Here's an original Freeborn Red (code 309) 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 with 83000 miles, Power Steering and Air Conditioning that has been lovingly cared for over the decades. There has been regular maintenance and the owner has taken great care to keep the Land Cruiser looking and running good.

Details & Condition

This gal has survived over three decades while remaining essentially stock. She has a precious few of the nicks and scratches that come with 35 years of age but any owner would be proud of her overall condition. She runs and drives great and has been lovingly maintained. You will NOT find diamond plate, fender flares, 8-track tape decks, CB antenna holes, bed lining, jerry cans, roof racks, a V8 or other modifications. The inline six cylinder purrs quietly and the steering, clutch and 4-Wheel Drive transmission are all in good working order as they should be for a vehicle with 83,000 miles. The floors are all solid, all turn signals, lights, wipers, taillights, backup lights, license plate lights, side markers and all gauges work perfectly. Much of the paint is original. Stock wheels and hubcaps, original mats, all new upholstery (it was cloth due to the Palm Springs climate). Body and undercarriage is well preserved by desert climate. The Cruiser has chrome accents and for those of you who prefer paint over chrome, the Land Cruiser comes with a full set of door hinges, hood hinges, kick vents and fuel door. The FJ40 suspension is comprised of rugged solid axles, new leaf springs from Specter Off Road that provides an additional 2.5" of ground clearance, shackles and Pro Comp shock absorbers at both ends. This FJ40 has factory Power Steering which makes it effortless to drive. The truck's original 4-speed manual transmission serves up legendary off-roading prowess. Front disc and rear drum brake combination for quick and responsive braking. At the back of the truck's frame you will find bumperettes flanking a military style pintle hook. Under it all you will find 15 inch OEM Gray steel wheels with new 31x10.50 Yokohama tires and Warn hubs.

Inside this classic you will find the original seats covered in new, factory correct vinyl. The interior door panels, mats, dashpad and headliner are in beautiful condition. Between the seats you will find the original console topped off with a vintage Con-Ferr center console with gray vinyl armrest. Below the dashpad, you will find some nice upgrades. The radio has been replaced with a Pioneer AM/FM/CD with free standing 6x9 speakers in gray carpeted boxes in back. The little impossibly dim green light under the dash pad has been replaced with a light that actually allows you to see the controls at night. The clear stock gauges and controls all work well and for extra added comfort, you'll stay nice and cool on hot summer days with air conditioning designed by Cool Cruisers.

A little Land Cruiser History - 1978 was a great year for the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. By 1978 you had the ambulance doors in the rear that replaced the old lift/tailgate, larger square front Turn Signals with side markers. Wipers were moved to bottom of windshield. 4:11 gearing provided excellent off road performance. Front disk brakes, Tubular spare tire mount, Pop-out rear windows gave passengers in back some fresh air. (End of History lesson)

Summary

Other than described, this is a beautiful unmolested, factory-original FJ40 that you can drive everyday and like all nice FJ40's, will attract a following of admiring fans! Quality vintage Land Cruisers like this represent a FUN investment and have been appreciating wildly over the past few years! This FJ40 includes the Owners manual, Toolkit, Jack, Jack rods. Report: Daihatsu leaving European market

Sun, 16 Jan 2011

More than any other, two carmaking giants sit at the top of the industry: Toyota and General Motors. But while GM sells under a (shrinking but still) expansive range of brands, the Toyota Motor Corporation sells most of its vehicles under its own name. That doesn't mean that Toyota, however, doesn't have its own portfolio of subsidiaries. Here in the United States we have the youth-oriented Scion division, while Lexus handles its upscale offerings, and overseas there's Daihatsu.
The budget brand offers a range of small cars under its own name; most are hatchbacks, but there's also the Copen roadster and even a rebadged Camry called the Altis. You may have come across some of their offerings while traveling overseas, particularly in Europe, but that last part is about to come to an end, according to reports.
Word from across the pond is that Toyota plans to withdraw Daihatsu from the European market altogether. The move would reportedly take effect in 2013, and if it comes to pass, would follow similar withdrawals from the North American (1992) and Australian (2006) markets. Thanks for the tip, William!

Toyota explains what names like Camry and Yaris mean

Mon, 20 Oct 2014

Ever wonder where automakers get the names for their cars? You're not alone. The sitcom Seinfeld opened Episode 94 - the one where George Costanza buys a Chrysler LeBaron instead of a Volvo - with a bit about nameplates like Integra, Supra and Impreza. Toyota, clearly, is not exempt from choosing evocative but enigmatic names for its models, and now the Japanese automaker is taking us through the etymology of some of its nameplates.
Names like Supra may require no clarification, but what about Camry? That comes from the Japanese word kanmuri for Crown (which is, incidentally, the name of another Toyota sedan).
Yaris? According to the company, it's "an amalgamation of words from Greek mythology and German. In Greek mythology, 'Charis' was a symbol of beauty and elegance. Toyota swapped the 'Ch' with 'Ya' - German for 'yes' - to symbolize the perceived reaction of European markets to the car's styling."

Raising A White Flag To The Competition
We all benefit from highly competitive battles. In the automotive sector, few campaigns are so closely fought as the decades-long struggle for supremacy in the fullsize half-ton pickup truck segment. The Ford F-150 has dominated for ages, but Chevrolet, Ram and GMC have been closing the gap with freshly redesigned trucks that are rocking the industry.
Today's half-ton trucks are better than they've ever been, and we have fierce competition to thank for that.
