Toyota Land Cruiser BJ41 The Toyota Land Cruiser 40-series is known as a legendary platform around the world. In the US, most are familiar with the FJ40 model, a gas-powered 4x4 available up until 1984. This vehicle is designated as a BJ41, a diesel powered variant available exclusively in the Japanese domestic market (abbreviated as JDM). As an importer of 4x4 Land Cruisers, I couldn't pass up on the opportunity to purchase and import this "time capsule" of Toyota Land Cruiser history. This vehicle is a great addition to any collection. The originality and low mileage makes this one of the rarest 40's in the United States today.

One-Owner, Very Original Condition This BJ41 is confirmed to be a one-owner, well-maintained vehicle. The photos show the condition and tell the story. The body is nearly perfect with the exception of a small bit of previous repair in the rear by the driver tail light. The interior is immaculate! There's a small tear in the bottom side of the drivers seat cover, but otherwise it looks like it left the factory yesterday. This BJ41 has the optional rear heater, rear jumpseats and the very rare factory air conditioning. It also has the original split-rim wheels, and vintage tires. Also included is a stack of original documentation and paperwork. Everything works on this BJ41, including the air conditioning which was recharged with original R12. It has the original factory radio as well as a secondary Kenwood deck installed by the original owner. Speakers were also installed in the rear cabin by the original owner. The odometer shows 64,811 original KM's (40,271 miles), and the service records included with the vehicle verify that as the original mileage. It runs and drives great, like a nearly new 40 series should.

BJ41 Drivetrain The 40 series is a legendary platform known for toughness and reliability. This BJ41 is similar to the units available in the US except for its 2B diesel engine and low gear transmission. The 2B is a 3168cc inline 4-cylinder 8-valve OHV diesel engine. Compression ratio is 21:1 with output being 93HP at 2200RPM and 159 ft-lb of torque at 2200RPM. This engine was only available in JDM BJ41's, JDM BJ44's and the JDM Coaster (Toyota's small bus platform) making this a rare collectible Land Cruiser. The transmission is an H41 4-speed which is geared lower than the standard 4-speeds available with US spec 40 series Land Cruisers. This BJ41 has an ultra-low 5.29:1 first gear! The 2-speed transfer case has a low range of 1.959:1. The axles are the same as the US spec 40 series, 9.25" ring gear, open differential with 4.11:1 gear ratio.

Here's a list of what I've done to this BJ41 since it was imported in June of 2013: Replaced Engine Oil and Filter This represents the basic service I do to all vehicles I import.
Owning a Right-Hand-Drive Import First, this is a 100% legal and documented import vehicle. I have copies of all the customs, EPA, DOT and import paperwork that go with the vehicle to the new owner. This Land Cruiser has been titled in Missouri, and can be legally titled and driven in all 50 states. Replacement parts and accessories are generally available to ensure a long life of service. Driving a right-hand-drive vehicle is not nearly as difficult as it might first appear. After a few minutes, any driver can become comfortable with driving "on the wrong side." The uniqueness of this setup starts conversations and turns heads everywhere you go.

Honda may recall up to 1M vehicles for airbag issue, following Toyota's lead
Mon, 16 Jun 2014It seems Toyota won't be the only one recalling the faulty Takata airbag inflators for long. Honda insiders in Japan claim that the company is getting close to announcing its own worldwide campaign that would begin before the end of June.
Unnamed sources close to Honda in Japan tell Automotive News that the company is pursuing an internal investigation into possibly affected models and is working with Takata to gather more information. They claim that it could involve even more than the 1.14 million cars worldwide that the automaker covered under the first recall for the problem in April 2013, including 561,000 vehicles in the US.
Toyota jumpstarted this process last week when it recalled over 2 million cars worldwide, including 844,277 in the US. Soon after, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began a preliminary evaluation into the issue following six reported incidents, and started assembling data about potentially affected models from Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Chrysler. NHTSA also began investigating Takata itself.
Fuel cells will flop outside Japan, says VW
Fri, 12 Sep 2014
"It may fly within Japan, but not globally," VW's Shoji said.
It's long been battered into our beleaguered auto writer brains that the ultimate future source of motivation for tomorrow's cars and trucks is not gasoline, diesel, electricity, natural gas, propane or solar power - it's the hydrogen fuel cell. It's been the Next Big Thing since the start of Next Big Things.
Junkyard Gem: 2004 Pontiac Vibe GT
Fri, Jun 26 2020The New United Motor Manufacturing plant in Fremont, California, built Toyota-derived machinery — badged as Toyotas, Chevrolets, Geos, and Pontiacs— from 1984 through 2010, and some of the very last vehicles that left the assembly line were Pontiac Vibes. The Vibe, sibling to the Toyota Matrix, mostly served as a ho-hum transportation appliance and/or fleet car, but a factory-hot-rod GT version could be purchased. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those rare GTs, complete with the nearly unheard-of six-speed manual transmission, found in a self-service yard in northeastern Colorado. The regular Vibe had 123 or 130 horsepower, depending on the number of driven wheels, but the Vibe GT got the same 1.8-liter 2ZZ engine that went into the Celica GT-S. 180 horsepower, which was enough to make the 2,800-pound Vibe GT keep up with the 3,108-pound/215-horse Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo that year. Sadly, no race series pitting Vibe GTs against PT Cruiser Turbos and Chevy HHR SSs on road courses ever materializedÂ… but it's not too late. The Vibe GT has something you couldn't get in a PT Cruiser or Chevy HHR, though: a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. In fact, the six-speed was the only transmission offered in the early Vibe GTs (an automatic became an option later on). You'll find plenty of three-pedal econoboxes from this era, because they were significantly cheaper than their slushbox-equipped counterparts, but the Vibe GT had plenty of competition from sportier-looking cars with manual transmissions in 2004. Not many were sold. This car is covered with nasty dents from golf-ball-sized hail (all too common in High Plains Colorado), so it may have been an insurance total that nobody wanted at auction. Sold in Wyoming, will be crushed in an adjacent state. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Fuel for the soul. Toyota had right-hand-drive Matrixes brought over to Japan from Canada, but a NUMMI-built version of the Vibe could be purchased there for a few years as well. This was the Voltz, and its advertising seems notably frantic even by the standards of Japanese car commercials.
