Toyota Land Cruiser restoration shop is proud to offer this 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. I found this vehicle in rust free condition with 34,206 original miles in the dry wheat field region of Idaho. I restored it as you see it in the pictures below. This vehicle was an incredible find for me; I restored it to a spectacular level. This is an original type restoration. I bought Toyota OE parts when available, the emissions equipment are all intact.  This truck was advertised on Craigslist for $15,000, 3 major FJ40 restoration shops on the west coast got in a bidding war trying to buy it. Fortunately for me, I live 4 hours from this truck and showed up with trailer and cash.  Last picture on the trailer is how I bought it. This truck was almost a true survivor vehicle, but suffered a paint job in the 90’s, so I had to take it apart and bring it to its present glory.  White spoke wheels were on it at purchase, but I got the original wheels in the sale, and installed them. Many enthusiasts feel the 1978 FJ40 is the best year, last year of the 4.10 gears; you get the better design tub/body, with the modern components to make it a pleasure to drive. This truck runs/drives/performs beautifully.  This is a collector, blue chip, investment grade vehicle that will appreciate in value.

I have 146 pictures on a photobucket link before/during/after restoration. eBay won’t let me post that link, but I will email it to you, and or answer a customer question at the bottom of this page with the link. After you view the link to this vehicle, check out the other albums in that photo library for some of my past high end FJ40 builds.

HISTORY

This vehicle sold new at James Toyota in Moscow ID in 1978. The original owner traded it in for a pickup in 1980. M.M. bought the truck from James Toyota in 1981, and then sold it to D.M.C in 2004 until I bought it in 2013. I have a statement to that affect from the 1981-2004 owner. He also stated he sold the vehicle in 2004 to D.M.C. with 33,000 miles on it, with the original tires. His name and email are available on the docs. D.M.C is a very nice lady whom told me she walked by this FJ40 every day on her way to work, asked M.M. to sell it, he finally did, but D.M.C just drove it on rare occasion.  M.M. was a professor at the U of I, he fell in love with these from his days in South America, bought it for his wife whom became unable to drive, so this truck just sat unused for many years. Carfax are not available on pre-1981 vehicles, so this is the best we can go from.  No wear, no rust, everything tight, easy for me to tell this is an original 34k mile vehicle. I’ve owned hundreds of FJ40’s, only had 4-5 with these low original miles. Buying/restoring/selling FJ40’s is routine for me, but owning this one still has me smiling, it has been a pleasure to bring this special truck back to life.

MECHANICAL

In short, I went through this truck end to end mechanically. The motor is all original; I removed the head for inspection. The cylinder walls are perfect, no ridge, clean as a whistle, replaced head gasket with most all the other gaskets for good measure. We replaced all the emissions tubing. The valves are adjusted, compression is perfect. All the original equipment is intact, including emissions. We rebuilt the original carburetor, tested everything else and replaced with Toyota OE if necessary. I did not paint the motor or other engine compartment components with the exception of the air cleaner lid (had some surface rust). The clutch/4 speed trans/t-case are all original, operate perfectly. We re-did the brakes with Toyota OE wheel cylinders and rear drums. The front disc brakes just needed minor refurbish. This truck was the best one original mechanical wise I’ve owned. It really only needed minor tune-up items. The only aftermarket items I can think of are an installed K&N air filter (flow much better than stock) battery, BFG tires, oh wait…a chrome exhaust tip. The original AM radio works.

BODY

This truck was rust free, all original panels when I bought it. I used all the original glass including windshield.  I did re-upholster the front seats; there was minor cracking in the original driver seat. We painted the truck inside and out the correct Toyota 031 code. The floor is mint, painted, no liner. Many of the original steel components were media blasted, painted and re-installed.  All new Toyota emblems, wheel caps, etc.  Tires are new BFG Mud Terrain KM2’s size 31/10.5/15. The original floor mats have almost no wear; they are the best originals I’ve seen. The original jack and levers are restored and installed.  The original tool bag was missing, but I made a set better than Toyota did. It includes Toyota basic wrenches and tools with a vintage Toyota grease gun and other small items I’ve had in my secret parts box for years. Included the 12V lamp that hooks up inside the glove box. Original owner’s manual included.

I need to stress how important it is to buy an original body rust free FJ40.  90% available are a hodge podge of parts. FJ40's do not have shim adjustments like other vintage cars, they go together 1 way only. The doors open and shut perfectly, 1 finger close, the lines are just as it came factory on this truck. Also, with original sheet metal, you know there have been no wrecks or frame damage.  I drove this truck today in 5 degree weather at 65mph around 40 miles, there is nothing more I can do to make it run/drive any better.

There are only a handful of Cruisers like this still in existence. This is your chance to own the best of this legendary vehicle. This is an expensive truck, but I price all my Cruisers to sell, they usually sell within a few days of listing. This is a reserve auction, but I reserve to the right to end it at any time for any reason. Serious offers will be considered. Cruisers have been increasing in value on a monumental scale in the past few years; they are projected by the LA times and many others to keep going. I've sold them at the high end auctions at huge prices, but prefer to sell them on my own to save both of us the ridiculous auction fees. Most call it the most desired 4x4 on the planet. This unit is correct; it has all the right stuff. The miles at 34,356 today and will increase a little until delivery.

New eBay bidders with fewer than 10 FB need to email before bidding.  I require a $2000 non-refundable deposit via PayPal immediately after concluded auction. The remainder cash in person, bank to bank wire, or cashier’s check. Payment will be made to my business account only. (the tax man wants his piece) I have a clean clear WA state title in hand. I have a shipping broker whom I’ve shipped many high end vehicles with; I will put you in contact with him on lower 48 shipments.  I can take this truck to Seattle for shipment via Matson to Hawaii or to other countries. Options for Canada as well. Truck or title do not leave my possession until paid in full and cleared funds.

Toyota Camry re-earns CR 'Recommended' rating following crash tests

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

All is right again in the Toyota kingdom. The Japanese manufacturer's bread-and-butter sedan, the Camry, has been put back on Consumer Reports' "Recommended" vehicle list, following improved performance in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash testing.
You'll recall that the 2012 and 2013 Camry were infamously booted from the list due to "Poor" ratings in IIHS' notoriously tough small-overlap crash testing. Toyota vowed - just last week actually - to fix the ratings. As the Toyota brand's head, Bill Fay, said last week, "It's still a five-star car. It still does very well in all the IIHS tests. It did not in [the small overlap frontal crash test], and we're busy making the necessary adjustments so that we can address that."
Now, though, those redesigned cars have been tested, earning an "Acceptable" rating in the overlap testing. According to Consumer Reports, Camrys built from November 2013 on feature new internal structures that improve the car's crash test scores enough to make it a "Recommended" buy. IIHS has also elevated the car back to a position in its Top Safety Pick category, although it falls short of the new gold standard, the Top Safety Pick + rating.

US Congress lets $8,000 hydrogen vehicle tax credit expire

Mon, Dec 22 2014

When Toyota introduced the 2016 Mirai last month in preparation for a launch late next year, it said that the hydrogen car will have a $57,500 MSRP and that there will be a federal tax credit available worth up to $8,000. The problem, as we noted at the time, is that that federal credit was set to expire at the end of 2014. The technical language of the current rule says that someone who buys a fuel cell vehicle, "may claim a credit for the certified amount for a fuel cell vehicle if it is placed in service by the taxpayer after Dec. 31, 2005, and is purchased on or before Dec. 31, 2014." With the 113th Congress now finished up for the year and legislators headed home for the holidays, we know one thing for certain: the federal tax credit for hydrogen vehicles was not updated and will end as we're all singing Auld Lang Syne next week. All of this isn't to say that Mirai buyers won't be able to take $8,000 off the price of the car 12 months from now. For proof of that, we only need to look at other alternative fuel tax incentives and realize that this Congress simply isn't moving fast enough to deal with things that are expiring right now. One of the last things that the 113th Congress did in December was to take up the tax credits that expired at the end of 2013 and renew some of them. Jay Friedland, Plug In America's senior policy advisor, told AutoblogGreen that PIA and other likeminded organizations worked with Congress to extended the electronic vehicle charging station (technically: EVSE) tax credit that was part of the Alternative Refueling Tax Credit in IRS Section 30(C) through the end of 2014. "Individuals can deduct 30 percent of the cost of purchasing and installing an EVSE up to $1,000; businesses, 30 percent up to $30,000," he said. "This tax credit is applied to any system placed into service by 12/31/14 and is retroactive to the beginning of the year. So go out and buy your favorite EV driver an EVSE for the holidays," he said. An electric motorcycle credit was killed at the last minute as Congress was getting ready to leave, but H.R. 5771 did extend the Alternative Fuels Excise Tax Credits for liquefied hydrogen and other alternative fuels. These sorts of tax credit battles happen all year long. In July, Blumenthal introduced the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Infrastructure Act of 2014, which never got out of the Finance Committee. Back to the hydrogen vehicle situation.

Toyota Tacoma X-Runner dead

Tue, 06 Aug 2013

A report from last week indicated that Toyota will begin trimming models from its Tacoma lineup starting with the Regular Cab in 2015, but the popular pickup will lose its first variant even sooner than that. For 2014, the Tacoma X-Runner has been dropped, though the company's SR Package could fill the need of those looking for a sporty pickup.
The X-Runner has been around since 2005 with its lowered stance, aftermarket-look body kit and bright paint colors, all of which are offered available only on V6-powered, two-wheel-drive Access Cab Tacomas. The new SR Package sounds like it will offer a somewhat similar appearance, though, with a monotone exterior paint scheme in limited colors accented with smoked headlights, but it will only be offered on Pre-Runner and 4x4 models. Other changes being made to the 2014 Tacoma include a new wheel option with black finish, a wider variety of Entune multimedia features, and the option to have the backup camera display moved from the rearview mirror to the audio system head unit.
