Simple, rugged and accommodating.  If you’ve come to this page, you certainly appreciate those values.  One could make a pretty compelling argument that the FJ60 series is the high water mark at which these values intersect (passengers and cargo).  Codes like FJ and 2F have cult followings for good reason. This model is fast cementing it's place in the collector market because of these traits and the Toyota legacy.

This series was made from 1981 to 1987.  They came with 4spd manual transmissions and the legendary 2F in-line 6 cylinder engine.  Just gripping the steering wheel and shift knob gives a sense of nostalgia.  It’s a very purposeful vehicle.  Crank windows and a manual tailgate lock are not engineering shortcomings.  Instead they were very intentional.  They wouldn’t fail after years of use and that holds true today.

Some details on this vehicle almost seem like engineering courtesy.  For example, take a look at the back seat heater (see photo).  What a cool, simple reliable throw back.  The air conditioning, power steering, and head light washers take the edge off a bit.  Perhaps a precursor to what the model would become.  The power steering is very nice.  Subtle, but nice.

History:

This FJ began life in Texas, but found its way to Arkansas shortly thereafter.  Warm climates with virtually no snow (but definitely no salt) helped tremendously in its preservation.  The last owner stripped it to bare metal during a repaint in 2010/11.  All panels were in great shape.  They found a couple of small spots of rust on the rear fenders.  Each spot was treated the right way with new metal carefully welded in place.  The paint job is not show quality, but it is thorough and has held up respectably.  This is a very presentable SUV in excellent driver condition.   The interior is really sharp too.

Mechanicals:

The mechanicals have been treated with the respect they deserve.  The transfer case was rebuilt and new differential bearings installed in 2010, very few miles ago. The exhaust manifold was replaced by performance headers around the same time.  The muffler was installed just last March ’13 (even fewer miles ago).  She is throaty without being obnoxious and pulls like an ox – 2F torque and careful care. She’s been gargling Castrol synthetic blend to make sure it stays in tip top shape.  I don’t know what it is about these FJs, but they almost feel like their muscles are always half flexed - like a rock climber.  Ready for what lies ahead I suppose.

The AC went out suddenly last July.  Also, the horn does not work.  I took it to my mechanic to diagnose both issues.  The AC seems to be an accumulator issue.  The compressor itself seems just fine.  The accumulator is about $45.  The horns work fine.  It’s a problem with the ground wire.  It involves taking the steering wheel off and removing the ground wire(s) to clean or replace.  I’ve had the steering wheel off, it should be a pretty easy job.

Quite a few parts come with the vehicle (see picture).  They will all be in a plastic tub in the vehicle when purchased.

Cosmetics:
I’ve tried to document the car well with pictures.  A couple of items that should be pointed out are the headliner and dash.  At the very rear of the vehicle, the headliner has shrunk a bit with age and started to pull away from the rear windows.  The dash has a couple of cracks in it and a small piece where the vinyl is gone (see photos).  Neither is in terrible shape.  The previous 2 owners never felt the need to bother touching them.

Listing Details:

This vehicle was listed before.  Autocheck showed a salvage title.  That turned out to be erroneous (which explains why none of the last 3 owners knew anything about it).  The Arkansas DMV sent the necessary paperwork and Autocheck corrected their database accordingly.  The future owner of this truck will be glad this was taken care of.

Throw your family and friends in the back, load up a few fishing poles, bikes other outdoor gear and go for it!  This is a low mileage Land Cruiser that runs great, looks just as nice and has plenty of life left.  It has seen plenty of nature in its lifetime and I hope it gets to see a few more rivers and lakes!  It will certainly be in its element!  It would also be right at home in the snow.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange to see the vehicle, please contact me.  My cell phone number is (816) 786-7534.

I will not reveal the reserve price out of respect for the bidding process.  It is set well below where I imagine the car will sell.  So, bid with confidence the amount you feel comfortable spending or take advantage of the buy it now price.

Watch the Muppets go for ice cream in a Toyota

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

Do Muppets drive? We're not sure it's necessarily a good idea, but it's been known to happen. Fozzy called his hibernating uncle's Studebaker a bear's "natural habitat," and Doctor Teeth wouldn't get the Electric Mayhem very far without his band's psychedelically painted school bus. But how about Rolf in a 2014 Toyota Highlander?
That's what we got a glimpse of in the run-up to the Super Bowl, and the same combination (plus one Rizzo the Rat) that features in this adorably ordinary video below. Ordinary because it's just a couple of guys going out for an ice cream. Adorable because, well... they're Muppets. See what we mean in the surprisingly entertaining two-minute clip below.

Ford fights back against patent trolls

Fri, Feb 13 2015

Some people are just awful. Some organizations are just as awful. And when those people join those organizations, we get stories like this one, where Ford has spent the past several years combatting so-called patent trolls. According to Automotive News, these malicious organizations have filed over a dozen lawsuits against the company since 2012. They work by purchasing patents, only to later accuse companies of misusing intellectual property, despite the fact that the so-called patent assertion companies never actually, you know, do anything with said intellectual property. AN reports that both Hyundai and Toyota have been victimized by these companies, with the former forced to pay $11.5 million to a company called Clear With Computers. Toyota, meanwhile, settled with Paice LLC, over its hybrid tech. The world's largest automaker agreed to pay $5 million, on top of $98 for every hybrid it sold (if the terms of the deal included each of the roughly 1.5 million hybrids Toyota sold since 2000, the company would have owed $147 million). Including the previous couple of examples, AN reports 107 suits were filed against automakers last year alone. But Ford is taking action to prevent further troubles... kind of. The company has signed on with a firm called RPX, in what sounds strangely like a protection racket. Automakers like Ford pay RPX around $1.5 million each year for access to its catalog of patents, which it spent nearly $1 billion building. "We take the protection and licensing of patented innovations very seriously," Ford told AN via email. "And as many smart businesses are doing, we are taking proactive steps to protect against those seeking patent infringement litigation." What are your thoughts on this? Should this patent business be better managed? Is it reasonable that companies purchase patents only to file suit against the companies that build actual products? Have your say in Comments.

Toyota recalls slew of models for possible airbag calibration defect

Mon, 28 Jan 2013

Toyota is recalling sixteen models from the 2009 to 2013 model years over a potential issue with passenger seat airbag calibration. In spite of the large number of different Toyotas covered by the recall, just 3,235 units are included. These were vehicles installed with accessories like leather seat covers and headrest DVD systems by Southeast Toyota Distributors, and during the modifications the passenger seat occupant sensor system might not have been calibration tested. If the sensors aren't set up properly, the passenger airbag might not work as it should.
Affected models include: Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius V, Rav4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra and Venza. Scroll down for the relevant model years for each.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the recall will begin this month. Southeast Toyota will inform owners, at which time they can take their Toyotas to dealers for testing and repair. The complete bulletin from the NHTSA with more information is below.
