2003 Toyota Matrix XRS.  6 speed manual transmission.  The first owner was my father, I am the second owner, you are the third.  Sweet sliding and tilting sun roof works perfectly and does not leak.  The cool cargo nets and cargo straps that only came with this model (I think) are present and will be included for an extra $5,000.  -I'm joking, of course.  They are included...for free...really.  The tires are somewhat new (maybe a year?).  I got a new clutch in July.  Since the clutch, I've MAYBE put 700 miles on it.  Both front brake rotors are new (also in July).  I've always had generic plastic floor mats covering the stock Matrix floor mats, so those puppies are in rather decent shape for being 10 years old.  The car is presently dirty.  It's getting to be cold here, and I have not taken it to a car wash, yet.  Don't let the little bit of dirt in the pictures scare you off.

It can be quick when you need it to be so.  When you find a transmission to throw in this baby, you're gonna have a fun and solid car for another 155,000 miles.  This engine is strong.  I LOVE this car.  I planned on driving it till my kid becomes old enough to drive, but I had to get a pick-up truck for work.  So this must go.  The gas mileage is anywhere from 30 to 35 miles a gallon.  Man am I gonna miss THAT.

This car is NOT all wheel drive, in case that's what you're looking for.

There is a small ding on the passenger side front quarter panel from a misplayed baseball.  I don't think this car has ever been in an accident.  There is what looks like a cigarette burn hole in the front passenger seat, but my father swore it was NOT from a cigarette...in fact he could not tell me what it was from when I bought it from him, but in the 9 years since that hole magically appeared, it has not grown.  The plastic on the inside of the back hatch is cracked - I think there's even a small hole in it, actually.  A fog lamp is out. The headlights need to be "cleared", if you know what I mean.  -They have that haze, is all.  The exhaust leak is annoying.  The parking brake that does not work is also annoying.  That panel on the inside driver's side door that contains all the power window and power lock controls is loose...that's kind of annoying, too.  One or two lines in the rear window defroster are dead.  Sometimes a few of the lights on the radio face go dim.  The front ground-effect-spoiler-thing snapped off when I hit some debris on the freeway a few years ago.  The car certainly lost some of it's good looks when that happened, but I could never justify getting it replaced as I am not made of money.

All the cool amenities like the multiple power outlets, the little compartments to hide crap, the fold away drink holders, etc...are all intact.

I'm telling you...this car is awesome.  All the little annoying things are to be expected from a 10 year old car; and I don't believe they take the value down much.  The lame transmission, however, is a different story.  I THINK a new used tranny, installed, will run you between $1200 and $1800.  My goal is not to screw you, here.  I've listed about everything wrong that I can think of.  I truly believe this car has only lived half its life.  A new transmission and you're golden for another 10 years.

Hit me with questions or if you want other pictures, I can certainly email them to you.

Toyota drops detail about 414-hp Hybrid-R concept powertrain

Fri, 30 Aug 2013

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R Concept has been teased already, offering up little glimpses and details of the Frankfurt-bound vehicle. And while those few, shadowy shots have been great, we've really wanted to know how this hatchback would deliver its promised 400-plus horsepower. Under hood sits a 1.6-liter, race-derived, direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the front wheels. Sounds peachy, but with 414 horsepower splashed across the page, we're going to need something more than a 1.6-liter, turbo four.
A supercapacitor, developed from the Toyota TS030 Hybrid Le Mans racer sits in place of a hybrid's traditional battery packs. The benefit, according to Toyota, is that power can be more rapidly absorbed and discharged than in a traditional battery system, like nickel metal-hydride.
The gas engine is joined by a trio of 60-horsepower electric motors. Two of the them power the rear wheels, while the third sits between the engine and the six-speed, sequential gearbox. Developing the same amount of power as the rear-axle motors, this centrally located motor channels power to the race-derived supercapacitor during braking, and ships extra grunt to the rear wheels under acceleration when the front wheels start to lose grip. Besides the distributive power of the central motor, the rear electric motors can adjust the amount of torque flowing to each wheel, much like a differential.

Lightweight Toyota GT86 spotted on Nordschleife with carbon panels, upgraded aero

Tue, 24 Jun 2014

We've seen (and frankly reported on) so many rumors of more powerful and performance-focused versions of the Subaru BRZ, Toyota GT86 and Scion FR-S at this point that haven't materialized that, at this point, we're almost tired of them. Almost. But what we have here was enough to pique our jaded interests as only a carbon-bodied sports car on the Nürburgring could do.
What we're looking at is, well, we don't quite know, to tell you the truth. What we can tell is that it's a Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S for us) wearing new wheels and a carbon-fiber hood, roof, racing-spec rear wing and subtle lip spoiler. The vents in the hood indicate that the prototype in question could be packing an upgraded engine to go with the lighter body panels and upgraded aero, and the interior (at least as far as we can see) looks pretty well stripped out.
The right-hand drive configuration tells us this is either destined for former territories of the British Empire or for the racetrack. Considering the ride height, full glass and apparent lack of roll cage, our money's on this prototype is being developed for the Japanese Domestic Market, where Toyota badges the sports car simply as the 86. We can always hope, though, that some version makes it into Scion showrooms in North America... we just won't get our hopes up too high.

2013 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 4

Fri, 28 Jun 2013

The fourth and final practice day of the 91st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is complete. Tomorrow everyone will make any last-minute adjustments and get their cars, their bits and bobs lined up in the pits for Sunday morning's this-time-it-counts run.
The Unlimited runners took on the top section of the course today, Sébastien Loeb and his big-mouth Peugeot acing the practice test again with a time of 2:11. Rhys Millen's team proved its got the engine issues of two days ago in the Hyundai PM580T sorted out, posting the next-best time at 2:27.16. The reason we had to dip all the way into the hundredths for his time is because he nipped Romain Dumas by just .31 of them, the Frenchman in the Norma M20FC PP running the course in 2:27.47. In fourth came the Frenchman in the monster Mini, Jean-Philippe Dayraut six seconds back at 2:33.
Time Attack competitors, also on the upper section, were led by Paul Dallenbach in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe with a time of 2:36, Porsche pilot Jeff Zwart crossing the line six seconds later at 2:42, fellow Porsche driver David Donner coming in another six seconds back at 2:48. Dallenbach has topped three of the four practice-day sessions, sliding into the second spot behind Donner only on Practice Day 2.
