description I have provided, the price I am asking, and are interested in viewing the car. Cash only, no trades. Car is in the Kansas City area. You must come pick up the car. I will not ship it. I will post more pictures when I have time.

Lexus Eco Challenge rewards schools for clean water, briquette press projects

Fri, Feb 28 2014

Teams from one New Jersey high school and one Michigan middle school reversed the old adage by thinking locally and acting globally. And that strategy won them the grand prizes in the most recent edition of the Lexus Eco Challenge. The future is indeed bright. The Toyota luxury-vehicle division gave out a half-million dollars in this year's contest. One $30,000 grand prize was awarded to the Pinelands Eco Scienteers from Little Egg Harbor, NJ, which produced and distributed low-cost briquette presses to rural villages beset by deforestation. The other grand prize went to the E.T. Electrical Team from Byron Center West Middle School in Michigan. That middle-school group raised money to send water filters to Haiti, Kenya and the Philippines. Lexus also awarded eight $15,000 first-place awards, with the winners including high schools from California, Florida, Missouri and Pennsylvania as well as middle schools from Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina and Texas. A special shout out goes to Daniel Boone Area High School in Birdsboro, PA, where students created an educational and public-relations campaign to publicize algae-based biofuels. In all, Lexus has doled out more than $4 million in Eco Challenge awards in seven years. Check out Lexus's press release below. Students Get Dollars and Sense in Lexus Eco Challenge - $500,000 Awarded to Teams Who Learn About Environment and Community Empowerment Two Grand Prize Teams Earn $30,000 Eight $15,000 First Place Awards Given to Innovative High School and Middle School Teams Students Bring Ideas to a Larger Audience and Make a Positive Impact on the World TORRANCE, Calif., (Feb. 24, 2014) – It's a win, win situation! Communities become a better place, and students, teachers and schools have the chance to share $500,000 in scholarships and grants through the Lexus Eco Challenge. This year, the $30,000 Grand Prize winners are the Pinelands Eco Scienteers from Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, and the E.T. Electrical Team from Byron Center, Michigan. The Lexus Eco Challenge is an educational program and contest that inspires and empowers young people to learn about the environment and take action to improve it. High school and middle school teams nationwide define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report on the results.

How many Toyotas are potentially affected by seat fabric problem?

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

When we reported yesterday on Toyota's stop-sale order of certain 2013 and 2014 models due to an issue with the fabrics on models with heated seats not conforming to flammability regulations, one of our many questions was how many vehicles were affected? More importantly, how many of those cars have already found homes?
Kelley Blue Book has the troubling statistics. Every 2013 and 2014 Avalon features heated seats. 6.2-percent of 2013 and 4.5-percent of 2014 Camry sedans, meanwhile, were sold with heated seats. That doesn't seem as bad as 100-percent of the larger Avalon, until you consider the Camry's huge volume - the 5.6-percent average still accounts for a lot of cars. Sienna minivans are heavily affected as well, with a total of 37-percent of 2013s and 46-percent of 2014s fitted with butt warmers. The stop-sale only affects 7-percent of 2014 Corolla models, but like the Camry, that number is rather misleading due to the sheer volume of cars Toyota moves. You can see the entire breakdown of percentages by clicking on the inset image.
According to Karl Brauer, a senior analyst for KBB, this problem comes at the worst possible time. "Given that much of the US is currently in the grips of a record cold snap, there's sure to be high demand for models with seat heaters," Brauer notes. The stop-sale order is a good first step, but it doesn't do anything to inform consumers who currently own the affected models and may, in these frosty temperatures, want to use their seat heaters. "Should owners of those vehicles stop using the seat heaters?" Brauer asked.

Toyota to buck engine downsizing trend, may go larger and turbo-free

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

Turbocharging isn't really Toyota's specialty, and the Japanese automaker isn't being shy about acknowledging it. Koei Saga, a senior managing officer in charge of drivetrain research and development, says that eschewing turbos and increasing displacement of engines using the Atkinson cycle can produce better power gains without sacrificing fuel economy, Automotive News reports.
Toyota is investing heavily in larger-displacement Atkinson-cycle engines in addition to turbocharged engines, but Saga doesn't think the automaker will use turbocharging across many product lines. He apparently remains unconvinced that the technology "makes the world better."
In Toyota's eyes then, Atkinson cycle engines do make the world better, and here's how. Their pistons complete four processes - intake, compression, power and exhaust - in one revolution of the crankshaft, and the power stroke is longer than the compression stroke. Traditional Otto cycle engines require two crankshaft revolutions to accomplish those same four operations and have equal-length compression and power strokes. Atkinson cycle engines are more efficient, but less power dense, though increasing displacement can offset that shortfall.
