For sale is a 1987 Toyota Supra, normally aspirated, about 90% restored. It runs quite good, but it turns out it is not the car for my soon-to-be 16 year old son - we are getting him something slower that has airbags and all the safety stuff.   Please see the included pictures, and I can provide others if needed. The car is a 5 speed, and has 210,700ish miles on the body (I drive it consistently, so this will go up). However, I have receipts for the following work this year that will go with the car:

$3552.81 for engine rebuild (macon motorsports)
$442.46 to redo the oil pan (it still seeps some oil, also macon motorsports, but not enough to justify an additional $442.46 again)
$466 for general Gmax AS03s - tires (225/50/ZR16)
$223.66 for tire installation, alignment, and check - Firestone
$642 paint (economy auto paint)
$862 new tie rods and ball joints (advantage wheel and tire)
$168.25 for new windshield
$484.40 for lowering springs (advantage wheel and tire)
$81.79 for manual transmission service - Firestone
$986.97 for new exhaust, new rotors, and new brakes (local exhaust/brake shop).
*note the macon motorsports bill includes the rebuilt engine, clutch kit, water pump, injector kit, hoses, and radiator.
**also, the car has been tinted ($250) as well as lowered, and the wheels and mouldings have been plastidipped - so you can take it off if you don't like it.

Other than the continued oil pan seep, there is still work to be done:

the overdrive light flashes (which is weird because that only applies to automatic transmissions)
the dash is cracked (I have a cover on it)
the oil pressure gauge doesn't read and the cruise control activates but doesn't hold the speed
the center armrest is loose (needs the original size screws).  Also, the radio is a Pioneer AppRadio, but I only installed part of the functions so my son wouldn't play with it while driving (the wires are all still back there)
the AC has a leak (I added Freon and it worked great for two days, so the compressor works as well as the interior controls) and it has dings and scratches and probably other stuff I am forgetting to put in this ad - please come check it out or ask me about stuff.
It also has a new battery this year, but I don't have the receipt for it.  And the struts for the rear hatch are old (I have the new struts, which I will include with the car) and the rear hatch squeaks because part of the rubber seal is gone.

Anyway, if you want a good sports car that's already had the expensive stuff done, this may be for you.  It is not a perfect car - I have tried to describe all the stuff that comes to mind, but I'm sure I am forgetting some items.  It is a 26 year old car, in good shape for 26, but still 26 years old, so it will have dings and scratches and squeaks.   The car is a used car, so is being sold with clear title, but As Is with no warranty.  I would prefer a $500 deposit through paypal if you would like to buy it (and I am very reasonable on the price), and the rest in cash if you are picking it up in person - if shipping contact me and we will work something out.  If you need it shipped, I will cooperate with your shipper and my end, but it is your responsibility to arrange and pay for shipping. Thanks for looking

An early gas-electric hybrid was developed by...Exxon?

Tue, Oct 25 2016

We're not sure which aspect of Exxon's 1970s-era efforts to develop advanced and electrified powertrains is the most ironic. There's Exxon, that of the Valdez oil spill infamy, being on the leading edge of hybrids and electric vehicles. There's a boat-like Chrysler Cordova getting 27 miles per gallon. And there's the central role a Volkswagen diesel engine plays in that hybrid development. It's all outlined in an article (linked above) by Inside Climate News, and it's an amusing read. Flush with cash and fearing what it thought was peak oil production in the 1970s, Exxon funded a host of new ventures divisions geared to find alternatives to gas-powered powertrains. In the early 1970s, Exxon lured chemist M. Stanley Whittingham to develop what would become a prototype of a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Then, in the late 1970s, Exxon pioneered the concept of using an alternating-current (AC) motor as part of a gas-electric hybrid vehicle. The company retrofitted a Chrysler Cordova (yes, that's the model Ricardo Montalban used to hawk) with a powertrain that combined 10 Sears Die-Hard car batteries, an alternating current synthesizer (ACS), a 100-horsepower AC motor, and, yes, a four-cylinder 50-horsepower Volkswagen diesel engine. The result was a rather large two-door sedan that got an impressive 27 mpg. And while US automakers didn't see the potential in the early concept, in 1980 Exxon and Toyota began collaborating on a project that would involve retrofitting a Toyota Cressida with a hybrid engine. That car was completed in 1981, and may have been one of the seeds that eventually helped sprout the concept of the Toyota Prius. Soon after rebuilding the Cressida, Exxon would get out of the advanced-powertrain-development business, as oil prices began to fall in the early 1980s, spurring cost-cutting measures. Cry no tears for the Exxon, though, as what's now known as ExxonMobil is the largest US oil company. Local production could improve Toyota Prius' fortunes in China

Wed, Apr 23 2014

The Toyota Prius is the world's most popular hybrid vehicle, but it may take domestic production capabilities for the model to achieve a high level of popularity in China. Japan-based Toyota is aiming to produce an increasing percentage of Prius components in China in order to bring down its price there, Bloomberg News reports. Eventually, the goal is to make all Priuses sold in China in that country in order to avoid the steep 25-percent import tariff. As it is, Toyota sold just 1,400 Prius vehicles in China last year, compared to about 234,000 in the US and 315,000 worldwide. Hindering sales is the fact that the Prius costs about as much as an entry-level Audi in China, where Volkswagen is the country's best-selling automaker. Toyota has been selling the Prius in China for almost a decade but may soon find local sources for the batteries and other hybrid parts for the Prius and Camry Hybrid, Bloomberg says, citing comment from Hiroji Onishi, Toyota's China chief, at the Beijing Auto Show. Part of the problem is that the Chinese government provides less than $500 worth of subsidies for each hybrid sold, compared to about $9,600 for an electric vehicle. While that subsidy may rise as China municipalities take on the country's growing pollution problems, there's lingering concern over spurring sales of a car that's made by competing Japan. Toyota starting making some of its Prius vehicles in China in 2005 but halted production on the second-generation version of the hybrid four years later.
