A 1969 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 Deluxe adjustable 4" air-bag suspension lift.  36" Super Swamper tires with deep tread.  Rocker sliders and rear quarter guards.  HUGE ground clearance (see pictures).

This is the real deal.  Purchased new by the previous owner he took his family camping all over the West.  Canada, Baja, skiing, fishing, this rig has been there and done it.  Eventually the kids went off to college and there it sat.  Unused.  Although the vehicle was well-maintained, the years were beginning to show in the usual places (mostly the rockers).

The original six cylinder fires right to life and runs exceptionally well.  No stumbling when cold.  Fire it up and drive away.  I would not consider replacing this motor with a V-8 or rebuilding it until you put another 100,000 miles on it.  It really purrs.  Tons of low-end torque.  The exhaust has been shortened so it has a very pleasant and sporty sound.  The engine compartment is completely stock down to the air cleaner wing nut, so you aren't starting with something that has been monkeyed with.  New starter, etc.  Runs Awesome.

The interior is pretty nice overall.  The Seats were re-upholstered by the previous owner.  They are very nice.  The dash is also very nice with the original radio and good knobs and switches.  The electric rear window works good although it is a little slow when it is real cold out.  The ceiling is ok but has a few tears that could use vinyl tape.  All the door panels are present but I took them off to redo them and put dynamat inside the doors (which I haven't got to yet).   The windows all roll up and down nicely.  This Cruiser has the toasty rear toe heater.  The original jack and factory tool kit are under the rear seat.  It's all there.  Bone Factory Stock except for the off-road mods.

The rockers were removed and replaced with 2x6 steel tubing for rock sliders.  The rear quarters are 2x4.  This gives about 4 inches extra rocker clearance and increases the strength of the body greatly.  These are not super heavy.  They are high-tensile steel which is thick enough to resist serious abuse without adding a lot of weight.  You can now jack the entire vehicle by any part of the rocker.  The rear quarters were brought up to just below the signature round lights out back.  Since those always take a beating I extended the tubes just a bit past the lights to form "bumperettes".  Now you can back into the garbage can (or a dumpster) without worrying about those cute little lights.  The tires are 36" x 12.5" x 15" Super Swampers TSL on aluminum wheels.  They have been on a couple of trails, but have almost full tread depth.  The fenders were trimmed and have fender flares.  The rear fenders were extensively massaged and modded to fit the 36" tires while allowing full flex without rubbing.  This whole project involved a SERIOUS amount of welding and many long nights kneeling on the concrete.  All the welds are MIG wire feed with inert gas shielding.   Anyone who knows about these rigs will tell you it is practically impossible to fit 36" tires without limiting flex.  This took a lot of special attention.  If you are interested I can go into details, but this is getting long so suffice to say you won't find another like it.

While there are a few spots that still need attention, the bulk of the hard work has been done.  This Cruiser is overall very solid and ready to run.  The brakes are there but take a pump.  I was planning on bleeding them before the auction ends.  It is normally kept in the garage, I just drove it out to take pictures.  The factory undercoating was in good shape on the frame and most of the underbody so I pressure washed everything really good and after a few days to dry in the shop preserved the undercarriage and new rock sliders with Toyota-Black Rust Stop paint.  There is no bondo in this rig.  I have pictures of the bare metal during the welding and fabrication.  The grey is to protect it from the elements.  A finish paint job would turn this into a top-quality show Cruiser.

The adjustable airbag suspension gives about 4" lift and an AWESOME ride.  Far superior to a spring lift, it literally feels like you are on a cloud.  It can be lowered and raised by adjusting the pressure in the bags.  All the air hardware is DOT airbrake line and all brass componets.  These are really nice bags.  Airlift Dominator.  They have very long travel from 3" to 12.5".  I have them set up so you could put on longer shackles if you want more suspension flex and droop.  The suspension is all stock except for the airbags.

Well, that should cover most things.  Feel free to ask questions and look those pics over.

This vehicle is sold "as is" with no warranty.  Buyer is responsible for shipping.  Contact me following the auction.  I can store it here out of the rain for a while, within reason.  This vehicle has a clear title which will be transferred via registered mail following payment.

Thanks for looking and cheers to all the FJ55 fans out there.

Toyota still wants Tesla's battery help, still evaluating RAV4 EV program

Wed, May 28 2014

Tesla Motors said earlier this month that the agreement it has with Toyota to supply battery packs for the Toyota RAV4 EV SUV would be finished by the end of the year. The deal is done, but Toyota is now singing its best version of Baby, Please Don't Go. The Japanese automaker may look to extend the battery-pack agreement with California-based Tesla, Automotive News says, citing comments made by Osamu Nagata, who heads Toyota's manufacturing and engineering in North America. Nagata also complimented Tesla for its "clear business strategy." Toyota, which owns 2.5 percent of Tesla, started the RAV4 EV collaboration in 2012, in which Tesla was to make about 2,600 battery packs for the all-electric SUV. That agreement was estimated to be worth about $100 million. "We are also evaluating the RAV4 EV program and will have more to say at a later date" – Toyota "We have a good relationship with Tesla and will evaluate the feasibility of working together on future projects," Toyota said in a statement e-mailed to AutoblogGreen. "We are also evaluating the RAV4 EV program and will have more to say at a later date." And while Toyota hasn't quite met initial sales expectations – it sold about 1,600 of the RAV4 EVs through this spring – the company expects to reach 2,500 by the end of the year. And the partnership did generate about $15 million in revenue for Tesla, according to that company's first-quarter letter to shareholders. That said, Tesla is obviously focusing its battery-making efforts on its own models.

2015 Toyota Camry ushers in 'sweeping redesign' [w/poll]

Wed, 16 Apr 2014

With a dozen years atop the nation's best-selling car charts, you might think that there wouldn't be a lot of incentive for Toyota to rework its Camry, particularly so early in the life of the current model. But despite its unassailable sales totals, the midsize sedan has come in for substantial criticism for its milquetoast dynamics, piecemeal interiors and bland design.
As part of CEO Akio Toyoda's mantra to build more exciting cars, the 2015 Camry has arrived with a fresh new look and content that goes far beyond the Japanese automaker's typically slight mid-cycle redesigns. Featuring some 2,000 new parts, the 2015 Camry casts a 1.8-inch longer shadow and stretches across a widened track (0.4 inches). And it won't be just the widened track that should help deliver a more dynamic performance - Toyota is citing a stiffer chassis thanks to additional spot welds along with a rejiggered suspension, retuned electric power steering and a new two-stage brake booster for improved braking feel.
A new XSE trim promises the sportiest performance yet, including model-specific shock absorbers and springs, stiffer bushings, unique stability control programming and 18-inch wheels to go along with a unique front end treatment featuring mesh grille inserts and a revised fascia.

Toyota wants you to meet an 'obsessed' hydrogen fuel cell engineer

Thu, May 8 2014

Like a television-broadcasting company covering the Olympics, Toyota is looking to market its future in hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle production by taking the personal approach. In this case, the Japanese automaker is telling the backstory of Jackie Birdsall, an engineer at Toyota Technical Center who Toyota says is "obsessed" with fuel-cell technology. A Sacramento native, Birdsall is responsible for testing fuel-cell vehicles and making sure hydrogen stations fill the tanks of the cars in a "reasonable" timeframe. Long a gearhead, she attended Flint, MI's Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) and, among other places, worked for the California Fuel Cell Partnership before joining Toyota in 2012. Her first car was an '87 Camry. That's one personal side of Toyota's hydrogen push, and shows another way Toyota is introducing the world to this new powertrain (see also: winter performance). The nitty-gritty is made up of things like working with FirstElement Fuel Inc. on a hydrogen-refueling network in California. As for its fuel-cell sedan, which was displayed in FCV prototype form at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January and is due next year, Toyota said it expects the car to have a full-tank range of about 300 miles and a five-minute refueling time. That's if Ms. Birdsall has anything to say about it. Check out Toyota's press release about Birdsall below. Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution A healthy obsession leads Jackie Birdsall and TTC to the forefront of history The word she keeps using is "obsessed." Jackie Birdsall became "obsessed" with cars when she was a teenager. That made her "obsessed" with the history of auto icons like Henry Ford and Lee Iacocca. In 2003, she did an internship with Daimler-Chrysler, leading to an "obsession" with hydrogen fuel cell technology. And now, as an engineer at Toyota Technical Center, Birdsall is "obsessed" with bringing fuel cell technology to the masses. But perhaps you need to be obsessed when you're trying to change the world. After all, revolutions don't blossom from complacency. Leading an alternative fuel revolution is just what Birdsall and her partners on the Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle team are doing. Collectively, they're finding tangible ways to reduce fossil fuels in the automobile world and figuring out how hydrogen fuel cells can be useful and affordable. In 2015, that obsession will bear fruit when Toyota's FCV hits the markets in California, Japan and Europe.
