I am selling my beloved Tacoma. A new puppy, and more importantly, a new girlfriend, means that my daughter and I need a bigger vehicle. So up for sale goes Ivan the UnTerrible. :(

This is the 4 cylinder, 2.7l gasoline engine with manual transmission access cab model. It has manual windows, mirrors and seats. It does have AC (works really well) but no cruise control. It's a simple but efficient truck that will see you many many years of troublefree service. I am the second non-smoker owner. I can email you the latest CarFax report.

I've done some minor modifications; the tailgate is now lockable, all the interior lights are super bright LEDs, I've replaced the windshield wiper stalk with one that has an intermittent feature, and added a dock for XM XpressR satellite radio in the glove compartment. The interior is super clean; as soon as I got it I put the CalTrend NeoSupreme seat covers on. The seats are fine underneath, I just like the feel of the neoprene. And I put the Lund Catch-It Floor Protectors in, which catch everything you may drag into the truck. I also added a couple of D-ring tie downs in the truck bed, and there is a rollable tonneau cover.

I just last week had the truck looked over at a Toyota dealership; they found nothing wrong with the engine but convinced me to run some engine induction cleaner through for $150. I had the oil (full synthetic), oil filter and air filter changed just at 56,674. The truck burns no oil and runs great. I've had no issues with this vehicle at all (aside from the steering column spiral cable going out which was covered under Toyota warranty; a well know issue), and I really do enjoy driving a stick shift. Over the course of the 24,000 miles we've been together I've averaged 21.4mpg on regular gas.

There are two blemishes on paintwork: 1) near the driver's door, I was hit by a huge rock somewhere on the highway and the paint has been chipped there. And 2) the previous owner must have bumped something on the passenger side as there is a minor dent there.

There is some rust forming in the license plate area of the rear bumper and the steel wheels are starting to show a little surface pinpoint rust. Aside from that the body is rust free.

(The truck has WA plates on because I am working temporarily in Pittsburgh, and the plan was to drive this vehicle back to Seattle in October. Quality Tacoma's are rare on the West coast, especially stick shift 4 cylinder ones.)

Owner reflects on his $20.91 Toyota unintended acceleration settlement check

Sat, Nov 29 2014

Where General Motors and Takata have grabbed many auto safety-related headlines this year with their problems with ignition switches and airbag inflators, a few years ago, a similar sort of scrutiny fell on Toyota for unintended acceleration. After multiple settlements with various parties totaling billions of dollars, the issues seem largely behind the Japanese automaker now. Owners are actually starting to receive their money, but it isn't exactly breaking the bank. Payouts are expected to be between $37 and $125 per person. Computer science student Jonathan Sourbeer received a check for just $20.91, and he considers what that money actually means in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal. Sourbeer's biggest gripe is that the roughly 85 lawyers in the case are receiving $227 million in attorneys' fees and expenses, while the 25 primary plaintiffs and class representatives receive a total of just $395,270. According to the Frequently Asked Questions about the settlement, Toyota set up a $250 million fund to pay affected owners, as well. The money isn't for injuries or damages but for alleged economic loss to the vehicles. However, Sourbeer says he feels no personal suffering and still has the same car. In addition to the settlement, the automaker obviously has its own legal fees to deal with, as well. Sourbeer wonders how this is all going to affect Toyotas in the future. Obviously, the money has to come from somewhere, and it likely gets amortized over the company's vehicles in the coming years to add a few dollars to each one. That puts the problem back onto customers. Anyone involved in a class-action suit has likely seen this happen first hand. The lawyers take a large chunk of the money, and the rest is distributed in tiny morsels to those actually affected. Unfortunately, Sourbeer offers no solutions beyond saying the system needs to change.

Toyota maintains world's largest automaker crown, GM and VW close behind

Wed, 24 Apr 2013

Toyota still holds the title of World's Largest Automaker. The Japanese automaker ceded the claim to General Motors in 2011 following a series of natural and man-made disasters that stifled production in Asia. Production is back up to full speed and, coupled with the introduction of a new Camry midsize sedan, Toyota retook the title in 2012 and has so far been able to keep it by selling 2.43 million vehicles in the first quarter of 2013.
The race is still tight - General Motors reports sales of 2.36 million vehicles, earning it the second spot globally with Volkswagen's 2.27 million sales nabbing the German automaker third place. It's not all smooth sailing for Toyota, either, as the brand's first-quarter figures were down 2.2 percent when compared to last year. GM posted a 3.6-percent gain and VW managed a 5.1-percent gain over the same period.
Sales in China may be a deciding factor as to which automaker performs best in 2013. Toyota's figures were down 13 percent in China. Meanwhile, GM and VW are continuing their upward trajectories in the crucial Chinese market.

Russians create Toyota Land Cruiser ice sculpture with full interior

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a pretty hot model around the world. But it took the Russians to make it cool. We have few hard, cold facts and only small slivers of information about these photos, but it seems the icy Toyota was part of the International Snow & Ice Festival in Perm, Russia.
Artists took a huge chunk of ice and shaved it down to the temporary art installation you see here. The sub-zero SUV comes complete with a full interior accessed by the (permanently frozen open) driver's side door. The steering wheel and seats look to be upholstered in, well, dirt. With the back seats removed, the frigid four-door is a pretty slick ride in which to chill out.
Just a thought, but wouldn't a Toyota Tundra have been more appropriate? See the gallery for more photos.
