The nice weather is here and you are tired of driving your boring, mundane car... get a fun, fast, open-top summer toy as well as a collectible classic! Or give this as one heck of an awesome graduation gift!

I'm selling one of my MR2s; it is metallic green with t-tops, leather interior, good A/C, premium wheels, custom exhaust, adjustable shocks, uprated springs, J-spec engine freshly rebuilt with all new bearings and crank, JDM ct-26b ceramic bearing turbo (boosts to 12psi), Spearco intercooler, HKS Turbo timer, digital boost gauge, clear corners, HID headlights, cross-drilled and slotted rotors and more.

Pictures tell the story. The car is very nice, clean and fast, t-tops do not leak, but it is not flawless, it is a 21 year old car. On the other hand, flawless versions like this one sell for $14K (do a search to confirm), so the asking reflects reality.  Please bear in mind, while there are minor paint chips and the like, and 5th gear is worn, this car is the most desirable version: post-93 (suspension and handling improvements from earlier versions), Turbo (there is no comparison between turbo and non-turbo, 'nuff said), T-tops (oddly, there seems to be a recent glut of the hardtop coupes available; but you miss out on all the sunlight streaming in, wind in your hair action!) and has the leather interior (MUCH nicer than cloth).  All of these add significantly to the price and desirability of this vehicle.  You will still find some cars offered on the cheap, but they are invariably tired, worn-out, poorly running cars, frequently butchered beyond belief; if that is what you want to buy, fine, but this isn't that! This car is well sorted, looks great, and drives fast and smooth.

Now, if you have not driven a turbo MR2, let me assure you that this is the most bang-for-your-buck sports car you can probably find on the planet!  It is just so much fun to drive!  Also, if you are a gear head, you can modify this car to your heart's content.  There are plenty of 500HP+ MR2 builds out there, but I have no conceivable clue what you could want that kind of power to weight ratio for!  As is, this car is fast and nimble enough for just about anything you could want to do on the streets.  In addition, there is a huge online community of folks who know everything there is to know about these cars and how to do just about anything you could imagine to them.  Great folks.

OK, so as to try to avoid all the scammers out there: Serious buyers only. No tirekickers. Test drives only to those who have cash ready to go. Sold As Is and Where Is. No, I will not take PayPal. Cash or cashiers check only. No, I will not accept payment more than the amount of the car and "return" the overage. You must either pick the car up yourself or arrange your own transport. If you have some other sort of scam idea, DON'T waste my time. (Wow, I sound really bitter, but I have seen and heard too many...)

Toyota prices fuel cell sedan $70K in Japan, coming to US and Europe next summer [w/video]

Wed, 25 Jun 2014

Toyota has finally unveiled its FCV hydrogen fuel cell sedan and its Japanese price. We won't have to wait too long to see the first of these revolutionary vehicles on the roads. It will go on sale in Japan in April 2015 and will come to the US and Europe later that summer.
In Japan, the FCV will be priced at roughly 7 million yen before taxes ($68,810 at current exchange rates). However, Toyota makes it clear in the press release that we shouldn't try to extrapolate US MSRP from that figure, saying that official pricing for the US and Europe has not yet been determined. As will be the case in the US, sales in Japan will be limited to parts of the country that already have a hydrogen refueling infrastructure (that means you, California).
The production version of the FCV looks almost identical to the concept from last year's Tokyo Motor Show. There is a new vertical strip of LEDs at each corner of the front air intake and real sideview windows, instead of the nubs on the prototype. The weird squiggles from the rear trim are also gone in favor of a more production-ready look, but the taillights survive the changes mostly intact.

Cosworth teases upgrades for Subaru BRZ

Mon, 19 May 2014

Subaru may or may not produce an STI version of the BRZ. Things seem to go back and forth on the subject. But Subaru Tecnica International isn't the only company with a history of tuning Subies. So does Cosworth, and now the British racing firm appears to be turning its attention to the BRZ and its Toyota- and Scion-badged siblings.
For those unacquainted, Cosworth is more than your average tuning company. It's a racing firm first and foremost, having made F1 engines under its own name as well as Ford's (chief among them the all-conquering DFV 3.0-liter V8 of 1960s and 70s fame), not to mention engines for Indy, rally and even high-performance, road-going versions of the Ford Sierra, Chevy Vega and Mercedes 190E. The list goes on and on, but you get the point.
Now withdrawing from Formula One, Cosworth is focusing its attention on tuning road cars again with the launch of the Cosworth Power Package line, the first of which will focus on the Toyota GT86 (aka Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ. We don't know just yet what will be included in the packaged dubbed FA-20, but from the video teaser below, it seems there'll be upgrades to the exhaust, suspension, aero and - if we're lucky - maybe a super- or turbocharger for the 2.0-liter flat-four engine. We'll have to wait and see, but we get the feeling that with Cosworth on the job, it'll be worth the wait. Check out the minute-long video below in the meantime.

Toyota to buck engine downsizing trend, may go larger and turbo-free

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

Turbocharging isn't really Toyota's specialty, and the Japanese automaker isn't being shy about acknowledging it. Koei Saga, a senior managing officer in charge of drivetrain research and development, says that eschewing turbos and increasing displacement of engines using the Atkinson cycle can produce better power gains without sacrificing fuel economy, Automotive News reports.
Toyota is investing heavily in larger-displacement Atkinson-cycle engines in addition to turbocharged engines, but Saga doesn't think the automaker will use turbocharging across many product lines. He apparently remains unconvinced that the technology "makes the world better."
In Toyota's eyes then, Atkinson cycle engines do make the world better, and here's how. Their pistons complete four processes - intake, compression, power and exhaust - in one revolution of the crankshaft, and the power stroke is longer than the compression stroke. Traditional Otto cycle engines require two crankshaft revolutions to accomplish those same four operations and have equal-length compression and power strokes. Atkinson cycle engines are more efficient, but less power dense, though increasing displacement can offset that shortfall.
