1975 Toyota Celica GT Notchback, It comes equipped with the original 5 speed manual transmission and newer Toyota 20r engine.

The chassis has 46,141 miles on it, but that may increase slightly as I do drive the car occasionally. The engine is not the original unit, but according to the previous owner it was installed with only 10,000 or so miles. I cannot, unfortunately verify that. The interior has been redone, again by the previous owner, in a white/beige leather combo that looks rather nice combined with the non-original metallic blue paint. The Celica is equipped with air conditioning, which has been recently filled and runs very cold.

As you can tell, it is not entirely original. Here is a list of modifications and upgrades that differentiate it from a vanilla Celica GT:

- Wheels from a 2nd Generation Celica Supra. The rubber still has a great deal of life left in it. No wear spots.

- An aftermarket stereo system, with a stealthed radio occupying the space where the original unit once was. It has two speakers under the dash, on passenger and driver sides (thankfully the door cards were not cut), two on the back package tray, a rather large subwoofer in the trunk, and a decent amplifier. It works well enough, and has an input for an mp3 player. Unfortunately the antennae is disconnected, so radio reception isn't the best.

- A rear window louver. This may be a matter of taste. I'm personally rather fond of the funky 70's charm, and it doesn't inhibit the rear view at all. Though it is a bit worn and the paint may be flaking off.

- JDM spec fender mirrors. One of the most unique features of the car, not original for the U.S. market. Again, just part of the charm. They work rather well, although adjustments may require two people.

- A front chin spoiler, body color. Made of fiberglass (?), and matching ducktail spoiler.

- Yellow high-beams and added fog lights, with interior switch.

- Full Flowmaster exhaust with Summit catalytic converter.

- K&N air filter to match with Aisan carburetor.

- A locking gas cap.

Most of these changes were made to suit the taste of the previous owner, except the K&N air filter, and the yellow high-beams. It may not be in everyone's taste (understatement), but keep in mind that any or all of these things could be changed.

Now for the bad. As with most vintage cars in driver condition, there are some issues. Luckily, they are almost all cosmetic.

- The most apparent issue will be the rust. Considering the reputation that this vintage of Japanese cars has for rusting, it is in surprisingly good shape. There is only one hole, and that is in the passenger's front wheel well. It is about 2 inches across, and certainly not structural. The otherwise lovely paint is marred by a number of bubbles, some in groups. None of them compromise the body shell, and are probably the result of pinhole rust covered by a less than perfect paint application. On the underside of the driver and passenger door sills, there are some small rust holes.

- The headers are rusted. There are no holes in them, but they don't look so good compared to the newer engine and exhaust. Consider replacing.

- There is a small chip in the windshield, passenger side. It hasn't gone all the way through the glass, nor has it splintered outward.

- There is a dent in the rear bumper.

- The rear spoiler has some paint issues on the trailing edge.

- The driver's seat belt is frayed, but functional.

- When the interior was redone, whoever did the work screwed up the leather on the driver's side b-pillar. It's not discolored, but a bit misshapen.

Here is a list of things that were repaired since purchase:

- A new alternator was installed, as the old unit died. Driving without headlights at night is an experience I hope to never have again.

- The tubing leading from the radiator to the engine had a leak. Subsequently replace all tubing.

- A new oil filter was installed.

As you can see, most of the work this car would need is cosmetic. It is entirely mechanically sound. The engine pulls hard through the gears (be prepared for the 5100 rpm redline), it shifts smoothly, and in fifth gear cruises nicely at 75 mph. Despite the relatively low 110 horsepower, its light weight and tall fifth gear give it a top speed of 105. It may be an old car, but it has the resources to be a comfortable and fun daily driver. Slow cars driven quickly are a blast.

Transportation must be arranged prior to purchase. I am willing to drive a few hours if need be, but I would rather it be picked up and delivered rather than drive cross-country. The price is negotiable, but I will walk away if I we cannot agree on a decent price.

I am available on most days, and will send more pictures on request.

Weekly Recap: BMW rolls out ambitious plug-in hybrid electric plan

Sat, Dec 6 2014

"We believe that for the United States, this is going to be very important." – Julian Arguelles Let there be no doubt, BMW is serious about electric vehicles. The German automaker said this week it will make plug-in hybrid versions of all of its core models, an aggressive move that demonstrates its commitment to electric propulsion systems. BMW did not specify which vehicles will get the plug-in systems or provide a timeline for when they will arrive. But the announcement is clearly more than blustering, and the company revealed a 3 Series plug-in prototype this week at an event in France. BMW said the 3 Series uses a version of its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (240 horsepower, 300 pound feet of torque) with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission in place of the torque converter. It has an all-electric range of 22 miles. A plug-in X5 with the same powertrain was also displayed alongside the 3 Series, though the X5 has been on the auto-show circuit for more than a year, including a recent stop in Los Angeles. Those two vehicles use "eDrive," and BMW's plans represent the first widespread transfer of its technology from development of the i3 and i8 models to more mainstream products. BMW said it's developing electric powertrains so they can be deployed rapidly across its range, and they are flexible enough to be used with fuel cells in future products. Enticingly, BMW is also working on a "Power eDrive" system, which debuted in a 5 Series GT concept at the event in France. This setup has two electric motors powered by a 20-kilowatt-hour battery pack, and when teamed with a four-cylinder turbo, pump out about 670 hp. Reinforcing BMW's commitment, the company will add more than 200 jobs at its factory in Dingolfing, Germany, to support electric-vehicle development. The moves come as BMW and other automakers diversify their portfolios while fuel economy and emissions regulations are getting tighter around the world. The United States has set a 54.5-mpg CAFE requirement for the 2025 model year. BMW said the electric vehicles were developed with an eye toward the US market, its government policies and its wide-ranging commuting styles. "We believe that for the United States, this is going to be very important," spokesman Julian Arguelles said. Ben Scott, a senior analyst in London with automotive research firm IHS, said BMW's moves are expensive – but necessary – to keep pace with the market.

Toyota Prius line may not reach 2013 sales target

Mon, 22 Apr 2013

2012 was a good year for the Toyota Prius line, the hybrid that started it all moving 236,659 units, being the best-selling model in California for the year and the Prius C (pictured) being deemed the most reliable car of 2012 by Consumer Reports. Then 2013 happened, and gas prices dropped more than expected, and people haven't been buying the little hybrids like they used to.
A report in Bloomberg says Toyota set 250,000 units as the Prius family's sales target for this year, but hits like the double-digit drop in year-on-year performance in February have helped lower 2013 sales by 8.4 percent compared to 2012, making the objective "a challenge" to reach. The declines in Prius sales come even as hybrid sales overall were up in the first couple of months this year, including sales of other Toyota and Lexus hybrids. Jim Lentz, Toyota's North American chief, said the Prius target would be adjusted if necessary.

Toyota moving US headquarters to Plano, Texas

Mon, 28 Apr 2014

It's official, Toyota is relocating its US operations to Plano, TX. And it won't be a symbolic 'all ranch and no cattle' gesture - the Japanese automaker, whose headquarters have been in California since 1957, has decided to base nearly all of its operations in the Lone Star State, including much of its engineering, finance and sales and marketing teams.
The move, which will see the establishment of a new headquarters campus in the Dallas suburb will not only affect employees at the company's current Torrance, CA Toyota Motor Sales USA campus, it will also touch the lives of thousands of employees at the company's other operations, including 1,000 workers at Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America in Erlanger, KY and some New York-based staff as well. The Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, MI is not facing relocation, however, and it actually stands to gain responsibilities as Toyota overhauls its US org chart. Toyota says that its reorganization will affect about 4,000 employees in total.
According to Automotive News, while Toyota is adopting an "'everyone is invited' stance for the relocation," some attrition is expected from employees who aren't interested in relocating southward from the Golden State. For its part, the automaker is reportedly making expenses-paid visits to Plano available to full-time staffers and spouses to help them make the relocation decision, as well as a lump-sump payment if they decide to go through with the move.
