I am the third owner (second owner had it for just over 35 years). This FJ40 spent all but a short time in the
very dry climate of west Texas and was primarily used for light ranch and hunting duties. I have owned a total of
14 FJ40s and 2 FJ45 pickups in the last 30 years and this stock '76 is amazing. It has 99% of the 'original-stuff''
still on it AND that stuff still functions! I currently have two other FJ40s and the facility-space requires this
one to be adopted. I have a passion for these vehicles and I'm certain that the new owner will love it.
I live 40 minutes northwest of Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and 90 minutes northwest of Hobby Airport
in Houston, TX. I welcome you to inspect and drive this vehicle and you will agree as to the quality of this FJ40.
My bet is that in another 40 years (2056), people will still be admiring this 80-year-old Land Cruiser as a true
classic!
Interior:
New front seats and jump seats in FJ40 stock-grey from the master craftsman at Cruiser Corps. (total of 8 pieces).
At the top of the seat backs (under the new marine-naugahyde upholstery), seats do have the shafts for the
headrests as they were optional that year. These can be found at SOR, Cruiser Corps or Cool Cruisers.
Driver & passenger floorboards and cargo bed are in great condition (see photos). The areas that appear white is
the very minor surface rust that I treated, but wanted to leave visible for the new owner to see just how great
this vehicle has been cared for (and thank God for Texas weather). The drivers side floor board even has the black
hardened glue that was used to adhere the rubber mat to the floor. Note; the red-colored, stock
soundproofing/weatherproofing textured material that is still intact on the drivers floorboard and the transmission
hump....still in great condition.
All knobs and switches are present and operate:
wipers slow & fast and the washer even works (plastic water reservoir is cracked, but functional).
choke, hazard, cigarette lighter (even us no-smokers appreciate it still works), fan low & high, fresh air, warm
air all function. Vent/heat/defrost knobs present and heater functions. Rear heater was disassembled, cleaned and
it has an easy-access, quick disconnect wire to turn it on & off. It works well and will certainly warm-your-cargo.
AM/FM radio has the original speaker in the glove box. Antennae is missing.
All gauges operate correctly and hold steady. (Nice that this FJ40 holds engine temp on the cool side).
Emergency brake holds the vehicle stationary.
Horn functions with two horn assemblies on the side of the radiator shroud.
Gauges, dash, heater and dome lights all function.
Previous owner had wired & switched (under steering wheel) for fog light, so I left that in place.
Sun visors and rear view mirror are moveable, but hold tight in place.
Glove box....you can eat out of there it is so clean!
Driver & passenger windows roll up and down properly.
Driver, passenger, ambulance doors and fuel door lock & unlock with TWO sets of keys.
Headliner is present and in good condition with no tears.
Jump seats fold down and stow up with straps.
Seat belts for both front and both jump seats present and function properly.
Rubber weather striping around all doors and windows are in good condition.
Roll cage is present and has the four padded pieces intact.
Exterior:
Turn signal/running, emergency, tail, head, brake, reverse, side marker and license lights are present and function
properly.
All emblems front, side and rear are present.
Hood latches and windshield latches function properly.
Side mirrors are tight and glass is solid.
Kick vents function properly and there is NO air conditioner on this vehicle.
Spare tire holder swings open and closes properly and holds stable.
No cracks or dings on any of the glass.
White top is in great condition with solid gutter rails.
Vehicle exterior was painted several years ago (the interior was not). While it is not quite the interior stock
Land Cruiser FJ40 Freeborn Red, it is a close match to it. The bright fire engine red gets a lot of attention! This
vehicle does have a few scratches on it from it's 40 year tour-of-duty. There is a scar on the right-rear panel and
a repair made on the left-rear panel to cover the hole left by a CB radio antennae. Didn't have cell phones back
then so ranchers communicated w/CBs.
Tires are Power King Super Traction 7.00x15LT. Nice military look! Fronts have 70% and backs 35% remaining tread.
OEM 'steelie'-wheels with new hubcaps.
The top, side panels, front and ambulance doors can be removed and windshield folded forward for a real convertible
that can go anywhere.
Engine, Transmission, Frame, etc..:
Stock 2F engine, runs very well. One pull of the choke and it starts right up!
Header installed years ago, with no increase in noise.
Warn locking hubs rotate smoothly.
Transfer shifts into H2, H4 and L4 as it should with mild resistance, as it should.
Four-speed & reverse shift smoothly through all gears.
Exhaust was painted w/500 degree engine paint and is in solid condition.
Clutch and brake pedals are strong. Vehicle accelerates and stops properly.
Steering is straight and easy on the road. There is NO power steering.
All heat shields, splash guards and skid plates are intact.

Audi, Toyota land on MIT's list of 50 Most Disruptive Companies

Sat, 23 Feb 2013

MIT Technology Review, a magazine all about innovation, has announced its list of the 50 most disruptive companies in 2013, and both Audi and Toyota made the cut. While the term "most disruptive" may carry a negative connotation in most uses (especially in the classroom), the acknowledgement in this case is an accolade, signifying that the company is at the forefront of its industry. In a nutshell, a disruptive company is a business whose innovations force other businesses to alter their strategic direction.
Audi made the list for "pushing autonomous cars closer to fruition with a laser-scanning road detector that fits in a vehicle's front grille," and Toyota for "expanding its dominance of the hybrid-car market with its new plug-in version of the Prius." Click on the image above to be taken to the original graphic at MIT Technology Review, where clickable colored squares reveal information about each of the 50 winners, compiled from a variety of industries.

2013 Toyota RAV4

Tue, 16 Apr 2013

A Nicer View Than Ever Of Middle Of The Road
When we had our first shot behind the wheel of the 2013 Toyota RAV4, the overall judgment from Managing Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski could be summed up in a sentence along the lines of, "Eh, not bad." The truth is that the compact crossover segment, now filled with not-so-compact offerings, is as cutthroat as any in the industry these days. When a heavyweight player like the RAV4 comes to market with a new generation, it is not at liberty to start from a clean sheet, lest it throw cold water on a vehicle that sells tens of thousands of units globally every month. Like De La Soul says, "Stakes is high."
If the choices in the marketplace were still largely limited to the Honda CR-V, as was the case when this market niche was green, the Toyota offering might actually seem like the exciting choice. But with new players offering better dynamic thrills (Mazda CX-5), cool turbo motors and fancy technology (Ford Escape), or even crunchy cred (Subaru Forester), the small crossover shopper is really spoiled for choice in 2013.

Bibendum 2014: Former EU President says Toyota could lose 100,000 euros per hydrogen FCV sedan

Thu, Nov 13 2014

Pat Cox does not work for Toyota and we don't think he has any secret inside information. Still, he's the former President of the European Parliament and the current high level coordinator for TransEuropean Network, so when he says Toyota is likely going to lose between 50,000 and 100,000 euros ($66,000 and $133,000) on each of the hydrogen-powered FCV sedans it will sell next year, it's worth noting. That was just one highlight of Cox's presentation at the 2014 Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Chengdu, China today, which addressed the main problem of using more H2 in transportation: cost. The EU has a tremendous incentive to find an alternative to fossil fuels, since Europe today is 94 percent dependent on oil for its transportation sector and 84 percent of that 94 percent dependency is imported oil. The tab for that costs the EU a billion euros a day, Cox said, on top of the environmental costs. To encourage a shift away from petroleum, European Directive 2014/94 requires each member state to develop national policy frameworks for the market development of alternative fuels and their infrastructure. For the member states that choose to fulfill 2014/94 by developing a hydrogen market – and to be clear, Cox said, it's not an EU diktat that they do so, since a number of other alternatives are also allowed – the aim is to have things in place by the end of 2025. The plans don't even have to be submitted until the end of 2016. The long lead time is due to a quirk in a hydrogen economy. In hydrogen infrastructure, "the first-mover cost is not the first-mover advantage, but the firstmover disadvantage." – Pat Cox In deploying a hydrogen infrastructure, Cox said, "the first-mover cost is not the first-mover advantage, but the first-mover disadvantage, and high risk." That's why the EU and member states will financially support the early stages, but everyone agrees that "if this is to work, it will have to be ultimately and essentially a commercially viable and commercially driven infrastructure roll-out." Since 1986, European Union research programs have spent 550 million euros on hydrogen-related and fuel-cell-related research, including methods of hydrogen storage and distribution as well as improved fuel cells vehicles, Cox said. Expensive problems remain to be solved. At a conference in Berlin, Germany this past summer, Cox said, the unit cost of the refueling stations was identified as the main problem.
