A 1983 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Long bed Deluxe pickup.  This is a project truck that I purchased this last summer for restoration.  This is a totally stock and unmodified pickup and is a great restoration candidate.  The truck is very solid with the typical pinch weld rust above the rear wheels on the pickup bed.  These beds notoriously rust in this area.  The rest of the bed is very solid with the typical dings from shifting cargo.  The cab has a few door dings but is solid otherwise.  The paint is original and has "Nevada Sunburn" which means it has been totally ruined by the the intense sun.  Areas where the paint has fallen off have been covered with white primer.  The undercarriage is dirty but there shows no frame damage or rust.  The rear axle has some surface rust.
All the lights work as well the heater and fan.  The truck does have a/c but is not working.  The interior is is all original but the radio had been taken out and replaced with an aftermarket unit.  The dash frame was cut for this but original dash frames are still available through salvage yards and are easy to remove/install (8 10mm bolts and it all comes out).  The dash pad in cracked but new ones are still available.  The seats are pretty good with the drivers seat torn on the bottom cushion.  The Deluxe trucks have the vinyl mat and is does have cracks and holes.  The door panels are in nice original condition.  I think the blue interior looks good on these trucks.   New NOS Toyota sun visors installed and look great.
The engine is a little trooper, never failing to start in intense heat or in frigid cold.  I purchased the truck in August when the temps were 104 and this winter we had a cold snap when the temps dropped to -11.  No problems.  The timing chain is a little rattly upon startup but smooths out when the oil pressure builds up.  Usually a couple is seconds for the oil pressure to come to normal.
The transmission is a 5 speed and it shifts easily and smoothly.  It is very noisy in all gears except 4th.  The syncros work well and it does not pop out of gear.  This was going to be my next repair.  The clutch is strong and smooth.  The brakes perform excellent with a little more than half the pads left and good solid peddle feel.  This pickup has non power steering but really is not a problem.  A little heavy at times but I found the steering effort to be quite acceptable.
The 4 wheel drive works well.  The truck handles very good in the snow even in 2 wheel drive.  A little brute.
In August I took the truck to a local mechanic who preformed over $1600 in repairs.  They include:

Replace Valve cover gasket
Adjust Valves
Replace water pump and antifreeze
Replace front and rear output seal on transfer case
Replace Distributor  O-ring
Replace front knuckles wheel seals and repack wheel bearings
Repair emergency brake
Replace gasket on exhaust
Replace exhaust manifold gaskets

The tires have lots of tread but I believe these to be quite old and the front tires probably should be replaced if driven at higher speeds.  The truck has the original white steely wheels which I prefer.
These old Toyota trucks are a blast to drive but they are VERY basic and offer no creature comforts.  They are not that great on the highway as the suspension is very stiff and with the motor only producing 95 horsepower,  the truck is pretty slow.  Lots of rattles and noise associated with a 31 year old truck.  Have I talked you out this yet?    A modern Tacoma they are NOT but thats what make them so appealing!
Shipping is the direct responsibility of the buyer (if there is one!).  A $500 deposit via Paypal at auctions end is required with the balance due at pickup.  The truck is listed elsewhere for sale and the auction may be ended at any time.

Thanks for looking.

Incrementally better than ever | 2017 Toyota 86 First Drive

Tue, Oct 4 2016

We'd love to tell you that the incremental upgrades bestowed upon Toyota's rear-wheel-drive coupe as it made its transition from Scion FR-S to Toyota 86 have transformed it into a perfect sportscar. If only a few more horsepower, shorter rear-end gearing, and tiny aero updates were enough to quell all the complaints that enthusiasts have leveled at the machine since the platform first hit the road in 2012, this review would have been so much more satisfying to write. Sadly, that's not the case. Don't get us wrong. The 86 is still extremely fun to toss around a twisty road. The chassis is impressively balanced, the steering is direct, and the shifter is sweet. Sorry to impart upon you this well-worn trope, but the old adage that it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow is, in this case, completely accurate. The 2017 Toyota 86 is nothing if not entertaining. But it's not completely new. It hasn't been transformed. It is, in the end, the same as it ever was. It will take about three minutes of your time to watch the videos below, in which we cover pretty much everything that's new for the 2017 Toyota 86. Toyota 86s equipped with manual transmissions get a five-pony boost to 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. Automatic models soldier forth with a carryover 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 200 hp and 151 lb-ft. Apparently, more than half of Scion FR-S buyers chose the automatic. That's unfortunate, as it drains a good deal of the fun out of the 86 experience. Choose the manual and you'll be rewarded with an easy clutch and a rewarding short-throw shifter. And, as we said, five more ponies, courtesy of intake and exhaust tweaks and the polishing of some internal engine components. The only upside to the automatic is improved fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway. Manual 86s are EPA-rated at 21/28. Along with the small bump in power, the 2017 86 gets a 4.3:1 rear-end gear ratio in lieu of the old 4.1:1 unit. That ought to translate into a small improvement in acceleration that really only matters on paper. In the real world, on actual roads, the difference is negligible. To eke the most out of the 86, you have to constantly work the shifter and keep the engine north of 5,000 rpm. It's still not particularly quick, but it's definitely fun. There's plenty of noise inside the 86, from the wind, the road, and the engine.

Camry, Avalon Hybrids involved in stop-sale of 50,000 Toyota vehicles

Thu, Jan 30 2014

A number of popular Toyota vehicles can currently not be sold thanks to something called a "stop-sale" order. The reason is that the seat heater on these vehicles - which include the 2013 and 2014 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Sienna, Corolla, Tacoma and Tundra models - "does not meet a provision of US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requiring materials to retard flame at a specified rate." In other words, the seat heater could burn too fast. There have been no reports of fires or injuries due to the issue. Toyota told AutoblogGreen that around 50,000 vehicles are affected. No Scion or Lexus vehicles have the problem. The exact fix has not been identified, but Toyota said it is preparing a modification for all vehicles still on dealer lots, but there has not yet been an official recall. Instead, Toyota filed a "Non-Compliance Information Report" with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today. You can read Toyota's official statement below. Toyota and NHTSA are also looking at around 30,000 2007-2008 model year Camry Hybrids for brake issues. Seat Heater Non-Compliance Issue Creates Temporary Stop Sale On Certain Toyota Models January 30, 2014 Toyota has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it has initiated a stop sale of certain Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles equipped with seat heaters in order to address a non-compliance issue. In involved vehicles, the seat heater, which is a small portion of the soft materials of the seat assembly, does not meet a provision of U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requiring materials to retard flame at a specified rate. Toyota is preparing a modification for this condition, which will be implemented on all covered vehicles in dealer inventory. There have been no reports globally of any related incidents in the field with units in operation. Per NHTSA regulations, Toyota will file a Non-Compliance Information Report today. Scion pondering move upmarket?

Mon, 01 Apr 2013

Scion is simultaneously celebrating its ten-year anniversary with the 10 Series models and trying to figure out what to do with itself over the next ten years. Once a go-to consideration for young, first-time buyers who wanted something cool and different, in 2013 it has a model everyone is still talking about in the FR-S, a model few are still talking about in the iQ, and three models in between in the tC, xB and xD that make everyone wonder, "What happened?"
Automotive News spoke to Toyota's North American CEO, Jim Lentz - he was the VP in charge of Scion when it launched - about the options, and Lentz said one of them could be a move upmarket to challenge the established luxury brands that are moving downmarket. "There's going to be a big need in the $25,000 range for a fun-to-drive, nice-looking, value-oriented product," he said, and the FR-S, which starts at $25,255, could provide the platform for Scion to climb up a notch or two in price and perception. An idea like this could conceivably work in tandem with a proposal to move entry-level Scion products over to the Toyota brand - but remember, this is all just ideas on a whiteboard at the moment.
As opposed to an "entry-luxury fighter," the brand could swing back to the other option that was considered when it was formed, directly challenging the Korean makes that have usurped its cachet with first-time buyers. Lentz said Scion could go either way, and the tone of the piece seems to indicate that the final direction is still a ways away from being resolved.
