I'm the second owner and honestly just bought the car six months ago. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it - I basically just wanted a newer car for my commute and although I can afford it (well, not technically - thanks Dave Ramsey!), the luster has worn off and I'd rather save the car payment money. I currently drive 40k miles a year and that is about to double! The car is getting me the mileage that I expected - my 6 month / 16k mile average is a hand calculated 45.5mpg - and this is 90% interstate! Thanks to the warmer weather and the move away from winter fuel, my last 5 tanks have averaged over 47mpg. I wish I drove more city, b/c it performs even better!! My main issue is I am having second thoughts on driving a newer car like this into the ground w/ my commute. I also have an older VW TDI and it's long been paid off. I was going to sell it, but I'll "ruin" it instead and save the car payment money for repairs down the road. Like I said, there is nothing wrong with the Prius. It currently has 83k miles and may go up slightly. I honestly searched for several months to find it. There were five packages offered for this model year - I, II, III, IV and V. This is the top of the line V. So that means it has 17" wheels, proximity keyless entry (never take the key out of your pocket - doors unlock as you walk up and it has push button start), navigation, satellite radio, bluetooth, backup camera, heated leather seats, power lumbar in the seats, pop-up headlight washers and LED headlights (not HID.....LED!!). On top of ALLLL of that, it has the rare Advanced Technology Package. This is truly why I bought the car. With my commute on the interstate, it gets pretty boring. Boring can be unsafe. The ATP includes adaptive cruise control (it slows or speeds up with traffic), lane keep assist (it will beep if you drift and even steer the car to stay in your lane!) and also has automatic parking (parallel and backing in - my girlfriend loves this option). It literally has every option offered for the car (Toyota offered a solar powered roof, but only on IV models - not V - I have no idea why). As you can see in the pictures, the windows are tinted. It was factory maintained by the original owners and the only things I have done is change the oil with Mobil 1 full synthetic and add a K&N air filter (15-20k mile filter changes could add up, so I bought this solely for economics). The tires were new when I bought it, so I sold the factory wheels and had a set of black and polished 17" mesh wheels installed. In my opinion, it is one of the best looking Prius that I have ever seen. I have a clean CarFax from when I bought it. There are no title issues. My credit union holds the title, but I have bought and sold a lot of cars over the years and it is a painless process with them. I'm just looking to get what I owe on it, so $16.5 is where I am right now. We can draft a Bill of Sale and send your payment overnight to the credit union. They will then overnight the title to you....at least this is how it has worked in the past. It's been a few years since I have sold a car that I owed money on. I know Florida has an option for electronic titles, so it may be able to be released that way - I will call and check on that. |

RC car drift video brings Fast and Furious style in 1:10 scale
Mon, Apr 13 2015Taking a cue from Lexus' 2015 Super Bowl ad Let's Play, Falken Tire is proving that RC cars can drift just as well, if not better, than their full-size counterparts. However, to make things four times as exciting, this clip eschews a single hopped-up model hanging its tail out in favor of a quartet of them sliding around together. Starring 1:10 RC versions of popular drift machines like the Nissan S15 Silvia, Mazda FD-chassis RX-7 and Initial D star Toyota Corolla AE86, these cars also get a suite of blinking LEDs to lend some extra color to all of the tire spinning. Plus, the use of well-positioned cameras and a scale model environment almost makes this group look like they're at work in the real world. Toyota develops new pre-collision system with steering assist
Sun, 13 Oct 2013A number of automakers are working on developing fully autonomous cars, but it looks like the groundwork for such technologies will likely show up first as semi-autonomous systems for both safety and convenience. Following recent announcements from Nissan and Ford in this area, Toyota has now released information for some of its advanced semi-autonomous technologies that could be offered in production cars over the next few years.
On the safety front, Toyota's new pre-collision system with pedestrian-avoidance steering assist is aimed at protecting the folks who aren't in the car. This system combines visual and audible alerts with automatic brake assist and automatic steering. If warnings don't get the driver to slow down, the brake assist kicks in if a collision is very likely, but if that is still not able to avoid the impending collision (and if there is enough room to do so), the car can automatically steer itself around the pedestrian. This sounds most beneficial for last-second dangers such as a person accidently stepping out into the road in front of a car. Toyota hopes to have this technology available to customers by 2015.
The Japanese automaker is also testing a suite of technologies called Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA). The key part of this is a new adaptive cruise control system that uses vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications rather than a radar-based system. This cooperative-adaptive cruise control allows vehicles to communicate their acceleration and deceleration data with other cars, which Toyota says this helps to improve fuel efficiency and traffic flow. Also a part of AHDA is the Lane Trace Control feature, which sounds like a next-gen lane keep assist. This system uses cameras, radar and a computer to keep the vehicle in a "smooth driving line" by being able to change steering angle, engine torque and braking force. Toyota says this technology could be in place by the "mid-2010s."
Legal approach in $1.2 billion Toyota settlement could impact handling of GM recall cases
Wed, 26 Mar 2014In the past, if an automaker did something wrong, they were usually prosecuted by the US government through something called the TREAD Act. Short for Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation Act, it basically requires automakers to report recalls in other countries, along with any and all serious injuries or deaths, to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Failing to report or attempting to conceal anything when there's been a death or serious injury constitutes a criminal liability. The idea is that this setup puts the onus on manufacturers to keep NHTSA apprised of safety related issues before they become a problem in the US, thereby allowing the regulator to better protect consumers.
In theory, it sounds like a relatively airtight set of rules for dealing with misbehaving automakers. That didn't stop the US Department of Justice from ignoring TREAD in its prosecution of Toyota's handling of the unintended acceleration recall, though. The result of this new approach, which charged Toyota with wire fraud, was a $1.2 billion settlement. Now, the wire-fraud approach could be used for the expected case between the US government and General Motors, based on the statements of Attorney General Eric Holder, who specifically mentioned "similarly situated companies" when discussing Toyota.
