1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60
289,415 miles
Blue exterior, gray interior

This truck comes with 30 years of incredibly detailed service records. The binder includes the original window sticker, details about every gasoline fill-up since 1991, every hose, filter, and spark plug change, as well as larger items like radiator, brakes, and 2F engine replacement (by Jasper Engines, Oct 2005 at 246,786 miles).

Built in Japan (Dec 1982) and raised in Colorado, it has been garage-kept for its entire life. The original owner (Aurora, CO) sold the vehicle with 30,000 miles in May 1985 to the previous owner (Boulder, CO), who used it as a daily driver. Between 1985 and 2011, it was a family-used vehicle; it has not been used for rock climbing or off-roading. My fiance, the third owner, bought it in August 2011. In October 2011, it passed vehicle inspection in Massachusetts. During the last two years, she has used it has her daily driver, as well as road tripping from Minnesota to the east coast and back a couple of times. This truck was built tough and still runs strong.

Non-smoking owners.
Minimal surface rust: removal and repair of all body rust, as well as a professional paint job was completed in 2005
A/C blows cold.
No cracks in the dash. All switches and dash vents work perfectly.
Clean headliner (although one small area above the right rear window has come untucked, see pic).
Liftgate stays up on its own.
Tires have good tread and are not weathered.

Sale includes all service records. Most recent work completed:
Valve adjustment: 284.024 miles
New tachometer: 283,660 miles
Tie rod and relay rod ends: 286,305 miles
Firestone Alignment: 286,313 miles
Distributor cap, seal, and ignition rotor: 289,252 miles

The original radio was replaced with a Sony CD player in 2004, but I have the original radio in a box. The speaker on the passenger side door wasn't connected when my fiance bought it, so the only working speaker is on the driver side door.

ACCIDENT: In October 2012, the truck was parked in a parking lot when someone struck the driver side doors and fender, pushing the truck into the car next to it, thereby denting the right front fender as well. It has not been driven much since the accident, but we have taken it on short drives every couple of weeks to keep it running smoothly. It doesn't look as good as it used to, but the truck is still driveable. The left side doors do close (with some effort); they do not leak during rain storms. There was no damage to any of the glass. The repair (or replacement) of the body panels and left-side door column could return this truck to its former glory.

Before bidding on it, we welcome you to come inspect the truck in person.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Has the auto industry hit peak hybrid?

Thu, 12 Jun 2014

Hybrids are known for their great fuel economy and low emissions, but it looks like given current market conditions, only about three percent of new car consumers are willing to pay the premium for them. A new study from IHS/Polk finds that the hybrid market share among overall US auto sales are falling, despite more models with the technology on sale than ever before.
The study examined new car registrations in March from 2009 through 2014. In that time, the auto industry grew from 24 to 47 hybrid models available to consumers, but market share for the powertrain remained almost stagnant in that time. As of 2009, hybrids held 2.4 percent of the market; it fell slightly to 2.3 percent in 2010 and grew to 3.3 percent in 2013. However, 2014 showed a drop back to 3 percent. Overall hybrid sales have been growing since 2010, but they just aren't keeping up with the total auto market.
According to IHS/Polk, this isn't what you would expect to see. Usually, each new model in the market brings along with it a boost in sales. The growth in hybrid models 2009 to 2014 should have shown a larger increase in share for the segment.

An early gas-electric hybrid was developed by...Exxon?

Tue, Oct 25 2016

We're not sure which aspect of Exxon's 1970s-era efforts to develop advanced and electrified powertrains is the most ironic. There's Exxon, that of the Valdez oil spill infamy, being on the leading edge of hybrids and electric vehicles. There's a boat-like Chrysler Cordova getting 27 miles per gallon. And there's the central role a Volkswagen diesel engine plays in that hybrid development. It's all outlined in an article (linked above) by Inside Climate News, and it's an amusing read. Flush with cash and fearing what it thought was peak oil production in the 1970s, Exxon funded a host of new ventures divisions geared to find alternatives to gas-powered powertrains. In the early 1970s, Exxon lured chemist M. Stanley Whittingham to develop what would become a prototype of a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Then, in the late 1970s, Exxon pioneered the concept of using an alternating-current (AC) motor as part of a gas-electric hybrid vehicle. The company retrofitted a Chrysler Cordova (yes, that's the model Ricardo Montalban used to hawk) with a powertrain that combined 10 Sears Die-Hard car batteries, an alternating current synthesizer (ACS), a 100-horsepower AC motor, and, yes, a four-cylinder 50-horsepower Volkswagen diesel engine. The result was a rather large two-door sedan that got an impressive 27 mpg. And while US automakers didn't see the potential in the early concept, in 1980 Exxon and Toyota began collaborating on a project that would involve retrofitting a Toyota Cressida with a hybrid engine. That car was completed in 1981, and may have been one of the seeds that eventually helped sprout the concept of the Toyota Prius. Soon after rebuilding the Cressida, Exxon would get out of the advanced-powertrain-development business, as oil prices began to fall in the early 1980s, spurring cost-cutting measures. Cry no tears for the Exxon, though, as what's now known as ExxonMobil is the largest US oil company. China sticking to its guns on EVs for the future

Mon, Apr 27 2015

Automakers are obviously free to develop whatever next-gen, zero-emissions tech that they want. However, if a company wants to get on the good side of the Chinese government, that strategy better include some plug-in vehicles. The authorities there are lending major support to plug-ins at the moment, and its forcing the auto industry to play along. According to Bloomberg, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and BMW are all launching dedicated EV brands with their joint venture partners, and as many as 40 electric models could hit the Chinese market this year alone. However, analysts don't think the vehicles are going to sell well. Instead, the launches are essentially a way for companies to play nice with the government and help get the approval to build factories in the country. Take Toyota as an example. The company is pushing the future of hydrogen hard with promotional films for the Mirai and engineers talking down fast-charging EVs. Still, the Japanese automaker is getting ready to launch two EV brands in China with its joint venture partners, according to Bloomberg. China's push for alternative fuels has been happening for a while, but it really kicked into high gear last year. The government has set a goal to improve fleet-wide economy by 40 percent by the end of the decade in order to spend less importing oil and for the population's health. The plan has shown some success so far with hybrid and EV sales growing early in 2015.
